Not disputing its financial success - but it's just not a great film. It was watchable pap, not terribad, just not a great film. Even as a bond film - of which some are brilliant.

And btw:
It will not win any Oscars as it is not obscure or shit enough but it has done it's job.

What obscure like Titanic or Forrest Gump or Lord of the Rings, or any of the other massive crowd pleasers that win major honours? :p

You keep saying its not a great film, but you should say YOU dont think its a great film. The way you write it implies that it has officially been classed as watchable pap and isn't infact just your own opinion

What about the Hurt Locker? As inaccurate portrayal of an EOD as there could be but it had a Lady Director so give it an Oscar. There have been some classics films that have won. But there have been some utter crimes. Forest Gump beating The Shawshank Redemption which is on 90% of people top 5 films list when Forest Gump is not. Fuck the Oscars :D

It is not a massive hit with Critics or fans though. Not enough to be a classic. I think it is a solid film and it will make a shit ton but it is not an instant classic and in time Casino Royal will still be the best of the current Bond films for me. It is averaging 3 and a half stars and 77% on RT.

So from those stats the general view is its good but not great which is better than watchable pap. Just find it funny when people decide their own view is the official view :)

Who ever said it was the official view? You're being a bit of a fanboi over this tbh.

I think @ECA got it about right in his rankings of the Daniel Craig bond films. And I still stand by my view that this one is watchable pap. Skyfall was good. This wasn't.

It ticked classic James Bond boxes which I liked... I liked Skyfall for many reasons but none of them for following a classic formula. I will agree on one of @Scouse's criticisms which was the twist which was very obvious and could have been done a little better.

I liked it.

What I don't like is their insistence on keeping the bad guy hidden or a mystery for most the film (not for the first time), he was barely in it!

Its a Bond movie, of course its pap. If you are looking for a sensible plot then why the hell would you be watching Bond?

As a Bond movie its a damn good one. The opening sequence is just stunning (albeit with slightly more helicopter than it really needed)

Notice how it didn't take long to go from "here's a tiny little radio, we don't do stupid gadgets any more" to "have some smart blood".

Smart blood. Fuckoff.

These.

I was thinking about this today. Aren't all Bonds a bit shit? Some less shit than others? They were showing old bonds on ITV4 not that long ago and by Jesus the acting was woeful, fight scenes horrendous and special effects obviously dated. Every film has exactly the same formula, so how can they be anything but clichéd and predictable? For me, the main difference between 007 and Jason Bourne is that I don't want to be Jason Bourne, but I'd love to be James Bond.

In one's opinion, what's an example of a good Bond?

You only Live Twice, Goldfinger, Spy Who Loved Me, Goldeneye.

Interesting villain? Check
Sense of world-saving peril? Check
Really good car/plane/boat chase? Check
Bond girl not made entirely of balsa? Check

My problem with Spectre was it failed on at least three of these; The villain was both obvious, uninteresting and not really very villainous (and I think Chistoph Waltz is great in the Tarantino films, but paycheck-collecting in this). World-saving peril? Meh. Not exactly stolen nukes starting WWIII was it? Not to mention Spectre were probably no worse than the actual government users of the technology. Car chase? The Rome one was totally dull. The alpine one was a bit better, but I actually think most of the action scenes in the Craig films have been a bit shit; with the exception of the Parkour chase in Casino Royale. So you're left with the Bond girls, who were both good actresses woefully underused.

You don't necessarily look for originality in Bond movies, but I do expect it to do "Bond Stuff" well, and I just don't think Spectre delivered.

Goldfinger and Goldeneye were both great, I especially liked Goldeneye.

What about this: with the obsession with remakes, how about a modern remake of a classic Bond?

Watched The Man From U.N.C.L.E. last night. I'm usually ambivalent towards Guy Ritchie films. It had a better plot than bond and I think in the end I enjoyed it more.

Nah. Very different. But enjoyable nonetheless.

I actually thought MI:Rogue Nation was way better than Spectre.

Yeah. Give ya that too. Depressingly, as I thought it was only so-so. Gonna have to downgrade bond to shit.
