I have a Toshiba 32 inch ws, with prologic and a sub, its a good telly, but with some minor problems with the geometry of the image (can be corrected with menus). Cost me £800 2 years ago.

I bought it from Comet (awful experience never again) and paid another £200 for a 5 year warranty, which, if I don't claim on, I can get back in full at the end of those 5 years.

I thought that was a pretty good deal, I think they count on you losing the certificate (which must be presented within 2 weeks of the deal expiring). I won't let that happen to me though!

I had a TV made by some dodgy company that nobody has ever heard of before and that lasted for 15+ years.

Picture was good but the rest of it was pretty crap.

Sony are over priced cos people think they are better than other makes. This is simply not true.

Well it's easy to say that Tosh will break down so get a sony, but who knows, perhaps it'll last for 20 years. 20 glorious progressive scan enriched years.

edit: I don't think sony are too overpriced. When shopping myself, all the 28" I looked at were the same price. Most had vaguely the same features, but the sony had the best picture quality.

If this is simply not true, why do oh so many people swear by Sony TV's then?

Its like saying Coke is better than Pepsi. Its not necessarily. Its just personal preference.

People like the Sony brand name and therefore buy it...yes it is good quality but so are the competition's products.

Hmm I don't think I'm a Sony fanboy...then I remember I've got a 10 year old Sony hi-fi with 5CD changer that is still the mutts nutts and a 10 year old fuckoff Sony TV that has never needed any work on it and the image is crystal.

Not a fanboy but a fan :) You can't really go wrong imo.

popicock! Everyone know Pepsi is the superior beverage, and it came out before Coke.

I've still got a portable TV in our dressing room that I got for crimbo when I was 11 (do the maths). It's a National, not seen the make since, it's B+W but I can't bring myself to chuck it :) It's in daily use and has never had a problem, I just cursed it didn't I ? :(

My parents have a 32" Sony Wega in the living room at home. It is the sexiest TV I have ever seen. The picture quality is absolutely top notch, the sound is pretty damn good (Sony TV's aren't usually recognised for this, but it seems they have pulled their fingers out their asses on this one.), and you can watch two channels at once.

Why on earth would you buy a TV made by anyone else? :/

I have a feeling this is the TV we've got. It si verily teh win.

Heh, same with my car cd changer. I need to buy some more cartridges for it so I can have a bunch and choose from them rather than have to whip out all the little trays. It's such a pain :|

Better marketing.

"Coke please mate."
"We've only got Pepsi?"
"Whatever"

Only prats like Bodhi actually give a fuck :D

...

actually i think the £300 odd quid price difference is PARTLY down to the sony having a digital freeview tuner... possibly dual freeview tuners....

yes progressive scan might be an issue, in a while this thing is more than likely gonna be hooked up to an Arcam DV88 dvd player (which does PAL progressive scan too, even though that standard hasn't been fully ratified yet)...

think either the panasonic or the philips also does progressive scan, but not the pal version :/

And for £300 you could buy another smaller TV.

Surely that is a contradiction in terms?

/me shrugs

pal progressive scan may well be a contradiction in terms... i'm not THAT into home cinema stuff as yet, currently more in the research phase.... but it's my understanding that progressive scan is something which was generally only done on things like plasma screens and other uber displays, and for some reason, peculiar to ntsc sources, hence wanting region 1 dvd's? but what i've read in a few hifi/vision magazines indicates there's some sort of new pal-progressive scan thing that has yet to be ratified... perhaps if you know something about the subject you can enlighten the rest of us? otherwise if you want to go on some flame warpath then i'll find some text to quote you tomorrow to clarify what i'm on about :p

whoa i really should break that into paragraphs shouldn't i? not gonna tho :p

Dunno about all that jazz, but I know what progressive scan *is*.

When the screen is refreshed, it does the odd rows of pixels followed by the even rows etc. Progressive scan updates the entire screen at once. The resulting image is fuller and more powerful.

I hear it's quite good.

contradiction in terms

ok that jogged my memory then and made me google...

PAL stands for phase alternate line

which would by why pal progressive scan is a contradiction in terms.

ok, possible that only region 1 dvd's supported progressive scan, and that there's some new standard appearing on the block to have progressive scan on region 2 dvd's? or some shit like that..

god this cold is wasting me. i'm talking arse
