Well the difference here as i see it, is that actual "retards", i.e. mentally handicapped people, can't and won't defend themselves - making them an easy target of an insult for people to use without having to worry about someone biting back. People who use the word as an insult may not think of its real implication, but those of us with handicapped relatives do - and it's something we've sadly gotten used to over the years.

I wouldn't expect the kids to stop using the word as they don't know better, but the older the person is, the sadder it makes me. Usually i try to write it down as innocent ignorance - as most people wouldn't know what it's like to love and respect someone who is "retarded".
