A lot of people use phpBB. The RC2 version for the up and coming version 2 is getting a lot of people hot. They tend to use it at BW but it requires SQL which BW is only trialing at the moment. People used to use www.freesql.org but a recent anouncement will mean it's not possible any more, so you would have to find some sql hosting.

I find ikonboard is a lot more user friendly than phpBB.
Depends what your host has supported.
