Grr edit timer:

If you dont know what to buy i would go with the xbox as it has a bigger library of games, next year.. who knows it will be a close call

Probably a borderline comment but a xbox is far easier to hack to your personal preference (warning voids your warranty), whereas it is impossible on a ps3. However you can install linux on a ps3, swap the hdd to one of your own, and all games are region free (so you can play your japanese imports) out of the box without voiding your warranty.

To throw something else into the ring, if you want your missus to play games too your probably better off with a wii although i would wait till the prices drop back down to normal

Ps dont fall for this

I've got the same problem deciding which to buy except that i plan on spending around £300 on a HD ready TV at the same time as a buy a console. Leaning towards PS3 atm since i cant use xboxlive at my university and my housemate has a 360 anyway. still hard to decide though :l

Well if the ps3 works on the normal tv then i think it wins for me as it has the web browser which xbox does not appear to have. That means i can get rid of this monstrosity of an old p3 pc in the lounge and use the ps3 for web access. The fact its wireless out the box & that multiplayer gaming is also free wins it over for me.

Well for me most games of any of note (excluding GT5, FF13 and MGS4) coming out on either are also coming out on the PC eventually, though as with Gears of War look much better and are longer, for expandable and have far better multiplayer options. I came very near to being tempted into the PS3 with Haze but then found out its coming to PC too.
Obviously you need a pretty swanky PC to run them on, I had my two year upgrade a few months ago and it runs anything you chuck at it at full spec with the scope to whack another graphics card in to run SLI in a years time. If you can't afford the latest PC then a console is a good road to go down, both are relatively cheap compared to a PC £250ish for Xbox, £300ish for PS3 £600-£800 for a top end PC.
For me though I just can't play FPS games with a pad, no matter what anyone says you can't match keyboard/mouse.

I am tempted by a Wii for post pub fun but its pretty limited, only a handful of games that are worth getting.

Just to point out that GT (Grand Turismo) has and will never be out for the PC. Grand Turismo is one of the main reasons why i'll be getting a PS3 (quite sad really just for 1 game). Yes, intime there will be lots of games (good/great games) for the PS3.

For the poster I would get the Xbox 360 now and maybe in a years time get the PS3 as it will be alot cheaper and alot more games for it. As for quality from Xbox 360 to PS3 - there isn't much difference tbh, just price is alot different.

If you want fun and for the family to enjoy I would get the WII (never played it though) but im sure the games will get very zzzzzzz after playing the same ones over and over.

Ignore the fanboi'ism that will no doubt invade this thread (in fact it already has ><)
Simply look at what exclusives YOU want to play the most

Kane and Lynch is multi platform and you forgot prolly the best PS3 Exclusive Uncharted, which is visually stunning and a awesome game how it only got 80% i will never know.

/Fanboi...And i can't help myself the PS3 is better value for money :) Excelent media device divx ect and a DVD player you can watch (Xbox fans make it silly :)) and then the extras WiFi BluRay ect then the spares like the price diffeence in wireless rechargeable controllers.../Fanboi

Probably not, but then PS3 games will look shit stood next to a PC game in 5 years time, hell they will look pretty average compared to one in a years time.

My PC plays Crysis just fine, you could probably build it for £500ish today.

Sure consoles are nice for a year or two every five but for cutting edge games there is no option but to get a PC (if you can afford to ofc)

There are obvious perks to console gaming, with the PC games are often released to early and patched later which is a pain and a standard platform to work on for developers but there is so much more you can do with a PC, new video format? no problem, DL a new codec. With the consoles you have to wait for Sony or Microsoft to mess about with new firmware. As an all round media centre the PC beats anything hands down, as a games machine it easily matches the consoles today and is fully expandable.

PC gaming does cost a lot but then (imo) its worth it. Not to mention having to pay out £700 odd for a decent TV, ours is doing just fine, nice big CRT wide screen.

I really love PC gaming i would rather play all shooter games on the PC but i still think for casual gaming a consol might be the cheaper option?

Chronic...

Virtua Fighter 5 is not exlusive to PS3 and it is infact an inferior version to the 360 offering and lacks the online gameplay mode that 360 has.

Devil May Cry 4 is also not exclusive to PS3 and so far in previews the 360 version has been alot less framey than the PS3 version which is lagging behind in development.

Now for your list of games, you missed out quite a few on the 360 side which smacks of hypocracy (with reference to your fanboi remarks) on your behalf.

You negelected to mention games like...

Lost Planet
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
Topspin 2
Rainbow 6 : Las Vegas
Project Gotham Racing 3 (in many ways a better game than 4)
Viva Pinata

Ace Combat 6

Colin McCrae : Dirt
Call of Duty 2
Prey
Dead or Alive 4
Burnout : Revenge
Just Cause
Condemned
Flatout : Ultimate Carnage
Naruto : Rise of a Ninja
MotoGP 06
MotoGP 07
Perfect Dark Zero
Lord of the Rings - Battle for Middle Earth : 2

And I could go on. Yes I know that not every single one is 360 exclusive but an awful lot are and every single one rates at over 80% on Metacritic.

You all need to face facts, currently the 360 has a far superior catalogue of games and that will continue for some time to come, you need only take a look at the release shedule for the first 3 months of 2008 to see that.

+rep for you, a very reasoned and sensible post. The visual differences between 360 and PS3 are marginal and will remain so, purely because they are pretty evenly matched when it comes to GPU power (althought the 360 can pull of a couple of tricks PS3 can't).

ok i missed loads, hand on heart it wasnt on purpose just a rushed post of games off the top of my head (i missed loads of ps3 ones too :p)

But the point of the post was he should pick the console with the exclusives he wants to play, not a e-peen contest for which has the most games. After all if the ps3 had a million games, but the one game he wanted to play was on the xbox it would make getting the ps3 kind of pointless :p

AND....<makes shocked sound> Perfect Dark Zero, we dont mention this game ever!
How they have ruined a great game :/

First of all, the 360 has them and the PS3 doesn't, that is the point I was making as you bloody well know. All of them are good games that the 360 has and the PS3 doesn't and there are others. I didn't claim they were all exclusive, platform or otherwise but they are games the PS3 simply doesn't have and every single one of them is a good game.

Now I will make it real simple for you all, go here and see for yourselves...

Index of Xbox 360 Game Reviews by Score

Metacritic: Index of PS3 Game Reviews by Score

The PS3 has 39 games with a cumlative review score of 80% or over, Metacritic takes these scores from dozens of review sites and averages them out. The 360 has 81 games scoring 80% or over, this verifies exactly what I have been saying...

The Xbox 360 has a vastly superior catalogue of games at this time and will continue to do so for some time to come.

The first 3 months of 2008 are packed with quality releases for 360 and so that trend will continue until PS3 really gets out of the starting blocks which may not been until the end of 2008 by which time the 360 will have had another 150-200 titles published.

Got to agree, killed a great franchise. Not a bad game though, just not even close to being a worthy sequel/prequel to a legendary game.

xBox360 has Divx support now as well so thats no point in favour of the PS3.

My xbox happily plays any movie I throw at it from a portable hard drive plugged into a USB port on the xbox.

Soze, Metacritic doesn't do reviews, it merely compiles review scores from dozens of sites and averages the scores out.

As for Halo 3, it is a good game, not great but a long long way from bad. The multiplayer is great fun, especially 4 player split screen. You may not like it but I have 5 friends who come around to play it on my 50inch HDTV and they feking adore it.

As the saying goes, opinions are like arseholes, everybody has one. That doesn't make me, you or a bunch of journalists right though.

Lol you are seriously weird bud, there are 10 games on that list that will be pushing 90% review scores and you would trade them all for 1 game that might get 95% or so. You really are the king of the PS3 fanbois! :D

I am not sure if I should admire your stubborness or have you commited under the mental health act! :)

Ok i've been huntting around the net and there are games where you can't read the text if your playing on an sdtv which i think is going to rule out the ps3 for me as there is no way i am going to shell out £800 for a console and tv i could build myself a shit hot pc for that. And i am guessing this will also be a problem when browsing the web.

So even without the web browser and having to use a cable to get online (or pay £50 for wireless) and pay a subscription (all be it small) to play multiplayer i think i will be the proud owner of a 360 in about 2 weeks.

Sorry bud, I missed your browsing remark earlier. Yes browsing at SD is pretty horrific, certainly no replacement for a PC sadly.

So browser is no use if i cant use it.

Now whats the chance of me getting a 360 that won't break?

New ones with the 65nm CPU are proving much more reliable, they also consume less power under full load than the original 90nm based 360 did at idle. It has roughly 50watts less heat to dissapate which is a 30% reduction, this should make the console very very reliable.

Sounds good. How do i know which is which? Is it in the name as i see some called Pro and some called Premium which seem to be the same model? Also whats the score with charging up the controllers?

You can buy a recharge kit for about £12?? that gives you batteries and a recharge lead.

Depends how good the game is when released :) I have been getting better at playing more different games with the fre demos on PSN but before i just used to buy games i knew and liked so i have a one track mind when it comes to games i know and like :)

All the new Pro's built after September should be the new model, you can check with the shop before you buy, the manufacturing date should be on the box.

As for charging, get a charging kit as the batteries last a good 20+ hours of gaming. You can use your own rechargables but I have found that most of them don't last more than 15 hours a session. The official battery and charger work great though and charge very quickly, you can also get the quick charge kit as well which will charge 2 batteries at once from any USB port.

Nice thanks for the help. Rechargeables to start then and i will get a lead later on.

I bought a PS3 after about a year long deliberation and decision making process.

My advice on what to get? Get the one you want and suits your needs, and fuck what anyone else says - man I am so fucking sick of teenage bl33ters saying "o rly lolz, well 360 has mre gamez and PWNS PS3!!!11one!" - I couldn't care less about the increased number of games for the 360 at this time, i've got enough good games to keep me going for a good while.

I bought a PS3 because:

1) Wireless networking out the box (seamless connection to my WMP11 playlists on the server); nice web browser meaning I don't need to touch the PC often.
2) Blu-ray playback (which is awesome quality) - this was the major one for me because a standalone player is £300, so I got a games console, a multimedia centre and blu-ray player for £300? Fucking bargain.
3) Sexy machine, very solidly made, piano black; way better build quality than the 360 - fits with HiFi seperates. My mate's 360 looked just plain daft with it's separate PSU block thing and the separate optical drive.
4) Practically silent operation, the 360 is a loud mofo and it's just not acceptable to me in my living room (has this changed though?).
5) XMB - it's just brilliant and slick.
6) PlayTV - twin freeview tuner turning it into a Freeview PVR. Fantastic.

I came close to the Elite, but I wanted blu-ray, so the PS3 was the only machine that met my requirements as a multimedia entertainment centre (not a games console).

If I wanted a games console, I'd have bought a Wii :).

I wouldn't get a PS3 is you don't have an HDTV, you need a 1080p device to enjoy what it's capable of.

Its not like every 360 breaks, it does have a high failure rate, much higher than the 3% thats expected from home electronic devices, but you would still be unlucky to get one that broke within the first year. And if you do it will get repaired or replaced pretty fast so its really no big deal. Ive had mine for a year in a few days (bought it 3 january 2007) and have had no trouble with it, and it has also doubled as dvd player and music cd player in addition to gaming machine, so it has been on for quite a few hours.
