Should someone be 'blamed'

Apparently many are blaiming binge drinking on 'irresponsible drink pricing'. Effectively, this removes responsibility from the binge drinker and places it on the retailer. Is it fair to say that the retailer is to blame for people binge drinking, and that the individual is blameless?

It's a circle really isn't it. Retailers want people to buy alcohol, they know everyone likes it, so they drop the prices. People buy more and get hammered. The price stays low.

Personally, I dont see how anyone is to blame except the person who binges.

Unless I'm missing something, retailers are not forcing people at gun point to buy alcohol. It doesnt matter if a drink costs 50p or a fiver. If someone chooses to buy it, is it the shops fault?

It's the reponsibility of the drinker, fullstop. Laws are in place to prevent younger people drinking which should be correctly adhered to (Maybe moved to 21), other then that, you can't go around blaming someonelse for your own failures in life (not you personally, general sweeping comment).

You can't for example blame cutlery producers when a stabbing occurs... seriously flawed logic which is just inbuilt to our newly founded 'blame anyone but me' sue everyone society.

As far as I'm concerned, even if the alcohol is £1 for a litre of vodka; it's a business and the extent of their social responsibility should be to enforce the law and it ends there.

Indeed... there aren't many fat people in Ethiopia; size is part determined by your genetics sure, just like someone who can run fast partly has that ability because of their body make-up but that doesn't mean other people can't run at least at a decent rate...

Again, it's just the finger pointing society which should on a moral level, not be stood for.

I think its more to do with bad educating by parents at a younger age than the retailers. We all drank when we were 13 etc but its the way parents deal with it i think helps

I used to go to Ark/Life in manchester when i just turned 15 because I looked older but never drank!! Probably started at 16, was in 5th year for sure, but we hardly ever drank on the streets, we went to pubs. Had to save my dinner money up all week to be able to buy a few pints

Jesus! I have about 6 cans when getting ready! If I go out for a proper night out, I dont get much change from £100. Unless I drink wine cos that gets me pissed, but if I drink my fave drink, Jack Daniels, I just cant get drunk off it so spend a fortune

I drink, I therefore apportion blame to myself, do I feel guilty? No. Yea I am a fucking chav nah, but really this disparity between the prices in the pubs and supermarkets/off licenses really brings a smile to my face.

Pubs have standard costs ie minimum wage. Also many of the companies tell the pubs what to charge for their beer - (currently being contested in the high courts) via set pricing. In the old days, beer wasn't that much of an issue as the prices between off licenses and supermarkets weren't that much of a difference that it is today.

If supermarkets weren't selling their beer at a loss then this wouldn't be so much of an issue. I am for one am not crying about it, I enjoy my nights in and my nights out at the pub. But my difference is that when I do go to the pub, I want quality real ale that I can't buy in the off license and thus that limits where I will go to get it.

Pubs can keep crying about this issue to be honest, part of the way to go is where I said above, rest will either be down to legislation or economics.

It aint just super markets selling cheap booze.
There is a Lloyds near me (owned by whetherspooners) selling cask ales for 99p a pint.
That is actually cheaper than tesco who will sell 500ml of bottle conditioned ale at around £1.40 at the least.

Cant say I remember too clearly, but it is definatley not Greene King.

I had 3 pints the other Friday with a big breakfast.

They also had Abbot which is only like £1.20 so still cheaper than a shop.

(The breakfast is amazing by the way. 4 slices of fancy toast, 2 sausages, 2 eggs, 2 bacon, loads of beans, 4 hashbrowns, tomato, mushroom for about £3!)
