Did she ruin Dr Who?

I couldn't bring myself to watch it. I saw a trailer where she yelled "DOCTAAAAAH" and then some crap about "Is you saying I look single" and couldn't decide whether to watch the programme, or stab myself in the eye with a sharpened turd, so instead I decided to do neither, and let one of you lot watch it for me and let me know what it was like.

Well?

She is a useless bint, totally unconvincing and always mugging the camera. Ruined it for me sadly, they should have gone with the Sally Sparrow character as his new companion instead. :(

I'm sorry I am with the extreme people. After the special in which she first appeared, I cannot bring myself to watch anything with that irritating bint in it.

Can we not start a petition to get her sacked? I really like the new Dr Who as well, but I will boycott it to save my sanity while she is there.

Am i Bovvered?

Well, yes, i'm pissing bothered you one trick pony. It wouldn't be a problem if she could actually act and not just do a montage of her most famous character abortions for the role. The woman obviously has been offering extensive gob jobs to BBC executives for years to get where she is.

Fair play to Bernard Cribbins though, why wasn't he the bloody assistant Russel T Gayvies

Too much running about in these new eps ;-)
Remember that this is a kid show too, so I don't mind as long as there are spookier eps every now and again.

If I remember right Bernard Cribbins was the Doctors assistant once, long ago before time began :)

Anyway, you lot really want to remember to take you ritalin tablets, refusing to watch a tv show because you dont agree with a character is bizzare, and really internet somehow, if that makes any sense.

It's not bizarre at all. I avoid a restuarant I quite like because the head waiter stinks. I have a friend I don't see very often anymore because I want to push her boyfriend down some stairs. Things that you enjoy tainted by soething you loathe cease to be enjoyable.

Yes, sadly I did have to meet him :(

By the same measure - I've seen her comedy. I've seen her in the christmas special, with the same character that is being ressurected (and I watched this despite the fact I've always viewed her comedy on the same humour level as cupping farts and throwing them at people). I've seen the trailers. I've seen clips.

If someone came in here and said "Actually, she wasn't that bad. She didn't shout unnecessarily at all, at no point did I want to have her forcibly sterilised, and she didn't ever use a voice that she has used to death on one of her oh so hysterical punch line characters" then I'd give it another go and watch the new series.

Nobody has done that though...

Because it wouldnt be true !

For me the low part was whenever she was on screen...

To be more serious tho - the assistant from the last series was fine - now we are at a period of many celeb assistants I cannot help but draw a paralell to the last few seasons of Dr Who before it got cancelled.

Its slightly counter intuitive but its actually the assistants (and how they are written) that define whether the show is good/bad - the Doctors character is already so defined there isnt much you can do with him and it takes a decent assistant to make him look less one dimensional.

I watched it and thought she was actually quite ok.
I'll admit that the special was in made me groan and wonder if it was going to turn into a Dr Who featuring Catherine Tate, it felt from the special very much like her am I bovvered charachter had just been transplanted into a Dr Who script.
I thought that this episode she moved away from that to something new, a Catherine Tate, will with the attitude, but I didn't find myself thinking every 30 seconds "oh god just quit now!"
While I think the charachter shes playing is obviously scripted as a bit dense/common there wasn't a huge amount of resemblance to her previous work in last nights episode.
Think back to peoples views on Billy playing Rose in the first of the new series, she was what? 21 if that? She had no previous acting credentials and her only claim to fame was a brief pop career. She came into the show playing quite a common girl living in a council flat. I'd say as she found her feet she turned into probably my favourite assistant yet. Give Tate a chance to find her feet in my book. Remember, if there are aweful "Am I bovvered" bits, thats as much due to the blinkered approach of the writers than Tate herself. Hopefully they'll develop a character in its own right, rather than just copy pasting across bits from the Catherine Tate show.

I thought that was a bit sad/pathetic really - I remember Billy Piper saying she cried when she watched Dr Who without her in it...

I thought the epsiode was good. Ms Tate wasn't irritating to me in any way. This may be down to the fact I've managed to avoid her comedy show, so it hasn't served to irritate as much as did you. :)

Just watched the first 'tate-ified' episode of the new Who. I, like many others was dreading it. She wasn't terrible, but she wasn't great either. Thing is, she can't act. She can do funny, and she can do excited, and she can do running. Thats about it. Anything even remotely more serious or straight and she struggles, which means the whole episode becomes a parody because she's unable to do straight scenes. God forbid they should try to do anything which requires her to be frightened, 'cos it'll be a joke.
And. I'm sorry to dig Rynnor, but Mr tennant is far from one dimensional....did you watch 'Family of Blood' from the last season? You surely cannot call him one dimensional after watching that.
Yay for Bernard Cribbens....he needs to be on telly more often, he's wonderful!
In conclusion Dam, in all depends on exactly how much you hate Catherine Tate....if the very presence of her winds you up, then avoid. If you just find her irritating, give it a go and she how you manage. To be fair, as others have said, this first episode is hardly riveting Tv anyway....

i liked it i thought it was very funny and i can see a good pairing here as long as the scripts are well written. the bit where they were talking through the glass and then the matron said am i interrupting made me laugh out loud was probably the best bit
i think its going to be a different dr who this time round shes going to be a true companion not a love interest and i think thats what the show needs to keep it from getting stale and ppl thinking oh god lets see how he screws this one up

also omg Rose at the end! cant wait to see the rest of the season promises to be a corker :worthy:

No I agree he does it pretty well but given that it is basically an all knowing alien who always wins it really needs decent companions to flesh out a series.

And incidentally I thought that had the worst ending of any episode since it re-started - incredibly lazy writing to throw in a Deus ex machina ending.

Edit - Sometimes the new Dr Who reminds me of McGuyver for some reason...

Watched it, not great
more interested in the Rose appearance
cos tbh I doubt that I'll like Tate's "Donna" and I really didn't like the Martha character either

I liked martha....

(hides from stones)

I think donna was a silly choice of companion, sally sparrow would have been far better but at least Catherine Tate managed to tone down her own stupidity.

Yes rose's appearance was interesting so early on, but there are rumours that the usual ending story arc is going to feature all three companions
