scarabrae and broadside are dead levels too defensive and just don't work for clan matches or public servers.

They really are awful and make dod look good in comparison.

As for teamwork u just dont get any on uk servers unless there are alot of your clan on as well, a team of bots would display far more teamwork.

Why is it as soon as a map that requires some *skill* (new word?) and teamwork, to get the flag on, such as scarabrae, or broadside comes on on BW ctf base server, some idiot starts a vote to change map, and all the rest of you sheep follow right along to go to a *really exciting* map such as snowblind, or DC, which are about 5 mins of heavy skiing from end to end, with about as much gameplay variation as erm, something with not much variation. I mean, wtf is the matter with u ppl eh?

I think you will find that most of the pub servers are populated by newbies or wannabes, with the odd smattering of tribed players either tuffing it out in public or aliasing in smurfland
smile.gif

So when a tough map comes around, it's probably a map that the newbies/wannabes get slaughtered on regularly, so they vote for something less complex in an effort to maximise their online enjoyment.

Thing is - once these folks join a tribe, and get used to playing in a team - their perspective usually changes and their preferences for more challenging maps follows.

Either way - I think perhaps that is what you are hitting on the pubs, just ppl who want to play but don't want the hassle of depending on the 'team' aspect of the game because they are not currently affiliated with any tribes.

I think Alco has a point here.

There is one map that everybody seems to hate. That is everyone but a number of SS ppl. Yes, you know the map...

Desert Of Death.

So why do people always vote to change it?
Why do people hate this map so much?
I can tell you why. It is because there are no invs. You have to battle in light, most times naked without a pack. In my opinion, DoD is one of the most balanced maps there is in the map collection. It requires skill with the base weaponry and skill to outmanoever your opponents when you're carrying the flag.

Alas, a fair number of people don't even know the map because it almost always gets voted to another map.

Broadside/Scarabrae are too defensive. Takes little to no skill to defend them. Too many 0-0 in clan games... boring to watch.

As for DOD, I can't stand the layout of the map. Having to pick up weapons scattered around the map reminds me too much like Quake

DoD - as a HPB turret monkey extraordinaire - this map puts me out of a job!
I'll leave it to the LPB chaingun freaks

Scara, Broad/Blastside - Scara is boredom, but I am quite happy to change servers, Broad/Blastside can be fun sometimes but I dont see many caps - I just practice my mortar shots...

Well I was talking about playing these on a public server funny enuff, not in clan games, hence the *voting* to change map comment... Its almost always the badged players that start shouting to change maps as well, rather than the newbies, as no doubt they feel the need to show off some l33t skillz on a fast paced map. BS and Scara are good maps for new players I think, especially Scara, as u actually get to buy some bits at an inv station, or go on an apc trip to the enemy base (yeah, some ppl do still use em, I've seen it :p), rather than having a bunch of ppl whove been playing the game for months come flying past em in heavy armour, wipe out their gens, or invs, and spend the rest of the game (all 5 mins of it) doin the same thing. Now sure, it takes a bit of skill, but lets face it, there aint that many ppl these days who cant do end to end on DC or SB in a matter of seconds. An besides, who gives a shit if game is 0-0 on a pub server.. as long as everyone gets to do some attacking an defending, an have a good time. An lets face it, if youre all as good as u think u are, then how hard can getting a flag from a bunch of pub. server ppl be eh?

It's not all bad news though...

I've been playing a lot on the BW C&H and Custom CTF servers lately, both as myself [SS-01]Coyote and under various aliases.

The good news is that I'm seeing more and more untribed people calling for, and working within a team effort.

These are not skilled / tribed players under aliases...those buggers are off ski-slipping and trashing bases
smile.gif
These are the average joe soaps who are beginning to get into the game. I see the same names all the time, and they are getting better skill wise as the weeks pass.

Most relevant is the latest trend to act as a team, call for team work and then when it all works - you see them celebrate big style because its a new experience to them, its fresh.

THIS is what we should be promoting, protecting and nuturing on public servers, because it's these ppl who get enjoyment out of the game NOW that will hopefully end up joining your Tribes and teams later on.

Hmm.. first alco- all change map like sheep? - leave the sheep alone m8 ;P... seriously we play pubbys for fun and there are a few dead boring maps in tribes namely scarabrae which is ok for league games but the majority of pubbys are full of newbies and the game sucks as one team rapes the other... hence league games will always 0wn pubbys where in a league almost any map can be exciting - the teams make the game rather than the map - so whenever it comes round to scara i vote to change unless i really want to fart around for 29mins then 0wn the tower within the last few seconds... no fun.. no fun at all...

Scabby Ray always gives me a good chance for a chinwag and a change of pace. Personally i think it can be a fun map.
Feel free to shred my opinion

I think Broadside is an OK public server map, because the distance between bases isnt so long u can get back to keep pressure on, and hopefully as its a public server no-one will have got around to repair yet

Scarabrae is an utter abortion of a map for many reasons.
Firstly the unsuitablility of Tribes generally for indoor gameplay :
Splash weapons - Mortar, Disc, Plasma, Mine, Hand Grenade.
These have very severe and large splash damages (well plasmas not that big), which means that it takes zero skill to maim an attacker in a bottleneck doorway or corridor.
Player physics - pretty much no usable air control indoors, ground friction/acceleration is appaling making a direction change very slow, and dodging nigh on impossible, especially with the large splash weapons.
Spawining with powerful weapons very near to critical bottlenecks : So an attacker killed u? so what? u respawn between them and the flag, or if they have it, between them and their exit, u spawn with a weapon that has a large splash and does about 75% damage in one shot.
Throw in some remote turrets and you have a formula that means that a competent clan can draw a caln far far better by playing defensive. Even on a pub server if one person is defending he counts as about 3 becuase he just respawns in base with disc launcher.
APC attack? No problem, just chaingun the apc down, which even I can do with my poor modem chaingun aim.
Scarabrae is the pinnacle of appaling level design.

I have to disagree in part with Fusion about DoD too, making u collect items means that staying alive has a much bigger incentive and cuts down suicide spam by defenders that know they can be back in position with full kit in seconds. It is more quake like with only one armor class, maybee a vehicle station or collectable medium armor hehe would make it acceptable for U.

I see the VERY problem with what Alco is saying.

I was on the BW base CTF server tonight, and I counted about half a dozen attempts to change the map. There were 4 people who were voting no, and some players started getting abusive and saying things like "You're gay if you vote no". For the record, I was abstaining from the vote (just in case Captain Picard is reading this, yes you were the most abusive in my opinion).

My main problem is that some people don't even know about certain maps because they get changed so quickly. How many here can say they know the Open Call or Balanced maps as well as the base CTF ones? Or C&H/D&D/F&R for that matter.
