No I wouldnt.

Come on, the gauntlet is down. Prove that your CPU will run CSS twice as fast as my 4000+, hell, that it will run 33% as fast, and Ill go buy one.

It will and it will also not set fire to your house in doing it :D

Which is your CPU? Cos the extrema one is rediculously expensive?

Ahh, yours is the e6400 one I take it? Im a bit slow this morning :)

The 6400, which, at stock, is faster than an AMD 5000+ (not 4000+ like yours). Mine runs 50% faster than even that though and gets about the same benchmarks as the extreme one but for £150, on air-cooling.

Go on, admit it. Core2 == \o/

Lets not fall for the name bullshit though ay. :)
My 4000 is comparable in cache size and speed to , say , a 4600x2.
By your own chart your cpu is 1 and a half fps faster. Kick ass!
:p

at 1600x1200 4AA 8AF yes. If you run at that then you wouldn't expect your CPU to do anything meaningful would you :)

At 800x600 the Core2 extreme is 40% faster than the 4600+ which we both reckon is what we're really getting.

Reality probably lies somewhere in between 2% and 40% then.

Throd secretly likes the Core2 he told me so in IRC. He also admitted that AMD have always been the rainman of the CPU world, really good at counting dropped matches but shit at real life.

You run games at 800-600? Dont be daft. I run games at my monitors native resolution, which is 1280-1024. Which is far closer to the higher spec test.
Im not on a defend AMD trip here, I want whats right. My point is, on a standard clock, which is what most of us want, theres bugger all difference in real terms. If there was more difference, Id buy one!

ATi will keep making cards for Intel platforms until either the bus licence is pulled or a new licence for a future bus is refused, AMD aren't daft enough to cut off 70% of the desktop market by making thier GPU's AMD only so you can expect to see things continue as they are for a couple of years I would guess. By that point I fully expect for Intel to have a competitve GPU themselves, they have been hiring graphics people for a while now as noted on many sites like Ars-Technica but it is gonna take some time to develop a part that can challenge Nvidia or ATi. For the moment they are quite happy to let Nvidia take up the slack.

800 x 600 = 480,000
1,280 x 1024 = 1,310,720
1600 x 1200 = 1,920,000

Half way between 1,920,000 and 480,000 is 1,200,000.

About half-way.

But that's 1600x1200 at 4AA and 8AF. How much of those do you use ?

OK so shall we say 5fps then? Mate I need more than that!

I'd guess more depending on settings, gfx card and game. Point is, IF you had to buy a new system now, would you go AMD or Intel ? I think you'd have to be a bit of a fanboi to choose AMD at the moment :)

If the AMD was cheaper which it most likely would be I would get the AMD...

I feel I get the the overall best performance as well as value for money by buying an AMD.

As your website link shows the Intel was marginally quicker....but nowhere near quick enough for me to spend the extra cash...unless I was an Intel fanboi

That wasnt the question was it ? ;)

However, to answer it, if I was going for a completely new system, then yeah Conroe would prolly get my vote.

http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=605607

AMD 5000+ - £221

http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=605805

Core2 Duo 6400 - £155

The Intel performs better at stock speed and overclocks WAY better. Cheaper too just puts sugar on it.

isn't that DDR2 only? so you'd need a c2 cpu, a c2 mobo and ddr2, meaning that I'd have to buy two gigs all over again. I'm a bit more thrifty these days that I used to be you know.

Tbh I too would choose a c2 cpu were I to upgrade now, but I'll be upgrading (other than the 24" screen that I'm lusting after) sometime in 2008. The entirety of 2007 is saving up for Australia :)

Sure if you just wanted to upgrade an existing system. New pootah's (like mine) it's a bit of a no-brainer imo.

no wonder you wanted a fully new one :) methinks were I to casually find a thousand euros or so I'd be able to salvage the -case, -psu, -disks. The CPU, X24400, it's hyper48 cooler, the two gigs of ram, the A8N deluxe SLI mobo and the two 7800GT's would have to go. A coworker is lusting after it. He claims it's worthless and has offered me 200 eur for it :(

btw, Wij, if I slap together some stuffs:

le shoppe said:
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (S775, 2x2.4GHz, 4MB, 1066MHz FSB, Boxed) 298E
  • Asus P5W DH Deluxe, 975X (ATX, PCI-e, Sound, LAN, SATA II, RAID, 1394a) 198E
  • Asus GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB DDR3 (PCI-e, 2x DVI-I) EN7900GTX/2DHT 398E
  • 1GB x 2 (2GB) PC6400 DDR2 CL4 (Corsair, TWIN2X2048-6400C4PRO) 174E
les euros : 1068 :/

btw. just slapped it together so I don't know if it will work. I suppose I could possibly manage to get something like 400euros for my current CPU, mobo, dual gfx and ram. bah :/

personally I couldn't care less about the whole ATi/nVidia fanboi battles. I just want a card to work without fuss and let me play my games at max AA and max AF at the highest rez my monitor will go.

if someone convinced me that the ATi foocard is the way forwards there are good odds I'll get it, then again if someone else convinces me that the nVidia blah card is the one I'll get that one. just going to look at that hardware list now and see if I can get the price down...

Forwarded! pay day next Friday. I could save a lot if I left the Shuttle route and got a proper case.

I saw the word AIDS on the front page of the Daily Mirror today and I laughed. Am I a bad person?

Wij, is your mobo and graphics card crossfire compatible?
