And the whole lot should sing very nicely indeed.

Of course, non of that gets anywhere near my PC, for that I have a much easier solution:

I have to say that I think the way forward for music is no longer just pure stereo.

I've got a DVD demo disc of Steely Dan in concert on superbit DTS and it absolutely rocks through my DD5.1/DTS setup.

The clarity and bass control just beats the hell out of even reference stereo stuff IMHO.

Remember we have DVD-A coming now as well.

heh stu is loaded ;) nice setup

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I think I will go the old 'stereo' route for now as me room is too small to take advantage of 5.1 or anything like that... then when I am rich and have me own house i'll buy a home cinema amp and qualiteh speakers innit :)

Now need to talk to Richer Sounds to give 'em me old system and get some cash off me new stuff!! Oooh wonder if I can rip 'em off :)

I'm still not convinced that 5.1 is the way forward for music - that's why I've stuck with stereo in the past. Sure, the odd disc might take advantage of it, but the vast majority won't, and regardless of whether they do you get all the unwanted crap that goes with having a 5.1 setup.

TUG - I SERIOUSLY advise you not to buy your new kit from Richer Sounds. All Richer Sounds do is pimp their own companies or those they have close ties with onto you, you'll never get a fair comparison because there are a lot of major brands (eg B&W) that they're not even allowed to sell. Try somewhere truly independent like Audio Excellence/Audio T, or SuperFi.

If they aren't cheap, I aren't interested :) Our local SuperFi is waaay more expensive than Richer Sounds and the stuff I will probably buy is plenty good enuff for me shite room really.

Plus, I'm a "skiv" so need cheapness ;)

like I said, its because Richer Sounds pimp their own brands. Tbh, they're the best place to go for "cheap" hi fi, but if you're spending 1K or more you shouldnt go anywhere near them.

Stu- is right, richer sounds sell cheap low end stuff. SuperFI sell top end stuff like B&W. Its like the difference between Poundstrecher and Harvey Nics, two different markets. However SuperFI are a fucking rip off IMO, esspecially the one in Leeds. I would not recomend either. My advise would be to find out what you want and buy direct (if you can) or look in the back of What HIFI magazine.

I don't think 5.1 is the way forward for music either. The point is that with a movie you are trying to portray a 'real world' situation where there could be say a car behind you and a helicopter in front of you. But with music it comes from one source in real life such as an instrument or a band grouped togther on a stage. Stereo because you are hearing it with two ears. When have you ever been to a gig where the drummer was behind you and the singer in front of you?

Sorry if i did not explain or spell that very well, I have had a couple this afternoon. :puke:

DVD audio sounds fucking amazing though, was at a show at earls court and had a demo room with it in.

You may think sound coming form behind u is fucked, but the quality was amazing.

shame u needed a seperate dvda player and the format had to comepete with cd's.

was doomed to failure from the start.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell I am only spendin about 300-320 on amp, cd, tuner, speakers so richer sounds will dooo.. I know what I'll end up with won't be the best but I'll make sure it aint gonna sound shite either.

Afterall, anything is better than a mini system right? ;)

Anyways, the stuff I will go listen to (Kenwood KAF3030, Mission 701's, Technics SLPG490) all get good user reviews and mag reviews alike... so for someone who aint an audiophile but likes good sound quality (i.e. me) then it should be alright... when I get me a house a coupla yrs down the line it won't matter anyways as I'll buy sumat menkal and posh :)

Cheers to all those who gave me input. Just need to sell me old system this week to help fund the new one.

5.1 is clearly not the way to go for Sound, it's an utter fucking waste, there are about 5 guys in the business who can actually use 2 channels to it's full effect, let alone 4

*has nightmares of bad engineers panning drums around the 3d sound space*

5.1 is amazing for movies and games. End of.

For music, off course not. I only use stereo for music anyhow.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell I was lookin @ KEF Cresta 2's but they're @ least 120 squid and, well, dont seem to get peeps sayin they're balls out fun speakers, they're more refined... which is nice but not for the majority of tunes I listen to.

Might have a listen to some none the less @ my daytrip to richer sounds. lol

Ok

question for some people who might know this..

I want use an optical line in from my sound card to the SA-DA8 5.1 system. Now obviosly it have the optical in line connections on the back, and u can just switch from digi to analog whenever. Now i just recently got a SB live player, and very nice it is too, amazing quality, and 5.1 sound in games and movies is just awesome, so much better than the old pci128

Anyway, it has a weird digital thingy, but it aint optical. Is there a daughter board i can get that has optical out and just plug that into the card, so i can get even clearer sound?

cheers. Any links to where i could get one of these would be great. Thanks

Electrical Digital (ie Coax) is widely acknowledged as giving superior sound to Optical Digital. So you won't get even clearer sound.
