Some people say its just a 'dog' when most families have dogs/cats as pets treat them as if it is part of the family and so they should too. I wouldn't call myself an animal lover but I do like animals and I know whats right and wrong and this is completely wrong.

Yes. And that´s exactly the point. It´s a general excuse for a universal desensitization. Regardless how cruel one particular creature is being treated, there´s always a worse case happening somewhere else in the world and therefor, we don´t need to feel bad about the present one.
Basically, you´re eliminating any feelings of compassion, empathy or even guilt on the prospect of a "greater evil". That´s not exactly the message I would like to deliver to my kids.

There´s quite some room between not giving a shit and being upset to the full extend of emotional range.

At any rate, I`m not trying to excuse one act of cruelty by pointing out that there are worse acts of cruelty, because on the long run, it means that you´re allowed to do anything you want as long as there are worse cases out there.
