Gents,

Some of you have organised a stag do.

What is the general etiquette around payment? I've decided that the stag do be split into two events; the four closest mates (including groom) are going for a luxury golf day and then a casino night for general attendance the following day.

The golf is quite expensive, around £150 a head for 18 holes. Is it expected that we pay for the groom? From what I can see on the web, generally it's expected that the groom is expected to contribute more to the stag do particularly for those that maybe can't afford it (I'm thinking students, or those on a lower income). However that seems a little off, we're all earning and I think we should all pay the same (including the groom) - I don't see why we'd arrange his stag do and then say "right, give us the cash".

What do you think?

I've always thought the groom pays f*ck all, new news to me, but then again i haven't really studied stag do's :D

It would be a nice gesture/gift to pay for it and let the groom save up for his miserable life with the old hagraven.

I didn't pay for my Stag do.

I know some of my friends were on tight budgets at the time. Everybody paid for the cost of the things we did but those with more disposable income paid the vast majority of the additional expenses on the day (eg, drinks, food, taxis etc).

If this is the 4 closest friends of the groom surely you can discuss money without that much embarrassment? If £150 is going to be an issue maybe you should consider doing something less expensive. The stag do is about being with your mates.

It's about all of you pissing in a cup and making him drink it, no?

All the stag night I have been to a whip round has taken care of the groom. I have been paint balling, clay pigeon shooting and a weekend to Amsterdam. There is obviously a ceiling on that based n what you and your mates can afford and if he is suggesting the events. If he wants to go play £150 golf and that is a real amount of money to some of you then I think its fair he pays that and you get his drinks.

Oh definitely, we'll get all his beer and food.

Generally the groom doesn't pay for anything, that's the way I have always done it. Might be different in tight arse skirtland though :)

If the golf thing is his idea I'd get him to spunk up his share. Everything after that is a whip-round tho.

Same as if you're going abroad. Flights and accomodation all pay individually, beer and strippers from the kitty, which the groom doesn't pay for.

Like the vid - if it was just down the pub for a night out funding the groom isn't an issue. If it starts getting expensive then it's only fair to for him to pay a bit.

Whatever feels comfortable tbfh. Enjoy it :)

The only time I've known the groom to contribute is when we've gone abroad, and in those cases I think it was a mix of paying himself and the Best Man/Ushers stumping up for him (I never really enquired). In the UK, I've never seen the groom pay for anything; I certainly didn't on my Stag night (paintballing/pissup/trip "home" up North).

After some mulling and chewing, we've decided to play a different course that does a better offer and we'll cover his green fees.

My thinking as well. Not everyone has money to burn, paying for his green fees, booze and food is ample (if still doing that).

Yeah but only on the proviso that it was a "better deal" it was a joke.

What is it with people today? Blob week?

Well yeah, it's a much better course and the price includes a two course dinner. It's still expensive but it's a better all round package.

We're splitting it up over a weekend; relaxed gentleman's game of golf at one of Scotland's best links courses, dinner included. Then the following night it's dinner, drinks and muchos gambling in the city with a bigger party of people. All he has to do is show up :).

it was a joke.

Oh I see, on that note:

"AHAHAHAH"

Nice one, you in Edinburgh or Glasgow? (Never been to Edinburgh but spent months in Glasgow and loved the city and people that lived there)

Most likely Glasgow.
Fond memories there. Best night ever was Cafe Cini and walking in, oblivious to the males (just saw lots of tottie from the window). Ended up mouthing to the Scottish Claymores. In the end they got me pissed :) Awesome night.

I always have a brilliant night in Glasgow, one of the best and that's in comparison to the likes of Prague etc.

fwiw, I have only seen women panicking at organizing hen nights, not having been a part of organizing a stag do (thank fsm), but fwiw EVERYONE bitches about the money and NOBODY likes what gets chosen. they're hella expensive and people just work themselves in to a lather trying to get something cool in.

imo, -imo- it's really not worth it. go for a fantabulous meal with your mates. get some nice wine in with decent choices, then go out and hit a nice club. finish up at a mate's house. sack out on the ground, watch a silly movie. wake up, have a fryup or morning barbeque if it's summer and basically chill the hell out. will prolly cost about half that the normal idiocy would cost, and you'll all be (imo) closer mates for it.

stag do's. bah humbug!

I've been on some awesome stag do's and never really bitched about the chosen activities (or costs) on any of them (if I really didn't like them or couldn't afford it I wouldn't go). Having said that, with a couple of exceptions*, it hasn't been the expensive trips abroad that have been the most entertaining.

(*massively stoned in Amsterdam and getting thrown out of the sex museum and the groom breaking his leg falling off a table in Brussels would be those exceptions)

Stag dos are fun, the problem for me is I am having to help arrange this one. As the video above says, there's always pressure to be unique or original, but I don't understand why that's so important to people.

True that, you can't be unique and original, snowflakes don't exist :p

All you can do is have fun and the unique part comes from the group you're in.

i would just say
dont try to "score" it
find something good, that works, and do it, comparing it price/activity/duration-wise to anything else is meaningless

Where abouts in Glasgow you guys normally going to? Not going out much, but there such an amount of places to visit, even for a poor student. Keep the fuck out of Sauchiehallstreet though, the places turns zombie even before night time
