I like Golfs, they will always get respect and they are good at what they do.

If I was smaller I would have what exor has though, alas I'm 6 foot 4:(

even tho its the same engine they dont drive the same at all, the 4 wheel drive sucks a lot of power out of the engine on the gt4. and driving a powerful mr2 in the wet just isnt funny :) but the gt4 loves the wet and the bends.

I have heard the MR2's are cows in the wet, and believe me the 4 wheel drive just makes it accelerate harder. I like a little unpredictability with my cars though, I hate abs and I would prefer 2 wheel drive..for some reason........I'm a cabbage I think.

Could almost smell the sea on your piccy.

Well I'm 5 11 and get in and out _easily_. Plus once you're inside they're very roomy in the leg department. I doubt 5 inches will make much difference tbh.

you need the best tyres money can buy and you need to respect the car in the wet. in the dry it handles amazingly well with good rubber. (and 0 to 60 in 5 secs) but in the wet roundabouts can be scary if you try powering out of them in the wet cause there is no warning the back just slips out.

i used to own a 3 litre sport capri so all this is nothing new to me :) first day i bought the car i paid £500 quid on good tyres Pirelli P Zero's all round. 215 at the front and 245 at the back helps make the car less tail happy

P Zero's are really not that hot. For the same money you could have had Yokohama Advans which are a far superior boot.

All this talk and money on things that you use less than your bed, that depreciate like crazy, and cost a fortune to run.

I have a nice car to get me from A to B, but there are more exciting things in life, plus people don't look at me thinking im a twat, cos I don't have a huge exhaust and big shiny crappy wheels.

Sorry, 'tis truth.

because the engine is in the rear the back tyres wear at a dreadful rate. yes the yokos are stickier but they would only last 3 to 4 thousand miles on the rear of a mr2. the p zeros last for 6 thousand which is why i went for them in the end

"Golfs are basically shit."

As Trem said I am looking for a Golf VR6.

Whilst I value all the arguments here, particularly Exor's well thought out and presented anti-Golf comments I can't really think of a credible alternative.

I need a five door car (child seat!) but it needs to be as small as possible (small garage, and little drive space). I also crave the performance of my long mourned Nissan 200SX.

On top of this I am aiming to spend around £5k and don't want to pay through the nose for insurance. I can insure the VR6 for £313 fully comp.

The Subaru Impreza may have been an option, but are £1.5-£2k dearer for similar age/miles as well as twice the price, at least, to insure, and having driven one it wasn't better enough than the VR6's.

I have tried 5 Golfs now, tho one was auto :( and doesn't really count.

The V6 engine is lovely, smooth and willing and pulls forever, the interior is dull usually black and is adequate only. The room in the back is good, sadly this is important to me.

The ones I have seen have been variable, but I can take my time and find a good one. If anyone can suggest a credible alternative, given my criteria, I'd like to hear it.

Oh and Embattle:

They're a old mans car now.

Sadly thats exactly what I am now :(

Calling someone a spastic is something most people grow out of by primary school.

bodhi, just because you have a Golf doesn't mean to say you necessarily need a hardon for all the models.

The R32 is bland in my opinion - it barely looks different from a GTi. 18" wheels.. wow, theres value for money for the £25k they cost. The Focus RS looks 100 times better than the next highest model (Zetec 180) - VW need to take a leaf out of Fords book there. Plus, the Focus RS doesn't weigh 15 tonnes, unlike the R32.

The only thing its got going for it is 4WD, but even that doesn't offset its porkyness.

(This is where you're going to tell me you can upgrade them to 900bhp by only spending another £20k on them isn't it)

The R32 is sex on wheels. In a recent evo group test (pretty much the bible as far as fast cars are concerned), the R32 came out ahead of the Focus RS (which is shit apparently - torque steer unheard of since the Saab Viggen steered itself into a hedge under power), new Impreza, 147 GTA, Leon Cupra and Audi S3. So I'm kinda inclined to agree with them.
