after reading the shopping bill thread with some concern, I've decided to log the foodstuffs I purchase on a daily basis. You can join me if you like.

I'll be doing it for a whole day at once, however I'm going to log the first few things here right away or I'm going to forget them:

coffee, breakfast muesli bar and packet of gum: 4.05e
coffee (with full savings card) 0.90e
lunch sandwiches and OJ 8.70e

This means I've already spent my imagined allotment of foodmoney for today, and I still have to get dinner.

well they were butcher's lunchmeats, and I'd expect to pay 3 euros for a glass of fresh OJ nearly anywhere in the NL tbh.

Today I have bought

Vending machine latte - 50p
gourmet burger and large latte - 6.50 (be claiming that in expenses though, so probably doesnt count)
4L of water, pack of spicy pepperoni, couple pints of milk, peanut and caramel chocolate bar, loaf of bread - about 4 quid.

I cheat in a way:

one loaf of bread - reduced to 32p
one cheese-crust-stuffed margarita pizza - reduced to 80p
one bread and butter pudding with custard - reduced to 40p

---

Some good advice to get down costs:

- reductions: fresh meat frozen is just as good as fresh meat (fresh meat being meat in a packet in this case - ofc you can't beat the fresh-fresh butchers stuff).

- pound shops: you can get the same branded stuff in pound shops as in supermarkets. My local pound shop does 120 typhoo tea bags for a quid; galaxy hot chocolate for a quid; 12 packs of skips etc. for a quid.

- try the 'work up' idea. Buy the discount brand for the first week. Write down the nice discount brand stuff & the bad stuff. Upgrade the bad stuff week by week until your happy with it.

- learn to use spices, pepper, stock-cubes etc. Mix cornflour with water to beef up sauces etc.

I can't think of anything worse than buying the "cheap brand" stuff - it's usually cheap for a reason and that reason is it's full of refined sugar and additives. Fresh produce as much as possible from me.

You'll often find that branded & non-branded items are made on the same production line so the main ingredients are the same and this view of 'own brand' being full of crap is sometimes true but not always and in many cases, the branded stuff will have the same 'crap.'

The reason its cheaper is because of the 'less refined taste' (which is treated by using herbs etc.) and the fact it isn't branded. Most of the extra cost of brands is you paying for that brand.

I'd expect to get sucked off whilst drinking it at that price!

Noodles on toast, you classy bastard! With all the money you are saving I bet you could afford to buy Southampton Football Club or a packet of crisps, whichever is cheaper. :p ;) :D

Those noodles are awesome, I take the carroty bits out, and add a small amount of thai curry paste ( before cooking ) and soy sauce... ( after cooking ) you can also add chicken to it. nomnomnonmnomnomnonmko

The title of the thread is "purchased foodstuffs" not "purchased shit that you've stuffed down your gullet" :)

Whats your problem with expenses? Few weeks ago I racked up several hundred dollars in expenses - completely legitimate. Who cares if he's in the public employ? If he's on the road or doing some kind of hospitality thing then it's entirely justified.

my employer pays my expenses which i claim in line with their expenses policy.

if i am out of town on business between certain hours, i can claim up to a set amount for food and drink (£8.91).

scratch my previous coke, i ended up buying a pint of stella and 10 cigarettes if those count as nutrition. £6.25.
