I've got an urge to play a bit of PS again but i don't have the new X-Pack CoreCombat, do i need to buy this to play PS? And if i don't how will i be disadvataged?

Not having the expansion won't hinder you in the slightest - you can still do all the things you used to plus more, when you consider the new bundled certs
