It's a good thing I don't have a clerks job, if I was behind that counter I would be forced by the little people to say way worse things :(

I used to deal with customers when i was on a IT Helpesk, then again when i worked in Networking (3 and a bit years in those fields). Now (thankfully) i'm in development and dont have to deal with the clients anymore.

The fact of the matter is that if you were to be abusive to a customer in industry (where you get paid a descent wage), and the client complained you would be fired before you got back to your office irrespective of how the client acted.

I have had a complaint filed, but the fact was we already knew that the customer was rude, disruptive and abusive.

Ok, IT. Let me just ask you; Have anyone ever wandered in and masturbated on your floor?

Anyone ever asked if you had a staff bathroom they could borrow, then flood half the store, by leaving the water running, ruining the floor?
Then refusing to even apollogise for forgetting to turn it off, and accusing you of doing it. Ever had anyone yell at you, about something you already said he would have to speak with the main office about, while some poor woman with a baby is trying to keep it from crying. But can't leave since she is in the line the man is holding up? :)
Anyone ever come in with an obviously broken piece on rented material for the third separate time, then abuse you when you won't comp the man for the thing he broke, and he wont leave when you calmly ask him to.

I'm sure you have had your share of difficult people. And so have i, without being rude. But if people are repeat offenders and wont listen to reason. I have no problem with getting rude.
Unproffesional, so be it :D

No BJ, you suck because you're not living in the golden days when customer is right no matter what they do, be it wank over you or shout profanities.

The customer isn't right, that's why YOU work at what YOU know best. Especially IT folk. They sometimes NEED to be put in their place and i for one am all for the "we have the right to choose the dickheads we serve" policy :)

Oh and i'll just add, for the rudenes of it, "All you who think that customers shouldn't be abused at times, bend over!" :D

Your fault for not kicking them out/calling the police

Anyone ever asked if you had a staff bathroom they could borrow, then flood half the store, by leaving the water running, ruining the floor?
Then refusing to even apollogise for forgetting to turn it off, and accusing you of doing it.
Again your fault for letting them use it (assumably) against company policy

Ever had anyone yell at you, about something you already said he would have to speak with the main office about

And you honestly believe being abusive is going to solve the situation, i am finding it hard to believe you have alot of customer service experience atm if the answer is yes

I'm sure you have had your share of difficult people. And so have i, without being rude. But if people are repeat offenders and wont listen to reason. I have no problem with getting rude.

I had a guy that would come in every other day for a week about the same problem and had to spend half an hr trying to convince him he was wrong, did i yell at him for doing it? no
Why? because was my job

I used to work in a resteraunt when i was younger, i can say to this day i have never had the need to be abusive to perform my job. Sorry but you are plain wrong if you think you do regardless of what area you work in.
I could come up with a list of things that would make you cringe but i dont see the point as it is pretty irrelevant

there a difference between being rude and/or abusive and putting someone in their place. it is most definitely not "the customer is always right", but there is no excuse for being a twat to them regardless of their behaviour

Funny, how after reading this situation. Half of the people here suddenly adopts the "holier than thou" Attitude ^^.

If you came in a couple of times a year, insisted on special treatment, held up a giant line because you didn't want to pay late fees and were generally rude while doing this. I'd do exactly the same to you, and trust me... i'd pray for you to take a swing at me :)

You cut the abusive man short. Keeping a woman with a baby, who is crying because of the shouting, waiting, when he already knows it's out of my hands. I could kick him out, or call the police. I choose to humiliate him. Think of it what you want :) I have never been fired from a job, or reprimanded for being rude :)

Who needs that kinda job anyway?

It's just stress and the payoff is what...some extra money to..err...buy more stuff! :D

I'm happy with a no career job, as long as it keeps me eating, living, drinking and having fun :)

I make plenty to pay my bills, eat, buy stuff, go out etc. and still have money to put away every month.
Extra cash wouldn't really change my lifestyle :)
I don't mind stress as long it's to do with something i enjoy. And thats not 1's and 0's, people or paperwork :p

Read it again ^^ i said; if he did that stuff i'd pray he would take a swing at me.
Not having a problem with a good fist fight between 2 willing parties, is not what i considder chavy as you put it.
the saying; Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. Is BS :)
I can sit down and discuss political matters, i can solve arguments without fists etc. But i can also fight if i feel like it :)
Chavy would be grapping 10 of your friends and hasseling random people on the street, threatening to beat up anyone who disagrees with you or going out for a night on the town with the purpose of getting in a fight.

I'm third line support for an IT company.

Been there nigh on four years. (four years in August)

Any further? Why, what do you intend on doing? :p

I can see reading further on the thread its developed enough with you and chron anyhow. So don't bother.

No use turning it into a further arguement.

On another note, with regards to stress, try working in IT :) You're surrounded by idiots and always have your hands tied by management who don't have a clue what you're talking about.

ah good ol bj always fun posts to read, work in the customer services area myself, have to say ive not yet been abusive towards a customer in 3years, but when your always going to get one customer who gets to you, and i personally dont belive anyone who says they have had that happen.

the last time i had a customer i wanted to hit was fun, but i didnt, he decided it was a good idea to swear at a member of staff cause there was nothing she could do to help, guy twice my size and he thought squaring up to me was gonna help, i just laughed and got security to escort him outta the building :)

I wouldn't work in IT, ever. mainly because i know nothing about computers :p, but also having tried to guide some clueless guy through, how to change the language on a DvD. I know I'd get overwhelmed by some peoples talent to hit every button but the right one ^^.

Take it any further, as in explain what experience i have dealing with costumer service.
I'm good with costumers, as long as they behave or respond to reason. Some people, obviously, considders me not bending over as the Seel so picturesquely put it. Unproffessional, and that is fine me. I don't intend on making a career in costumer service.
To me it seems like it's all black and white, to you guys. And if that works for you, more power to you.
I know when to be rude and when to explain, and that works for me :)
