Ahh yes, but there are different levels of beeing correct and words can be interpretered differently. Ie. a truly dark sky would have no shiny stars (or anything) at all.

Well, considering we're not at the heat-death of the universe phase yet, we'll leave that to the realms of the imagination.

I'm guessing ignoring obvious context is the new way of winning the internets too :)

Heh - no - when we talk about a Dark Sky we mean the relative lack of light pollution. Its measured by judging the lowest magnitude star that can be observed by the naked eye in the area. In central london you can basically see maybe a half dozen 'stars' (some actually planets) - just the very brightest.

In the suburbs you can see down to around magnitude 4 stars - further out down to magnitude 5 and in a really dark area of the UK like Lands End or parts of Scotland you can get down to magnitude 6 - near the limits of the un-assisted human eye.

It's easy to correct toht so I don't bother most of the time :)

Anyway. Does nobody count a winking smiley as tongue-in-cheek post any more?

The stupidest bird on the planet is your mum.

There are spots in Britain you can do some fine stargazing and unless you have the VLT in your backyard you'll do fine. Dragging your €10.000 telescope all the way to the Shahara desert to find out it's clouded by a dust storm isnt really an option.

Theres no cloud in the desert though :) I have a lot of respect for those who soldier on in the cloud and the damp and light pollution of the UK to pursue their interest in Astronomy - its just a shame its one of the worst countries in the world for the hobby.

What I do like about this map is the blobs off the coast in the north sea - these are individual oil rigs which have been picked up by the sattelite :)

Last couple of years I've been down the South West, just under the two yellow dots near the North coast under Wales. Even there, where it's about as black as you can get it you can get a good look but you still miss A LOT. On the clearest night you could see all the stars and very, very vaguely see the rough outline of the milky way. For someone from London it was utterly brilliant but at the same time I knew it was still seriously impeded. Would love to have completely unimpeded views but you need to be in the middle of nowhere in Wales or Scotland up a mountain to get them. When I see astrophotography from places in America and South America it makes me hurt so much inside. Fucking Chile is sooooooooooooo good for skywatching.

You're going to have to explain how fucking a country is going to help with skywatching...

You'd need a huge dick to f*ck an entire country, so you'd have to be pretty big too, which would result you in being higher and getting a clearer view.

Near my (old) hometown in the Netherlands I hade a party at a farm (30minutes of cycling outside of the town) and I could clearly see the outline of the milky way (and a lot more). The longer we stayed outside the more you'd see to a poiint where it actually got a bit overwelming. I went outside to pee btw >.<

Don't forget that not all clear nights are the same. Humidity, high clouds, temperature, etc all have an effect on the visibilty.

I'm only an hours drive from some of the best dark sky locations.

When you get there, it's truly amazing to get out the car and witness how bright the sky is with stars. The milky way is obvious.
