At the time I was lying down, shooting across the airfield and giggling at my team crashing planes into trees and stuff.

Is this the same sniper rifle that when having its barrel poked directly into the oppositions ear and pull the trigger and they lose 20% of their life :(

Thats the one PR, in fact i'm sure its there one where you really SHOULD knock off 33% of their life just by jabbing them voilently in the head with it.

Anyway, Subs are on fully now. Servers *are* empty, but this is the first day.

This is the Adam and Eve (or Adam and Steve if you are that way inclined, or perhaps Helen and Eve) of Barrysworld.

It unfortunately doesn't mean we must all start shagging furiously to knock out as many more subscribers as possible, however as was said previously, the future starts now, and depends on the first bunch of subscribers. I signed up about 3 seconds after it was announced last week, without word of hesitation. More than anything to say Cheers and Well Done for the last few years of solid gaming (I started playing on BW and I'll finish playing on BW, but not in the near future.). However, I would like to see BW see this though, and prove everyone who wants to flame the idea wrong. And I'm damned sure anyone with half an ounce of gratitude and respect in them for what this small group of volunteers started out to do, not for their own ends, to help us, to entertain us.

You pay more than a months Sub money to go and see a film at the flicks which is probably shit anyway.
2 Hours of stuff which you can't watch again without falling asleep.
Same money gets you up to 744 hours of endless fun (You'd have to be mighty sad to do this but each to their own :) )

Good luck BW, I'll be supporting you, and abusing llamas for you, all the way.

i've only been playing on BW for 7 months. Actually, when I come to think about it I have only been a hardcore mp gamer for 7 months (since I got my shiny cable modem).

I signed up without hesitation as soon as I heard about p2p.

And get this...I really only play CS seriously (stands ready with big stick to ward off the usual flaming). I put up with insults nearly every day and the occasional accusation (not so much now that I know a lot of the regulars)

So consider how much it used to cost to play online and consider £1 a month (with Game Card) + reasonably low cost broadband/56k connection.

I'm not paying for to say thankyou i'm paying for the next few years of decent gaming.

Its a damn sight better than the arse kicking I used to get from the old dear when she got the phone bill :)

I for one will be paying the full £24 for the service, and would consider it money well spent if I'm the only person who ever plays there.

As soon as I get paid on Friday, anyway.
Just gonna have to wait until then!

I've been on BW for about 6-7 years, I think.
I'm looking forward to getting rid of all the whingers and cheats, and getting down to some proper, friendly gaming with like minded people who just want to enjoy themselves, without feeling the need to piss people off all the time.

If only I could afford the subscription NOW!
Still, gives me chance to get something else done for a change!

I've had a free barrysworld account and email pretty much since they started the membership thingy, and I've been playing on barrysworld server for 4 years, since about 1998, and I can say one thing.... even with my wubbly student loan, I'm never gonna pay for gaming, which means I'm going elsewhere.

Does someone want to ring the ELSPA hotline to report this game pirate?

Being the enternal lamer I am, I discovered the easy camping spot last night by going to the South Coastal Gun with the Scout and picking off the dorks waiting for planes on the Carrier, additional kills from those driving Landing Craft towards you too, until someone spoilt my fun by starting up the Carrier, and then it _is_ impossible to hit anything _moving_.

Its still early days and we WILL be pushing our online gamng service to a wider audience to build numbers back up again and beyond.
Yes, many of our servers will be empty now.
Running BarrysWorld over the years has consumed millions of £'s. Why people expect to get millions of £'s spent on a service they use and not be charged for it is an unreasonable expectation. Advertising pays for nothing. Its a waste of time and space and we now dont have external commercial advertisers on our sites. Even with the multi millions of hits we get, it isnt enough to pay for someone to manage the billing structure, let along anything else. If you think that advertising is a viable business model in this industry then you dont understand the costs involved. It really is as simple as that.

A subscription model such as ours will bring many benefits over time. The first is the obvious commercial viability of the service. We'll actually be able to afford investing in it. New hardware and other services. New staff to help maintain the second obvious benefit; A higher quality of service. Not just better pings and servers, but more accountability as people have far less anonymity. And what about the games we havent supported before as we didnt have the time/money/hardware to do so?
Money coming in will directly address that.
We'll also be able to build a better and closer community this way. It really will filter out the morons and undesirables. Not completely, I'm still here for instance, but it'll be a better community in the long run.

We used to pay our bills (years ago) through adverstising and 0845 call minutes. Both revenue streams are almost entirely dead now and certainly could not even dent our bills each month.

Yes, I believe some of our rivals will stay free for some time and many of our users will migrate to them. How they fund the bandwidth and hardware costs, and their staff is their own concern. I would like to say now that I support Jolt and everything its done for online gaming over the years. They've worked damned hard and done it very well and they have a small army of dedicated supporters that will stick up for them through thick and thin. And frankly they deserve that support.

We also have worked hard over the years and have to put up with bleaters all the time (as have the other GSP's). I'm eternally grateful to our own small army who defend us. I'm so glad we didnt let them down with the pricing of our subscription service. That might have been a betrayal, but its working out very well.

Over time BarrysWorld and online gaming here will become a real force to contend with as we'll be raising the quality for all, improving services and, most of, making it sustainable. If thats not worth 25p a week to you, then theres nothing more to be said other than goodbye and thanks for visiting and I hope one day you'll reconsider.
To all those that have supported us by subscribing and defending us I'd like to thank you and assure you we'll do our best to build the service into something you can really be proud to be an early adopter of.

I have been using Barrysworld for the last two years (at least) for my online gaming, and as soon as I heard about the subscription charges I signed up, come on it's only £24 a year ( I didn't realise the game card meant the 'game' brand who recently took over EB, my bad tho) but still I do not be-grudge paying for a service I use regularly (at least once per day) I think it's great for value money.

If the roles were reversed I'm sure you would introduce such services to your servers.

I just hope the people who I used to play against in Half Life (and all the users who have used BW) see sense and register because it's peanuts at the end of the day.

GG Barrysworld keep up the great work, you've got my support.

New to the forums here, but not new to BW, been using their servers, taken part in various leagues etc for 3 years or more.

Ive paid my subs, was happy to do it, very reasonable price too.

The people whining about it make me sick.

Just a few points i wanted to make, especially regarding the EB/Game thing.

BW is part of EB, now known as Game in the UK (or something like that).

This is stating the obvious but Game sells.. games (and peripherals). It is current economical thinking that the online gaming market is set to explode over the next few years (some say by as much as %5000). The reasons given for this, are not just improvements in games. Mainly , it is the proliferation of online games, massively multiplayer or not, combined with the increased availability of broadband connections.

Basically thers gona be a huge market out there, as long as online gaming stays strong, and the community's that there currently are, remain to er... "welcome" the new members.

EB knows that in order for these games to thrive, and thus thier pockets to swell with cash, they need services like BW to flourish. Hence the buyout.

The free gaming services (the good ones) will die out or go p2p, this number of new users, combined with the big providers like BW going p2p, mean that the increased load on the free services, is likely to make them too awful to play (UK2) or too expensive too keep them at playable levels.

With high profile games like quake4, halo, UT2003 all due soon it wont be long before things really take off. Not to mention developing countries coming on board as well. BW going p2p is a necessity, and once again BW lead the field. Thier clan servers are certainly the best for me (my ping in CS is 15-25 on our clan server and im on nildram adsl).

Im pretty sure that either the subs will go up, or we wil start seeing some BW advertising included in Game brochures/mailings or in pacakging of games like ut2003 purchased from GAME stores. Either way, i cant see the cost getting too high, and even if BW only maintain thier current server perfromance level, i still view it as money well spent.

Good luck BW.

Good to see people still have their noses firmly wedged in BW managements' arse crack.

"Please great leaders, smite us with another 24 quid a year after we've already paid 30 quid for the game, nearly a grand on the PC and 40 quid a month on our connections".

Paying more money to get the most out of a game you've already coughed up for is laughable imo. It's why I will never play EQ/UO/DAOC/Insert other beardy RPG here, it's why I wont be singing up for anyone's P2P no matter what they offer, and its why I douby I'll be taking my PS2 online unless Sony somehow manage to make it free.

I doubt online gaming will ever really take off in the UK. The UK has always been particularly sceptical about online gaming (Hence the delays in bringing the PS2 network adapter over here, why Xbox Live! is launching at least 6 months later here than everywhere else and one of the reasons why DC died so spectacularly on it arse), and PC Games hardly have a huge market share compared to the consoles. So what we are left with is a niche market within a niche market. Hardly the best avenue to go after millions in revenue is it?

The reasons for those consoles looking so crap over here online is probably mainly due to the slow encroachment of broadband availability in the UK.

It's gonna be something like 2004 until 40% of the UK is covered by BTs ADSL for instance.

BTW Bods: Where do you think the money comes from for you to play games online, or have forums to post on?

That may factor into the reasons for delaying Xbox Live! (along with the fact that only two out of the 3 UK Xbox owners said they wanted it) as it is broadband only, but DC was narrowband and PS2 will do both, so broadband availibility is a bit of a moot point when it comes to consoles.

And I would assume the money for these forums and my online games would come from the same place it always has.

Which would be...?

And I honestly thought PS2 was bb only, like XBox.

DC didn't do too well because it was too soon for online console gaming imo. It should come into its own over the next few years.

So does that mean you will never own a tv as you have to cough up more money to get the most out of it like electricity and license.

So does that mean you will never own a car as you have to cough up more money to get the most out of it like petrol, mot, car tax, maintenenance.

So does that mean you will never own a house as you have to cough up more money to get the most out of it like bills, more tax, maintenenance, more bills etc.

Fair enough if you buy a game to play at home on your pc which you have to cough up more money on to get the most out of it.

Online gaming is bloody expensive and why are we not allowed to charge for the privilege? Who is gonna pay our wages, the bandwidth costs, the server costs, the colo costs?

You do NOT have to subscribe, if you don't you cannot use our services bit like all the services most phone companies offer on the basic packages they provide.

We offer a basic package just like them. Sorry but people like you will go thru life sponging things for free just cos.

If you don't like the direction BW has taken, move on, we are not forcing it upon you. You can vote with your feet :p

Ok,

let me explain.

Before BW got funding we managed to run from the goodwill of others. Simple. BusinessNet provided us with hosting and bandwidth for free as it showed how good their network was and could pull punters in (plus I knew the bods there).

Level3 bought BusinessNet and carried the "gentlemans agreement" over for a period of time.

As for kit, I worked my arse off to get it.

All the "staff" at the time were unpaid so there were no staff wages, they used their OWN phonelines so there were no staff access costs. The list goes on.
