its not sommit stoopid like make a triangle with 3 of em, the use the fourth to cut it in half, making a small triangle at the top and a KINDA square at the bottom? yer know, if you dont believe in right angles?

Now you are asking the right sort of questions Neffneff but I won't answer them for you.. you have to figure it out for yourself!

well there is only ONE definition of square -

Having four equal sides and four right angles.

anything else isnt actually a square.

so are you asking for a square or a random shape of 4 sides?

that is a very questionable square, as Tris say a square is equal on all sides with 4 corners :p

If it doesn't need to be a square like it's described in the dictionary (A plane figure having four equal sides.) it is actually piss easy.

But then you shouldn't have called it a square but a "Shape with 4 corners" or something.

I would have known it in seconds it's the "square" bit that got me confused :(

yes, the L shaped square is all there? dont think square as in 4 corners, four sides, because it is impossible to do that according to the question, after all a square has 4 corners, and a triangle has 3 corners, yet we had to do it in less than 7 corners.

think square as in tool you use to check right angles. you get L shaped things for that.

Three matches in a triangle, one in the middle. So there's two triangles that would form a square.

Nobody said anything about the square being whole *grin*

Rofl Neff very interesting way of solving it ;)

No your first solution:
untitled.jpg

Was what topicstarter meant (I think) however her description of the shapes required were a bit ... unclear?

Had a mate who's a mathteacher (poor him) define it for me: "A square has 4 sides the same lengths, 2 pairs of parrallel sides and all interior angles must be 90 degrees" so naturally I discarted that solution as that shape doesn't meet those requirments.

cant be the first one i did, as it has 7 corners, therefore doesnt fit origianl task.

its gotta be the last one i did, as its the only "square" that can be made properly, and with less than 7 corners.

I dunno, again it goes by what you mean as corners. It has 3 corners that I can see, 7 internal angles though, but since when have they indicated corners?

But then if the puzzle poster classed a trapezium as a square, then anything goes I guess!
