But that's the misconception Bods (in my experience) - there aren't crowds of people outside smoking, just a few people coming and going all the time. Typically the outdoor smoking areas i've seen are not by the front entrance (this was Glasgow as well as my local).

Additionally, fair point about washing clothes; but it's more people like me that pop out for a fly pint in the evening: a fresh set of jeans, jacket and zippy top all stinky (jeans and jackets wearable for several days) and if i go to the pub at lunch time for some food, or after work for a drink; my dry clean only suit will stink until I get to the dry cleaners again.

Is it a big deal? Not really, i'm not often in the pub unless i'm going "out" out, but then again nipping out to the canopy with patio heaters for a quick fag isn't a big deal either ;)

I'm well known amongst friends that also don't smoke to walk up to some wanker whos smoking in a none smoking section and give him the mouthful of his/her life smokers are just ignorant as long as they get that fag they couldn't care if the world was ending.

if you did that to me i'd nut you.

i've got no problem with someone coming up to me and politely asking me to smoke elsewhere, especially if it's a non-smoking area and i haven't noticed, but if you do that then you're no less ignorant than the people you're moaning about.

ironically i've not had a ciggie since i heard about the smoking ban on the way home from footy last night.

talking to someone who spends a lot of time in dublin, he says the smoking ban is great as the patio areas outside pubs are the perfect place to chat up women. every cloud has a silver lining (unless you're me)

Good point Mank.

Had the UK had a decent climate (i live in scotland, my skin colour is blue), then this would have been much less of a problem.

Down south in the summer, i'd imagine that being forced outside in the evening would actually be preferential.

Then it'll be viewed that the non-smokers are being forced to stay inside ;).

agreed, once i can feel my fingers when i pop outside for a fag (oh no sexual innuendo) then i'll be quite happy to sit in the beer garden with a pint. there's some lovely pubs on the thames around here.

i'm just a bit narked at authority.

I think the majority of none smokers are loving the uproar of the smokers its actually quite funny watching smokers panic because they might not be able to have a fag.

Like other people have said smokers will either put up with it or quit its that simple and before you think ''fuck ya'll i'll light up where i want'' the police will be having yet another money maker handing out on the spot fines to people lighting up.

how's it going to stop us smoking? whatever happens we can still go outside and fill our lungs with shite to our heart's content.

on the contrary, you seem to be loving the drama, most of which you're creating in your head.

chilly - any recommendations for the forthcoming summer? i love the head of the river but it always takes me ages to find it cos i'm a spaz. only other pubs i know are in town.

lol - folley bridge isnt so hard to find :p

I was thinking more along the lines of the trout and the other pubs slightly out of oxford on the thames.

fishes is brilliant in the summer, but a) not on the thames and b) fairly pricey.

Ooh, Folly bridge - I used to live there. In the flats by the law courts. Loved Oxford.

One small point

Ive noticed over the years that smokers do a lot less work than non smokers.
Either because , in the old days , when I still smoked, we would spend time lighting up etc, but even more now when the poor sheep-like fuckers all trot outside to stand by the fire exit (oh the irony :) ) or where ever to have a fag, wasting ages every day.
So, basically smokers are lazy fuckers as well as smelling and causing undue stress on the national health service.
YOU USELESS *****!!!

Yes, I think anyone who moans about "PC gone mad!!!!!" type shennanigans with respect to muslims being allowed to pray should also include smokers going off for fag breaks every <insert interval here>.

(for the record, I don't think employers should have to allow muslims to pray every <insert other interval here>, and smokers taking too many breaks should have it docked from their pay or just get a kick up the arse).

I think the important point is that beer prices in supermarkets will probably go up as people stay in of a Friday.

I live in Boston, and there has been a smoking ban for years here. It reguarly gets down to -20c in the winter here. Last weeked there was 50cm of snow.

The smokers still go outside though for a ciggie. Its just how its done now. Albiet they do tend to be very quick having them now.

Plus, you can guarantee a lot of non-smokers will make calls to their police stations reporting anyone ignoring the law. Again, spot fines.. don't pay and you face court, followed by prosecution and resulting in further fines etc etc.

yeah because your average anti-smoker nazi loves to killjoy. :wanker:

For all you non-smokers that are saying that smokers will either just smoke outside or quit, I'd like to point out how hard quiting is.

You seem to forget that smoking is an addiction and, regardless of the reasons you started in the first place, breaking that addiction is incredibly fucking difficult.

Now, you may say, "Boo Fucking Hoo!! You started smoking so it's your own damn fault". Well, I'm not arguing with that but, speaking for myself, I think I could safely say that quiting smoking would have been very easy in the first year I started. It's just all of a sudden that craving creeps up on you earlier and earlier and before you know it you're justifying all the reasons to keep smoking just so you don't have to go through the pain of quiting.

If you don't already smoke, never start! If you do smoke and have no inclination to quit, carry on :)

quitting smoking is easy. I'd say it's waiting about for the addiction to wear off that is hard as hell. tough cookies. I'm not particularly 'ard or tenatious and I managed it, so so can generalised "you".

my mum, bless her, a smoker of 55(!) years, has managed it.

I hated my nicotine addiction most extremely. it was like a little voice in my head telling me it was ok to have one. that I'd feel better after. that it would taste good. etc. not constantly, that really would have been hell, but it would suddenly be there to harass me when I was waiting, or having a coffee etc. Imo the mechanism that facilitates addiction is the single-worst thing us humans have that we do to ourselves :/

I couldnt be arsed with reading the first 8 pages, but i agree with everyone who's prolly said something to the effect of its bullshit. Leaving no establishment able to cater for people who CHOOSE to go have a drink and smoke is utter arse. How anyone can moan about civil liberties and freedom of this and that and support a blanket ban is beyond me. Banning it from certain areas, workplaces, restaurants pubs in food areas etc fine, a pain but fine. If it was such a great thing, more local bars/pubs would have already enforced themselves as no-smoking and reaped all these supposed benefits from millions of people coming in to a smoke free place, but they dont because its not in their interest. So its now not a choice between going to a smokey pub or a less smokey one, its no choice.
While we're at it can we ban cars too as theyre pumping out a ton of toxic crap as i walk past them on the street, and i dont have a choice but to go past them, i did have the choice of not going in to a smokey pub.

Some years ago they banned smoking in public places over here in Norway. I was against it.
But I got to tell you, after a while I think most of you will agree that its accually better with
non-smoking pubs. However much you enjoy a ciggy+pint =)

Atleast thats what happened over here. Most smokers were happy with the new rules after a short period of time.
Just give it some time =)

10 years from now all the smokers will look back on this and wonder what all the fuss was about, just like when smoking was banned on public transport :).

10 years from now you wont be able to ask the smokers what they think because talking in pubs will be banned too, or breathing vaguely in someone elses direction.
