Servers are still empty 99% of time

Ever since the introduction of the subscription the servers have in all honestly been empty most of the time, ive not even been able to play ONCE since i subscribed even cs servers are emtpy, this new GAME.net thing just isnt working in my opinion and again noones playing, i bought bf1942, servers all empty, i just got ut2003, servers all emtpy, I do not begrudge bworld charging but the fact is the servers are always emtpy on the whole and im just so sick of it i honestly dont see the point in even putting them up, its just accepted now that there empty and changing name to GAME hasnt done nothing, neither has selling it in a box, nothing at all has changed, people keep saying "just wait" well we have been waiting for what seems like years, its just not happening and i cannot see it ever changing no matter what you do, the only way to have a popular server is for it to be free, i say scrap it now, have subscriptions for server bookings, email, web hosting, but have free publics because this is clearly never going to work no matter how long you say wait or what new plan you have round the corner, also bt have recently pulled out of servers all together because they cant make money.

And please no one say arrange a game on these forums, we just want to play a game not arrange one in a forum then play next week with 3 people, its just no good.

provide the servers/bandwidth for games servers and then say that they should be free ...

What about making a small fraction of the servers free and keep the better ones for subs. Even go as far as if you want a server for a new game(Devastation for example*) you need to sub.

* I know its crap but I couldn't think of a better example.

One or Two public servers for each game would be good, it would get people onto GAME.NET and get the subscribers back on and then the private servers might start filling.

I agree. Give free samples of your product and people are more likely to subscribe.

That said, GAME.net has been a boxed product for what? a week? Let's give it some time before damning the whole idea.

Many of these have been answered before and tbh I still feel opening a couple of public servers wouldn't work. The publics would be used but to suggest that would cause these people to sub just isn't going to happen, they did'nt want to P2P and won't even after using the public ones.

at the end of the day, if you make some of the servers free, then yes, those servers will be used, but that wont make more people subscribe so they can use the ones you need to be subbed for.

if anything, that will stop peeps from subbing, as they will think "why should i pay for game.net servers when i can play on these game.net servers for free".

because the public servers wont have stats and subs will get reserve slots? dunno :-]

I went into my local game (dundee) and said to the manager

"Excuse me but are you not promoting game.net?" (like a true spaz)

Manager: "Isn't that the internet thing?"
Me: "No it's a subscription to your very own gsp"
Manager: "I don't know much about it but this geek here does"
*he points to other game.geek*
game.geek "Oh yes, i use it for the ftp"
Me: "So no one who has subscribed plays games?"
Manager: "No, it hasn't taken off"
Me "I'm going to virgin, nobs"

No one who worked there knew what it was tbh and they didnt care. But he sold me prime early and cheap so I let him live.

Well, I get to play a large game of Operation Flashpoint at least twice a week, and a small game is running almost every night. And Battlefield 1942 is starting to pick up nicely, even before GAME.net starting being sold.

So I'm happy. All I need now are Raven Shield servers full of people and I'll never leave the house again.

idea

The fact is there are loads of free servers out there, so why pay?
I think game charge too much to play on the servers.

So why dont they after you have so many points on your card you have 4 weeks of free server gaming or every time you buy 1 game you get 4 free weeks on their servers, they would make more money this way and the servers would be used. :)

You've just kind of contradicted yourself there m8. First as you rightly say, there are free servers out there so why pay...and using that reasoning it doesn't matter how much GAME charge...why pay at all if you can get on another server for free?

Not flaming, just that I agree with the "if there are free servers, people won't pay" bit.

There are games on the game.net servers now. We had some great games of q3ctf last night and there are organised fixtures for various games throughout the week. Infact, my gf is getting pretty narked at me for being on the pc so much heheh. Give it a little time and they will be busy more and more, until you find you can jump on them any time for a quick blast.
Lets face it, you are never going to get all that game/bw are offering for free. Rather than give up on the idea, have a look at the event diary and join in a few of the games.
All online gaming will be subscription eventually. You can't get this for free for ever ...... and I'd rather it was game/bw that made a success of it, than someone else in the future.

yeah Xtro i'm just saying that people don't like paying for servers full stop, but the fact no one plays on them, then it would be a waste to pay to play on servers that are empty.

If gave made a deal were the more points you get the longer you get free servers would mean that players not only buy games from them but the servers get used.

everybody wins

i'm thinking of signing up just so maybe they will give me free webspace :)

Hmm, I worked out the other day that bookable servers cost about 3p an hour, hardly expensive.

As for the points thing, well, you can use your Reward Card vouchers to buy subs in store right now. Converting points directly into subs time is something we'll be able to do in the future, but points still have a value and you'll still be 'paying'.

Give the store promo more time, we're adding new games and new promos in the stores all the time as well as more training to get the staff to understand GAME.NET better, its a lot more complicated then simply selling a game, and some stores will 'get it' more quickly than others.

I love pitching silly ideas, so here goes...

Have you got anyone who is going around the stores explaining to concept? Given how important the multiplayer aspect of gaming is becoming, having an online service is going to become very important to PC gaming sales, even more so as the rest of the industry goes P2P.

Currently when we have a special promotion on at work, Sky come round and fill our lives here with silly little games, and shower us with leaflets and free gifts. It might help to drum up some more interest from staff, though I realise it may not be quite as suited to a retail enviroment as it is to a contact centre.

I'd be happy to quit my job and do this for you, for a price, of course.;)

Getting back onto the original question guys... honestly...
I heard about Game.net and read a bit about it through the Game website, have been visiting the site for a few weeks and have seen that a lot of the non-clan servers are always empty...

BFD I say, I know these kind of things take time and I signed up for 12 months the other night... not played any games yet but its re-assuring that so much effort is being put in by you regular players and "vets" of BW, etc... to organise weekly games across the board.

Everything like this takes time and if it means I get the opportunity to be a part of a bigger online gamers community then its worth it... cos frankly I'm bored to tears playing Q3A, UT, MOH, et al on my own against dodge AI bots :(

So c'mon Sauron, give it a chance...

there, think I've waffled enough now :)

when I get my new poota done this weekend I _will_ be subbing (strange though that may sound, but I think this thing may get off the ground once it reaches a certain critical mass).
