I dont really understand whats prompted it? I mean I'm no fan of scientology and of course its all based on science fiction but they dont really seem to do any particular harm to the greater community.

Better off picketing your local Christian or Muslim church if you want to protest at the evils of religion.

My suspicion is that these protestors were in fact Christians trying to drive out competition.

Have to agree, in the sense that, if you want to riot against a religion, going against scientology is like going against fluffy bunnies with flowers as weapons with a tank.

Scientology is basically a pyramid scheme and a cult; its not really a religion at all, and, unlike Christianity, or even Islam (here in the West anyway), it tries to suppress dissent, or even information about its activities, through the dodgiest legal shenanigans. Don't get me wrong, I detest all organised religion, but I like the way Anonymous is using its own methods to screw around with these arseholes.

More information on the scientology protests, and flyers that were handed out.

Scientology isn't harmless, it's a money spinning cult that will seemingly do anything to protect itself, see Lisa McPherson and pretty much anything from this wiki page (yes I know it's wikipedia).

I still think things like the Catholic church are 1000000000 X worse than Scientology because they have the power to screw people on a massive scale - just look at the Catholic churches stance on Condoms and all the nonsense its been spreading in Africa and South America about condoms having holes put in them and giving people Aids - that must have killed thousands if not tens of thousands of others and blighted millions of lives - how can the actions of scientology merit anything while such 'Religions' go un-opposed?

Its all bloody nonsense and the people organising this must have their eyes shut or have a motivation nothing to do with bringing down evil religions.

All organised religions are Pyramid schemes - money filters up to the guys at the top - look at the Pope for the richest Pyramid scheme in history.

All religions try to supress dissent - we still have frigging blasphemy laws on the books - what the hell do you think those are meant to do :p

As for supressing information on its activities again number 1 in that area has to be the Roman Catholic church - hell it even managed to become its own country so it would never have to share any of its financial details with a government.

The only difference between Scientology and the major religions is size - because its small its more vulnerable but its impossible to say its worse or even as bad as the existing powers of organised religion.

Oh and on cults v religion - a cult just lacks enough members to become establishment - nothing more nothing less.

Add a thousand years to that and you'd be closer :)

It established itself as the official Roman religion about 380 AD and came to the UK around the same time - it waned a bit when the Roman empire died but then was reinforced by missionairies from the pope about 597 AD.

Rynnor, what's your point? I don't think anyone had a particular love of organised religion. This thread was about people having a pop at scientology, and more power to them. Sure, people should be picketing the Vatican, but they're not. However its not like most organised religions aren't getting a lot of negative public scrutiny is it?

My dating was more to do with the actions of the religious following rather than its establishment.

Not entirely fair, as the Church also opposes adultery and sex before marriage. If people would also stick to that, condoms wouldn't be needed to prevent AIDS (yes, this is an exaggeration, but you get my point). Add to this that the priests who deal with concrete situations are given some more liberty and the stance of the Church isn't that bad. It's in principle against condoms, but in a pastoral ethics which deals with specific people in specific situations you're allowed to use a condom if not using it would cause more harm.

(I'm not entirely sure if these pastoral ethics are an actual stance of the Vatican, but the Church is more than just the Vatican. It's definitely what I've been taught in a course "Christian sexual, marital and family-ethics" at a catholic university though. The teacher was a priest as well.)

Catholic priests as teachers of 'Family Ethics'? How can an unmarried, (supposed) virgin be qualified to teach Sexual, Marital and Family Ethics to anyone? :eek6:

I think the main point is that these Anon guys are most likely a bunch of Christians knocking the competition. And going after scientology rather than the other organised religions is like prosecuting a litter lout while letting the murderers go free.

I though pyramid schemes were illegal? or you had to be a moron to join one.

I think we should start a new religion based on FH. I am sure Trem could create something interesting.

Nah, they're not. Go and look at the people on the demos. The main complaint is very much from the web utopianism angle.

I still cant see whats so bad about it - the bible and Koran both encourage their followers to kill non-followers yet they are mainstream religions - is this any different to what was written in scientology?

Plus this stuffs mostly over 30 years ago - most of those involved are dead now?

I dont see how the death of one person by neglect can be held up against the other religions hundreds/thousands/millions of deaths often directly attributable to that religion rather than neglect?

How many Jehova's witnesses die every year because they refused blood transfusions due to the interpretation of something written in a book a thousand + years ago - thats crazy :p

Maybe being an atheist gives me a different viewpoint but I just cant see it?

You are so very wrong.

If you ever happened to pop to either 4chan or 7chan, you'd realise that they *hate* near enough all religions.

Also people can't seem to see that anon isn't attacking beliefs, those who are, are not anon, same with those who use violence etc, these are not anon.

Anon is merely attempting to show that Scientology is a brainwashing cult with the intent of extort it's members, extortion, last I looked was illegal but somehow Hubbard is getting away with it on the premise of religion and donations.

I don't see why you think Scientology should not be stigmatised, yes all other religions do the whole donation thing but in Scientology, this is mandatory as well as courses (which you have to pay for) which brainwash the members (and are required to stay as a member).

The fact of the matter is, Scientology is a massive extortion machine except they lack morals, they will do anything to discredit people, this means going as far as phoning everyone in their area, telling them they're a paedo/heroin addict/schizo etc.

All anons doing is basically giving them a taste of their own medicine.

Scientology must be stopped and I fully back this campaign.

Freddyontology?

Freddianity?

Surely the point is people choose to join religions like scientology - no matter how misguided that choice - I personally would love to choose for the rest of humanity that it became atheist like me but I dont have any rights to - surely by acting on behalf of freedom of the internet they are curtailing freedom of religion?

In this they are far from alone though - many religions have mandatory tything - the Mormons, lots of christian evangelicals/fundamentalist etc. etc. the list is very long.

The Mormons are at least as bad - everyone must tythe, everyone must work in the community, children are separated from their families and sent abroad, indoctrinated on courses and sent to spread the word, anyone who leaves gets cut off from their family etc. etc. and as for a dodgy past the Mormons used to have a secret police within the church that used to leave burning crosses outside the houses of any the elders thought were going astray and if neccesary would disappear them.

There are also reports of them killing settlers to steal their women in order to continue polygamy and a fair chunk of the mormons broke off from the church and still practice polygamy, with lots of reports of rape/child abuse and incest.

Compared to this Scientology looks whiter than white?

The really bad cults keep their heads down and live apart from the rest of the community - scientology is an open book compared to these.
