This thread was an interesting read, I think I need to educate a few people.

Firstly I am not a Sony fan, my first Sony console was a PS3, I still have an XBOX and an XBOX360. I have around 60 games between all 3 consoles (along with my 30 odd PC games).

Now that is out of the way, remember when MS said that a HD larger than 20gb was not needed and that HDMI was a waste of time? Bet you don't.

Watch CES next week when it is anticipated that MS will announce ANOTHER SKU for the 360 range.

People often say the PS3 is so expensive but when you add all the shit in MS range to get to the same level as teh PS3 it works out cheaper.

Now, the only reason I own a PS3 was that 6 months prior to MS announcing the Elite they stated that HDMI would never appear on an XBOX360 so I bought one. They lied, they screwed me over. Fuck em. I am glad I bought a PS3, it is my home entertaintment system and I have finally removed my XBOX (read XBMC) and 360.

PS3 all the way. I do have to say though, with all of the hype about how superior it runs to most pcs (someone I met even said it ran 100 times more efficiently /sigh) I was shocked when I played pro evo on it to find that my PC runs much much better then the PS3 version and my PC cost me £300...the same as a PS3 give or take.

Better off running games which are compatible on both, on a pc instead as it runs much nicer and with 4USB slots (surely all modern computers have this?) you can buy the saitek gamepads which have the same controls as the PS3 anyway. The only thing it lacks is the analog back triggers but I'd say give it 6 months and they'll of bought out one of them if they haven't already.

The only games console I'd consider buying as well as my PC is a Wii as it's something different and doesn't pretend to be faster/better then it actually is. That said though, it's not an impossible task to write and run a background program which makes the Wii controller work as an emulated version on the PC. Am also willing to bet a more universal version of a PC-wiimote will be out at some point soon too.

Quite right...but a PC still makes either look like the young upstarts that they are :)

I dunno if the game dose but the po evo demo has some major bugs on the ps3 crashes it all the time. Made my self look like a chump hen i turned my 360 off and said but look how much better the PS3 is (for a laugh) only for the fucker to freeze 3 times in a row.

Should not have said that the xbox gremlins will bw out to tell you how you do not need any of that and how great xboxes are because they let you choose :p

Short term XBox, long term PS3.

Here's why:

1) XBox is for the most part very easy to programme, with excellent tools and a mostly sensible architecture (shame it doesn't have more embedded vram but you can't have everything).

2) PS3 is a strange architecture, with generally shit tools e.g. crap versions of gcc hamstrung by a retarded ABI, shit debugger etc...

The theoretical max performance of the PS3 is quite a bit higher than the 360 - BUT it's much harder to get there. So in 3 years or so we should some awesome PS3 titles which look a lot better than current ones and the XBox 360 ones will only be marginally better.

Indeed but you have to remember that most PC user's understand that they will upgrade on a yearly or bi yearly cycle. Console users' expect to have the same console for at least 4 or 5 years.

Don't get me wrong, I spend 2 grand every 2 years on my main PC (I have 3 in my house) but I refuse to have any PC in my lounge, so the next best thing that allows me to stream media, play games in true HD is the PS3, play SACD and ps2 games (I don't own a cheap 40gb version). That is why it sits under my TV and not the XBOXShit60.

As others have said previously, it depends on what you want to use your console for. If it is just a certain type of game then the 360 is worth getting, tho if you look at the releases penned for the ps3 this year I personally believe that the 360 is in for a rough time and that 2008 will see the ps3 gain in popularity quite sharply.

Many of my friends have now purchased PS3's and the trend keeps continue. Remember my bitterness toward MS is their constant lack of lying and the fact that they keep adding SKUs to the base unit in order to get it "right". The PS3 looks like it is "right" out of the box now and MS are back peddling like fuck.

I like ps3 and xbox 360 tbh they both have advantages and disadvantages. Your prob sounds like its with MS tho Deebs not so much the xbox itself. Both Sony and MS will screw us over backwards many times before we all move onto the next consoles, they will both lie and promise us the earth. Its stupid and sooks but thats way these stupid big companys are nowadays. You gotta remember it took 1 year for MS to bring out the 2nd sku the elite but it only took sony a few months? to bring out there revised version with 40g ect. Just look at all the variations of the ps2 and u can see Sony and MS both as bad when it comes to milking the cow. End of the day its best to forget the idiot companys and choose the console that offers you the most personally. My advise though would be get a x360 now while its dominant and then get a ps3 sometime this year as all the hot ps3 titles get released. If you not so bothered about games though and want a media entertainment system then the Ps3 is much better. this is all just my opinion though.

Last bit in bold because I agree with that the most.

That part as well.

I used to have a HTPC in an Ahanix case, so it looked like a HiFi seperate, but with a lack of any decent HTPC software (meedio and myHTPC were close but no cigar, and fuck XP MCE) it just didn't integrate well into the living room at all - the PS3 integrates into the HiFi stack nicely and discretely.

The XMB in 1080p is the sex. Superb blu-ray playback, media streaming and browsing is slick and intuitive. Also love the web browser.

I just can't fault it, but blow me over that cheap 40 gb comment  .... ;) (i have a 40Gb).

I can't disagree more with this. If you've followed the last few gameshows (e3 etc), you would realize that both MS and Sony are a bunch of fucking liars. It doesn't take much to see that Sony are just as bad really. It's a part of the hype.

I paid top whack for my PS3 60gb so in my eyes the 40gb version is cheap by comparision :) Still won't blow you tho.

Yes I understand they are as bad as one another, my comment is really that MS have to now keep adding expensive SKU's to bring the 360 up the the same level as the PS3 spec. The difference is I know that I don't have to spend anything on the PS3 to give me what I want, it was designed to be what it is from the get go, the 360 is turning into a BORG mess, amassing addons like it is gonna be fashionable. Sod that, I prefer the neat and tidy one box solution called the PS3.

I just find it ironic and funny that all the PS3 haters said why spend all that money on stuff you don't/won't ever use and then they are the first to buy all the new SKU's to bring their 360 to the same level and in the end costing them MORE money. Shame on them, bottom line, Sony got it right with the PS3, MS failed with the 360 and it is now showing.

Actually i disagree, sony got it wrong by not releasing a budget version of the console
Increase in sales since it release shows this

Microsoft got it right in the sense of releasing a cheap and expensive model rather than 1 piece of kit

Actually the increase in sales was due to everyone purchasing the 60gb SKU before it ran out, not the 40gb SKU. The momentum has carried over for the 40gb SKU.

Microsoft did not get it right in my opinion. To get the 360 to the same level as the PS3 requires more money than an out of the box PS3. Plus it has to be MS stuff, at least the PS3 allows YOU THE CONSUMER to choose your peripherals.

.
The 60gb sold more later because they slashed the prices to actually make it competative with the 360, if they released a budget version from launch they would have got more sales simply because people were saying it was too expensive
Now it is competatively priced against the 360, as if by magic they are selling

er.. thats argument has no logic whatsoever

You dont NEED any of the peripherals, you can play every game released bar the usuals like guitar hero with just a core console and a wired controller
Therefore by default YOU THE CONSUMER can choose what additional peripherals you want

In a ps3 you are given no choice at all, it is what it is

While i think a ps3 is a very good deal for what it is, it doesn't deviate from the fact that you have less choice not more

The 60gb version was still more expensive than the 40gb but still it sold like shit of a stick, I agree the price cuts do help and I think that the market penetration and word of mouth helps just a little. Just by demoing my unit 3 people decided to go get one for the multimedia capabilities it offers.

Yes you are given no choice with the ps3 but that is because of what it is, it is more than a games console and was designed with that in mind.

The 360 was designed AS a games console and nothing more, now MS realise that was a mistake hence the number of SKU's available to bring it to the same level as the PS3.

A £300 is not a gaming macine and will not last 5 years so not in the same league for casual games consol is cheapest and best option.

I know two people who got a ps because of the arse shafting that was Halo.

Consoles wont last 5 years either :) not for cutting edge gaming anyway. Its like the PS2, the last game i bought for it (discounting final fantasy) was 3 years ago at least.
