£299 for the box and £10 a month, you can goto www.sky.com/hd and download some clips, looks pretty impressive tbh

the clips are in the More To Explore bit

That was last week brooky, and even that was only the confirmation of what had been known for months.

Even dupe threads are more interesting :p

HD programmes are massively more expensive to make than SD, so its only fair you have to pay.

Possibly, although there will be very little worth paying for at first. It's also a wee bit dodgy that to get HD you're not really paying an extra tenner, its actually an extra £20 (unless you subscribe to 2 premium channels) because you can only get HD with a Sky+ HD box. They've not exactly subsidised the hardware costs either (unlike Telewest).

They are also around 3 times the size of a regular dvd quality broadcast, so bandwidth will be hugely increased

They have subsidised the costs though. Most live footy matches on Sky have been in HD for over a year - they just haven't transmitted them.

The matches are subcontracted to outside broadcast facility companies, who have all recently upgraded their trucks and facilities to HD - thats a massive cost, millions per truck. These companies will be charging Sky a lot more for this, so its a bit of a gamble for Sky.

HD documentaries and the like are similarly more expensive. For a freelancer to upgrade his camera and lenses you're talking at least £50000, so their rates are going to rise accordingly.

All this before Sky even have subscribers.

Err, that's not a subsidy, it's called Capital Expenditure and its a cost of doing business. I was specifically talking about the set top box cost. Traditionally, stb's are subsidised to a greater or lesser extent to encourage take up. Sky are taking a different approach this time; because they probably assume the early adopters (who also have to afford a chunk of change for a new TV) won't mind shelling out to be first on the block. It won't last if they want to get decent take up.

Is that £200 for the HD "install" and £10 a month over and above your normal monthly subscription?

Personally I think it's a ripoff.

Any business has ongoing costs and that includes the cost of upgrading your equipment over time. Sky had to buy equipment when they started out which would have been just as expensive then as the new stuff is now.

I reckon they're just milking the early uptakers tbh...

Feck that.

New box - £300
Sky sub + HD Sub - £50 a month
New HD plasma - £1400

Realising you've spent a rediculous and laughable shitload of cash to watch a few channels in higher res with the novelty wearing off after two weeks just so you could say "i have HD!" - priceless.

Sky is shite anyway, bubble gum for the eyes.

Once you've seen a footy match in HD, you won't want to watch it in SD :)

Compared to the investment Sky made years ago (before they had any subscribers) its peanuts.

Catby has not seen a truer set of words in this forum for some time.

Catsby likens watching HD and then going back to standard definition to smearing your telly with vasoline (ask wij). Catsby has about a dozen or so HD channels, so they will come to the UK in the end.

I'd rather stick a sharp splintered stick up my arse tbh. :) Footy is crap, but that's another thread.

Don't see why we should pay for this. It's up to the producers to sell the programmes to the broadcasters, and for the broadcasters to make sure they get enough advertising/sponsorship revenue.

We only subscribe to the basic sky package, and thats only because Mrs Yuck wants to watch some of the drivel available. We've got god knows how many channels and actually only watch about 6 or 7.

Well now they're merging (merged?) with Telewest, it'll be the TV Drive system. Problem is it will be entirely dependent on how good/shit your particular bit of the NTL network is. In my area NTL broadband doesn't even work, never mind HD.

Merged. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a impending redundancy notification next week, all the signs are there.

Anyone got a job they can give me?

Nah, the signs are all there...the lack of recruiting, not even replacing leaving staff...the excess capacity caused by heavy recruiting at other centres...and the only job advertised locally is for a temporary HR contract.
