Isn't this relatively hypocritical? I mean, if anything, smoking is worse than being obese in the respect of blaming the 'individual' or the 'individuals parent'

If you're smoking, you know it's killing you, sure it's very fucking hard to quit, but you still are fully aware.

Food - It's cheaper and easier to take your kids to McDonalds than it is to cook a meal at home (Or atleast that's what people have stuck in their heads.) So there's the financial aspect, and the aspect that we're a great deal lazier, so it's literally -easier- to do that, so why not eh?

People get into a vicious cycle of this, they literally -need- to have McDonalds - I have so many friends now who will go on a 'diet' - and in all fairness, they'll lose weight, but they literally can not cut McDonalds out of their lives.

You may be thinking 'Wtf' at my use of McDonalds as an example, but frankly, this is the issue, it's not the fact that people will go to the shop and buy a huge bag of chocolate and eat it in one night, it's the fact that people will eat colossal amounts of unhealthy food as a part of their 'main meals'

Again, it comes down to economics, and also comes down to education.

Exercise - People don't do it anymore, unhealthy eating is exactly new - I mean, my Grandad ate a fucking -load- all through his life, he LOVED his man butter, he'd literally slap on a mountain onto a doorstop wedge of bread, this was OK when he was working and was active, retired - boom, he got fat, very fast.
You talk so much bollocks

@Gwadien the point I was making is the embarrassment I feel for my addiction, I hide it, I hate it.

People aren't embarrassed to wheel their babies into Greggs and plonk a pie in it's hand.

But you get the fresh vegetables from Iceland. Frozen and in a bag, but 5 minutes in the microwave and boom, you have very, very fresh tasty vegetables ready to eat. And they cost nothing.

Oh and I don't have kids, but I have enough friends who do to know that if you feed them a decent diet, they'll love vegetables.
I have some friends who try very very hard to make their kids eat right. One of them has a daughter who will refuse to eat and make her self cry until she throws up. She eats pasta and chicken nuggets and nothing else. They have been to see all kinds of people to try and get this sorted and the School have grassed them to the council but the kid will not eat anything else.

"grassed them to the council". What the fuck?

To be honest, my youngest isn't far off that. He eats carbs (pasta, rice, potatoes) and cheese. We've broadened his repertoire to fish fingers (actually fish pieces in breadcrumbs) and spaghetti carbonara. But that's it. He'll eat peas on rare occasions, and we haven't been able to work out why. The doctor's attitude is "he's healthy, growing and not anaemic, don't worry about it". Doesn't mean we don't though. But then my Mum says I wasn't far off that when I was a kid and didn't eat a green vegetable until I was a teenager.

My daughter on the other hand is a human dustbin and will try any food at least once.

My dad used to say "if you were in the desert and starving, you'd eat it".

When I was a kid I ate was put in front of me, otherwise I went hungry.
Your kids don't live in a restaurant, nor do they pay the bills.
Tough love.

I used to smoke Gauloises Blondes, well remembered Trem :) Edit: it took me over 5 years after quitting to realize that wanting one and being able to enjoy one were not the same heh. If I smoked a cig now I'd likely vomit or pass out or something 0o

Thing is, the guy lives in rooms atm as he's getting separated from his wife. He chain-smokes and went through a good part of a packet in about the time it took us to drink three beers each. That much smoke in a small room, pfff...

Tough love.

And when they don't eat it? Then what? We do the tough love thing, they get what they're given. Makes no difference. At this stage I'm convinced the boy is photosynthesising or something, because I can't see how he's thriving on the diet he eats.

I don't have kids, but I can remember being a very fussy eater as a child - I didn't eat junk per sé, but I would only eat certain things (veggie burgers and yoghurts primarily). I would simply skip dinner or not eat certain things in front of me as a result.

Looking back, it was trivial and irrelevant because I didn't starve and when puberty kicked in I was utterly ravenous and had no choice but to eat. I see similar patterns with my sister's kids - they're faddy, but they'll grow out of it eventually.

Then they realise that they are not in charge, and that hunger is no fun. It simply wasn't an option for me to choose, we weren't poor but my Mum cooked a meal and we ate it. Sometimes I might leave some of something I didn't like too much, but would eat the rest of the meal. If there was something that I just didn't like, and I can only think of liver and kidneys then she would avoid giving me that. That's not faddy eating though it's just not liking something the way we all do.
I think as a result I really do enjoy good fresh food. I also love to try foods I've not had, to the point of choosing something from a menu simply because it's new. I'm about to have a Pomelo after lunch, I'm hoping they are nice.

Yeah, you're not reading what I said. Its not about who's in charge, its about simply not eating and strangely not being bothered about not eating. He's gone to bed (theoretically) hungry, and simply not given a crap.

It's so shit mate, I have a photographic memory over really weird stuff but can't remember important things, I still remember the lads car registration plates from where I used to work but I don't know my kids birth dates :(

I'm with you on this one, I don't back down on tantrums or other bratty stuff but I find it impossible to see my kids not eat. My wife asks them what they want for tea but I just do it with the items I know they like. They are both healthy eaters for the most part, we have cut out bread from the boys diet because he was having far too much of it and he hasn't complained once. They have a McDonalds maybe once every 2 months.

Yeah when she said all Mummy and Daddy make me eat is bla bla and refused to eat at school for a week rather than talking to the parents they just told the council who sent a welfare bod round who had the same reaction as the Doctor had with you.

It's like the nursery where my son used to go. A dad (he was a cock though) was walking across the car park with his daughter and she was being naughty so he smacked her arse, a nursery nurse saw this and reported him to social services (he was a massive cock though), a tad extreme.

I used to go to bed without eating a lot because I refused to eat what I did not like. I have a violent reaction like I am going to vomit when I eat certain foods. Grapes are the worst they actually make me heave. It is not taste it is texture. Crispy veg is fine I like it. Over cook it and it is all squishy and I physically wretch. But when I did this as a kid my Dad thought I was just being an Arse and would not make something else so he made me sit at the table for at least an hour and if I still did not eat I got sent to bed early with nothing. Mum always gave me a big breakfast the next day though.

It is just arse covering I suppose. If the School know about it and do nothing they could be held responsible if the kid dies so just report it to pass the blame on.

I still have memories of being toLd to stand in the kitchen with my runner beans and i wasnt allowed to leave until i ate them. I gagged every time i tried to eat a mouthful. Eventually they gave up and made me peas with sundaydinner instead. Butstill got the mental scars.

I was once told to 'try' a brussel sprout, after protesting I don't like them, so I ate it, then threw up, everywhere, it was glorious.

Nope. No food in Montessori and then he's with his Mum the rest of the day.

Did you all eat meals with your parents?

For those with small humans, do you eat with your children?

Because she knows that works and she can get her own way.

Got a friends kid who pisses herself when she doesn't get her own way or as a punishment. But only when it's her mum taking her out. She won't get away with it with her dad - he'll let her sit in it, wet and uncomfortable, and make it known to the kid that it's her own fault and she has to take responsibility for that.

So she never does it round her dad, but her soft-touch mum has a hard life.

That kid should be left to cry until she throws up. Then she should be offered a proper meal. And if she doesn't eat it then she goes hungry. And she *never* gets given chicken nuggets again. Period. Then she'll come around quickly enough...
