If GoA expect an accounts owner to be inquestion they will shut down the account, its up for hte owner to contact them through Rightnow.

Any contact with GoA would go through Rightnow each support issue gets its own reference number matters wouldnt be handled through emails, even if they were the reply domain would be an official GoA one not some free mail providor, additionaly GoA run the game in Europe not Mythic - why the hell would Mythic be involved in potential account theft for a game they dont host.

GoA dont use "secret words" just a subscription name and password

So.... looks geniune to me :)

i remember finding a site some years ago, that all u had to do was write the email of the victim you wanted into it, and it would sign that account up to about 9k known email spammers, who in turn would pass that on etc, and the victim would get some thousands of spam emails every day (insta filling inbox as soon as u deleted them :p ) oh how i had some fun with taht.

Yep, I used a mailbomber program with that feature about 6 years ago. I signed Slainyou (real life mate of mine and DAoC player) up to every sick, dirty and perverted site on the list which was over 3000 iirc, had a good chuckle when he phoned me asking me for help to stop all these porn emails he was getting :D

We all enter an email address into anything and everything, including forums, newsgroups etc. The important thing to note is that no organisation you have signed to will ever send you an email asking you to verify your details. :)

A bit like this one I got today, which is odd coz I have never banked with Barclays :)

Dear ***** (email address was here)
,

We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your Barclays IBank account

from a different IP address.

If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual log in

attempts may have been initiated by you. However, if you did not initiate

the log ins, please visit Barclays IBank as soon as possible to check-up your

account information:

** Link removed, it was here..

Thanks for your patience.

Sincerely,

Barclays Centre

I always wondered that about forums ... a lot of people use their primary email adress to sign up for forums AAAAND they'll use a "standard" password... so the one they use for that forum is often the same for all forums .. and for things like msn and stuff...

So basicly anyone who sets up a forum could be potentially using the information he gets from this to hax

I do think you should send this information to GOA GoldenThong. The name of that forum. They should look into this.

I guess they're playing on the whole confusion people have of GOA/Mythic as well..

it's spoofed as from: noreply@goa.com but it's signed by Brian Johnstone, Mythic Entertainment ;)

In these cases there's only 1 thing to do.... here's what i did:

---
Greetings!

I would like to inform you that one of the users of your email service is using
the email for scamming purposes.

There is an online multiplayer game called Dark Age of Camelot, which is
subscriber based. Every subscriber has his own login name / password. All the
accounts are secured like that.

People spend a lot of time and effort in that game, which is why security of their
account is important. There are several scammers active trying to get hold of
account information by pretending to be the host of the game (Mythic
Entertainment).

One of these scammers is sending out bogus emails using a Runbox account. I'll
include the email here so you can see the exact scam:

-----------------
Hello, this is GOA Europe technical support contacting you regarding an account
theft. It has come to our knowledge that you are not the rightfull owner of this
account, and we will shut it down for further investigation if you don't prove us
wrong.
To prove yourself innocent, send an email back to Mythic@runbox.com (Due to this
is a one way email, and cannot take replies)
Containing your email registered to the account and the answer on your secret
question to it.
We need this information to contact your email provider and see if there has been
any inconvinience regarding your account.

Best regards , Brian Johnston. Mythic Entertainment

-----------------

Now, most people recognise this email as a scam. However, the game is
international, and not everyone has the same knowledge and understanding , and
some people will mistakenly give out their account info.

I hope you can verify this and take the appropriate measures, i can't imagine
Runbox would appreciate their customers using your service for scamming purposes.

Best regards.

And Runbox' quick response:

Hello,

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. The account in question has now
been closed.

The exact same email has gone out to WoW users as well, only with Blizzard as sender etc. Cant find the thread about it on blizzards craptastic forum now, but was a runbox account used there as well, only with blizzardsupport@runbox or some such instead. Same name used etc, and exact same wording, just substituted daoc for wow and mythic for blizzard.
