I recently upgraded from a 5400rpm to a 7200rpm. Now my PC makes noise
Modern 5400 drives are silent, so if you want a relaxed computing experience, go for one of those.
However, I do have much shorter loading times now. I'm not sure what I would do given a choice. Let me go sit on the fence.

I have an IBM 40 gig, 5400, not much noise certainly and not problems.

I'm running a nice 40Gig Seagate 7200, quiet, but does have some noise, my old Maxtor 5400 was silent untill a "critical failure".

I must be weird or something then cos I prefer noisey harddrives. It means I can tell if the computer's actually doing something or not. It's often hard to check if the HGDD light is flashing cos I move the box around lots cos I like farting about with the inards. The drive I got at the mo is silent and it bugs me.

i couldn't tell you how much noise my 7200rpm deskstar makes as the "noise" from my HSF overpowers it

I just got me 2x Seagate 20Gb 7200rpm drives and they are silent when being written or read.

My 15k rpm Seagate SCSI drive on the other hand is a tad noisy and more than makes up
