Eclipse was a bit of a letdown; supposed to be 94% coverage here and it's a cloud free day but it just went a bit darker and you couldn't really see a disk or anything. I remember the last one I saw in London years ago was very distinct (watched it on a roof just off Oxford street), maybe because it was in the middle of the day.

Your avatar is very fitting for this 1/5 sun review, let me down.

I agree though - it got darker a bit earlier...

We were apparently supposed to get over 97% down here but it went a bit dusky for about a minute and... that was that. The sun was practically down over the horizon (hills to the west) anyway. Waste of about 15 minutes of anticipation.

Phone only picked up a disk of light - but when eyeballing directly at 'peak' I could see a very thin crescent of sun, and a dark disk covering nearly all of it.

Well, I could for about two seconds before I had to look away. :)

We had too much cloud cover here when it reached peak eclipse so it was a bit of a failure. I did get to see some of the before and after though. It didn't get very dark at all.

Guinea Fowl attacked by a goshawk yesterday. I ran out but not in time - I heard her make a gawd awful sound (which is haunting me) before the goshawk flew off.

Found her last night, running about, all bright. Penned her away to give her a chance but she has a big hole in her neck.

Just verified a crop puncture. She's drinking, but it's just falling out of her. So I have to do the dirty.

Just had two emergency notifications.

One in Welsh. One ten minutes later in English.

Made the o/h jump, twice. And she was worried after the Welsh one because it was an emergency notification that she couldn't understand. What if it was about fire in our local area? Were we in danger? It's got to be important for all our phones to go off.

They were to say there is a temporary nationwide ban on the sale of disposable barbecues.

Money well spent eh.

They also warned about lighting fires not just BBQs. Obviously it was a waste of money sending it to your phone as you clearly didn't read it properly.

I opted out of emergency texts ages ago @Deebs - it made me jump whilst driving the car  - it went to both of hers.

I'm glad I opted out. "Don't act like a retard" isn't an emergency.

To be fair, they should say "Quick! Quick! Stab yourself in your eyeballs!" and see who turns up at A&E. We could euthanase them. Save the country a fortune.

I mean, we were having a conversation and suddenly that was all over, because of pointless government messaging, so I think that's a fair point.

How many government people come into your house and drag your attention from what you're doing, without invite?

It was supposed to be for emergencies.

Setting an alarm off on silenced mobile phones to say "we're banning barbecues" isn't an emergency, is it?

And how does texting the whole country help with this?

To be clear - I'm not belittling what's happened - I live in the Conwy valley - not far from Synchnant Pass that was on fire a couple of weeks ago, and was at a farm in Maentwrog the other day and there was a large fire right nearby. All of fucking Wales was on fire last year. There were major burns in my area very recently.

So yes. How does texting the whole country help? It's a fucking misuse of an emergency system.

If this isn't an emergency, I don't know what is.

If it prevents one person from using a BBQ and creating a fire (Which I presume has been found to be the source of some of the fires, hence the Government rushing a ban) then I'd say it's absolutely worth 'interrupting a conversation'.

Surely you'd be alright with your moat? Plus, I'm not sure if ivory is particularly flammable.

Considering the whole country is like a tinderbox then yes it is justified. Bans are in effect for hosepipes due to running low on drinking water, which is a bugbear of mine, we are a fucking island, invest those fat cunt profits into the infrastructure and not salaries, desalination plants would be a good start.

I can guarantee you that if the ability to send the alerts we received today was available in 1976 then your phone would have been singing the same tune.

The public use of disposable barbecues and open campfires has sparked multiple serious wildfires across the UK during the current heatwave. As temperatures have peaked over 38°C and 37 significant blazes continue to burn across England and Wales, the government has just issued an unprecedented temporary ban on the sale of all disposable barbecues

To be fair I am happy if the fire service withholds water destined for Wales to be used in England.

People like this anger me. So this person thinks he knows it all and lights a bbq in or near a field. What precautions has he taken in the event a gust of wind blows hot coals out of his bbq? He knocks the skewer holding his kebabs onto the grass? He or someone in his party knocks the bbq?

He is like the people that drive and say I will never have an accident as I am a good driver but their car is about to fail an MOT or they suffer a brake leak and say it is ok I will get it looked at when I find the time.

He's saying that an emergency text to tell the whole country that retards shouldn't be fucking using barbecues on tinderboxes is an abuse of a system that is supposed to warn of an imminent threat to life.

If we are using it to put out public information messages - for this is what it is - then it's not an emergency system.

The sort of retard that continues to use barbecues, or throws his fucking fags down, in this sort of weather isn't going to change his unthinking behaviour because he got a fucking text message from the government.

Edit: BTW - if it was an emergency, then they wouldn't have sent the first text in Welsh to the people of Wales - given 83% of the population don't speak fucking Welsh.

Yes I was. I was talking with my girlfriend about her best friend, who has cancer. She was very upset. It's her friend's birthday today and she's visiting the week after next because she wants to have a rest as she's just finished her last bout of chemo. She needs to chill before they cut her tits off and her lymph nodes out. She's bringing her kids with her - and knows that of all the places in the world she is going to get looked after here and I'll take care of the kids whilst they chill out together. Hopefully not for the last time.

I was VERY fucking pissed off that in the middle of trying to console my partner an alarm for retards by retards added to her worries.

So thanks.
