The air bubbles burst as they reach the surface, so that the air escapes, and the peanut sinks back to the bottom where it collects newly formed air bubbles which cause it to rise again.

There are so many wonderful science experiments you can carry out with objects close at hand at parties after you've had a bit too much to drink... Others include:

Fluffy Bunnies: Just how many flumps (marshmallows) can one person squeeze into their mouth and still be able to say 'fluffy bunnies'? :p

Balloon fun: Strap balloons together in various configurations, using streamers from party poppers, to see how they fly when released! (great fun in restaurants, where you can also start balloon wars against the rowdy bunch on the table at the far end of the restaurant ;) )

Donald Duck: More balloon fun - who can do the best Donald Duck impersonation after sucking a lungful of Helium out of the balloons strapped to the back of their chair?

Have fun!
