Self Moderation

possibly, but it depends what you want doesn't it? I for one would prefer to leave the ultimate levels of moderation where they are. An idea like Shovel's, where a limited ban may be put in effect when a post edit/'quiet word' sadly fails seems a good enough compromise.

perhaps we aren't fully aware of what the staff want though, and a more clear explanation would be in order.

Hear hear. Indeed, we've spent 120 posts discussing what we would want and ideas to improve things from a user point of view,of which "having a hard line" didn't come up. Maybe we (as users) are looking for a respect and maturity aproach - or at least, that is where our focus appears to be.

Yes there will always be twats in the world who will get permabanned the same day they register, but that is the world. Most of the discussion today has been about how to moderate people who want to be here.

As TDC says though, what do the admins want? As that - ultimately - determines whether we (those who's names are down as "we want to be moderators") want to be a part of it.

And please, can those with an unhealthy obsession with ego and power hunger consider that maybe some people want to do this because they like the community?

Shovel - Considering what has been posted in here over the years the fact I would say probably 10 "regular" posters have been dealt with by banning / suspension suggests that we are not nearly as unfair or lacking in respect for people who post here as you would make us out to be.

I have also had people mailing me or saying to me privately that they are happy to see us cracking down on certain individuals and that we should continue to do so, but most would probably not post that here for fear of getting a bollocking from other forum members.

I was joking! And its not an obsession, just a vague interest.

I'm not saying that the current modding system is disrespectful - I'm very sorry if that's what came across. Can you see though how a very "external" way of modding - where some of the mods don't post very much in the community - could - in some cases (not all) - come across in a way you don't mean to?

One of the goals with community admins could be to make them closer to the community from the outset?

I certainly support trying to improve the community and a lot of the persistant "shite" content was certainly getting tiresome.

<bob> I wrote this </bob> http://forums.gamesdomain.co.uk/announcement.php?s=&forumid=2. It's way ott for here as it was obviously not done with here in mind but BT's "no potential lawsuits" frame of mind. However it was enforced <bob> I did that </bob> and it worked very well.

Tbh I don't think the problem here has ever been freedom vs censorship, it's just been that nobody knows where that "line in the sand" is, so when anyone crosses it there's hooplah. Somebody should find it on a map & then put up a "the line is here" picture (first person to do a JPEG or GIF of a line wins llama of the year so far award).

As for Bif's "hard line" I'd be more than willing to crack the whip if it was acceptable with everybody else, because:
  • I know it'd get done, because I'd be doing it - my experience with GD definatly taught me that "right = self"
  • I think I've already proven before now that I'm trustworthy, I mean while I was working for GD you guys didn't even have to revoke my BW news login or take me off the various lists etc.[/list=a]

A reality check here guys :

I know I'm not one of the old hands but enough of you probably know me well enough to realise (as was said on irc :D ) that I'm not some passing lamer. I have to be brutally honest here - you have no chance whatsoever of keeping the forums here remotely like what they used to be. Reason : little "Timmy's" mum (quite rightly) won't like it - and parents aren't going to give kids money to sub to services that they disapprove of. Have a think about what age you were when you first found BW? For lots of you this will be 12-16 (the so-called formative years)? Some of you now have kids - want them to read these forums?

I think there's a clear cut choice here - you either :

a) Want the forums to continue as they are and stuff the gaming side;
b) Want the P2P model to work.

I don't care much either way as I have yet to be convinced that subbing to game.net is actually going to work for gamers - I hope it does but......

How many times does this have to be said in different ways...

I think we've got the picture just about now

If I had kids I would probably be quite happy to let them read what goes on in here. Do you honestly think kids haven't heard worse in the playground/at school before they come on here? I know I had (Slightly different situation, but I was far from sheltered as a child, I could watch/read what I wanted from a pretty young age - I still remember watching Alien when I was 4 - and tbh I seem to have turned out a hell of a lot better than people who had their viewing content censored). More importantly, when I was in my early teens, my parents also avoided the trap that you and most of the rest of the holier than thou mob seem to fall in pretty regularly - they didn't patronise the hell out of me.

Remember mate, they are kids, not retards.

It's not often I totally agree with everything somebody says, but I'm completely with you on this one Bods.

IMO, children are a lot more likely to live a better life when they've grown up, if they've not been sheltered from the 'bad' things. My parents have always pretty much given me freedom to see whatever I want, and I'm glad they have.

I also hate censorship, but that's another story.

Best choice would be from the current roster of mods, cos chucking someone in at the deep end in here is asking for trouble...
