I'll give SWG a whirl. Although the thought of lots of mini 1337ers running around does make my blood run cold, the levelling system sounds fun and compatible with my utter inability to get good at any game.

DAoC was/is pretty, but all that there really was to it was a glorified hack n slash game. All advancements of character related to healing in battles or fighting in battles. All loot existed for was just selling to buy armour or weapons (or dye for your armour or weapons). In UO, everything you picked up pretty much had a purpose - you can shear a sheep, get wool, which you can spin it into cotton, then make cloth, from which you could make clothes or bandages. You see a tree, you could hack at it and get kindling to make a fire, or wood to make furniture or arrows. Your character could be a secret assassin, a closet baker, or herd cats as a past time.

SWG looks like it could have this depth, which to me seems fantastic. It'll either be the best MMORPG ever, or a humungous waste of bandwidth, but I'll give it a go regardless.

Yes I will play it as these games make my lack of a social life easier to abide.

Thing that worries me most is how the potential playerbase for MMORPG's is getting larger all the time. A few years ago you had to have heard of the game as they weren't that well publicised, needed a credit card and needed a stable internet connection. That excluded huge segments of people, and required those playing to have a certain level of commitment to keep playing the game. I believe this resulted in a good quality of player. Most were reliable and highly motivated due to the trouble of getting to play the game in the first place, and this became even more so true at the higher levels of the game.

But now with the mass rollout of broadband across the world, increased confidence in internet payment security and more ways to pay for these games, we will find casual gamers occupying a significantly larger portion of the playerbase than the diehard fanatics. This will mean people playing for just an hour or two will be far more common than those who sit down for 8 hour sessions. Now I haven't played SWG but MMORPG's in the past were built so that rewards exponentially increased when you spent more time playing. At the highest levels of a game doing things SHOULD require lots of people for long periods of time - it follows the natural progression of the game, just like end of level bosses in old console games would take much longer to kill.

Anyway the point I'm making is that with more casual players the hardcore RPG'ers will become more diluted and harder to find by guilds. No longer will you be able to start a pickup group and expect everyone to be around several hours later. Player association leaders may well find themselves fustrated by lack of commitment from the other members and it would take much more work to find a group of people willing to commit the hours to become the best.

That is my view anyhow :)

I've been waiting for SWG for years ever since I quit UO. Haven't played any other MMORPG since (except The Sims Online test).

Will be better when they put the stuff they cut out back in like the Vehicles and player towns.

The idea of taking off from your nearest space port in some ship and fly off into space and to other planets also sound brilliant at least it will when that addon is released. Eventually you will have other addons like the pod racing all in the game...

I followed the progress of SWG for quite a while, have let it slip recently so not 100% up on what they have added etc. Last I knew they was going to ensure that Jedi's were balanced in the game, and progress up the tree to become a Jedi was not going to be disclosed and also would be different for everyone. So the Jedi route would be very limited, hard to come by but ultimately worthwhile.

You would also have to have experience in certain areas as to finally become a Jedi you would have to build your own saber, and so would need Xp in certain disciplines to do this.

I must admit, as long as the reveiws are good, then I will certainly be giving SWG a try. I have tried EQ in the past and found it very hard to get into. I have never really understood MMORPG's and I suppose the intial starting out is always the hardest. Fantasy settings don't really turn me on, I don't get all the elf, dwarf, wizard stuff. However Star Wars is something I can relate too and hope it will offer alot of fun.

Last I heard you could also still travel between planets by going to a starport and catching a transporter, however there are plans to bring out a space expansion where you can become a pilot and have your own ship to fly and dogfight etc. If this works well we could well have an ELITE type game with real people pirating and drug running, with the empire chasing you down etc.

I must say though the number 1 attraction has got to be the chance to be a real Bounty Hunter and relive my child hood dreams :D

Since this topic has been posted, I've been thinking about it and I'd probably give it a try. I tried EQ a couple of times, but couldn't really get into it. I enjoyed it, but like Johnny Bravo I'm not really into the fantasy stuff, but I was (still am, I guess) a huge Star Wars fan, and will probably give SWG a go as a result.

SWG looks ok but Dragon Empires looks better, having said that all these types of games are the same, I got bored with everquest after a month as it was the same old thing over and over again.

I think I lasted 20 minutes on DAoC, then the game tried to make me form a party...I kinda lost any urge to keep going right there and then.

I've been planning on getting it for ages, but have now decided that I won't. Put simply, it'll end up being a total waste of time and money (even if it's the greatest mmorpg ever, which I doubt it will be), and I'll wake up one day a year or so henceforth and think "why the fuck did I play that". So I'll just not bother.

SWG has fallen way short of what it could have been but its still a step closer to a mmorpg having a real community without the need to go out and kill stuff in order to get anywhere.

The fact is with every mmorpg the games eventually get dull but its the community that keeps you there - the game becomes incidental...

Oh and give it 6 months and I guarantee youll see a bunch of Jedi :)

I'm gonna give it a try but wish they would open European servers sooner - the general level of maturity from players in Europe is so much higher...

The US release is available for pre-order now, on course for shipping on April 15th but some delays are to be expected. That's 4 days after Freelancer will become available in UK stores.. great timing.

If you get the US version you'll be forced to play on the servers located over in yankland so pings won't be on your side. But the alternative is to wait until September 5th (!!!!!!!) for the European release.

I don't think it's worth waiting. Not only will you be getting into a game with relative veterans that have practiced on the US release, but you could find many people will not speak English. And to be honest, the European gaming community isn't the best.

I do think this will be the biggest game release this year so I'll be pre-ordering from Canada some time soon.

Oh also, keep an eye out for an unofficial UK server. There's bound to be one, and it'd be nice to know that a lot of others will be playing during sociable hours :)

The Eclipse server is the un-official European server so a good choice for time zone compatability.

Not sure if I'll play there or the Roleplay server.

The developers have also said that Europeans can transfer their characters when the Euro servers open up in September(ish).

Should be fun :)

i was quite interested in SWG for a while but now i wont bother as i doubt the gf will allow me to spend every waking hour playing it and these type of games require dedication to get anywhere in them

prob good decision kan.

Gf + RL > MMORPG.

If some pre-pubescent fuckwit ever taunts me in a MMORPG with "me s1 ub3r muhahahah j00 4r3 50 levels bel0w m3" or something I'll sleep well at night knowing that I WON'T BE ON MY OWN FOR THE REST OF MY FUCKING LIFE AND DIE IN A POOL OF VOMIT AT MY PC SURROUNDED BY BEER CANS AND PIZZA BOXES.

cough.
