Spyware right? Umm, try Spybot Search & Destroy, or Ad-aware, also regcleaner. They are all free and usually purge you of any internet related evilness.

Id use spybot s&d and adaware, but also try them in safe-mode. A friend of mine has had a lot of trojan problems recently, and this combo in safe-mode seemed to do the trick.

Ad-aware se is very nice, good deep scan but can struggle if you scan within the affected account. As someone mentioned above, safemode is best if its first run and also, as i do, setting up a second account and use that to scan for infection is also a good idea and removes the need to reboot.

Also running Micro$ofts beta antispyware program. You have to do some OS validation to download it, But it seems to be doing the job and performing well. (hard to tell how well, due to prior sw software doing a very good job to ) I am running M$'s as main scanner atm and testing once a week with Ad-Aware, M$ seems to be picking everything up and Ad-Aware coming back clean each scan.

Good timing this thread
Last night my daughters machine managed to pick up some spyware thingy which changed the DT background to some HTML thing and kept giving pop-ups etc.

I installed the beta1 of MS's spyware removal and ran a low level scan. The whole procedure, from start to re-boot (bearing in mind that this machine only has a 20gb HDD) to 4 1/2 hrs and found a total of 537 threats, most of which were duplicates.

The good news is that there are no more pop-ups etc, BUT....how the fek do I get rid of this HTML background crap. If I go into backround from control panel, its still showing Bagpuss as the chosen background. Right clicking the desktop dosnt bring up the usual dialogue box but another one which allows me to view source etc (just like a web page).

Any ideas anyone?

Am guessing that has to boot on start up .wilier. seeing as its not connected to your desktop properties. Install system Mechanic (trail version fine for this) and theres options to remove start up items. See if you can find it there.

Post some of the source code to if ya can't find it, Might give a hint as to what it is.

Also clean out TEMP folders, It may be living in there or have a copy of its self sitting there ready to reinstall its self if removed.

that must be a joke, their beta version of msn actually CONTAINS spyware/adware ffs. I still get random IE windows (I use firefox) popping up with stupid adverts for flash games and an offer to dl/run some .exe - like fuck.

My personal opinion is to use HiJackThis, which is a simple utility that identifies all the stuff using typical "hijack" methods on the PC. Most of what it lists is perfectly valid, so you have to manually go through the list and identify each one, however, anything removed by HiJackThis is definitely gone and wont suddenly reappear, like most anti-spyware "solutions".
