Ok so i have read the huge thread in the consoles section but i am still torn.

This is my situation.

I have no consoles at present so no back catalogue of games to worry about. I do not have an HDTV and won't for at least 3 or 4 years to be honest as i can't justify it to myself.

What i want to know is which of these consoles is best.

£279 for a premium xbox 360 with fifa and some shit game for kids and an extra wireless controller. Would need to shell out for the live gold sub.

£299 for a Playstation 3 with Pro Evo. No additional costs except maybe another controller but really not important as the wife will probably never touch it.

What do i do people?

Also never agree to let your missus buy a sofa, it don't stop there, apparently we need new curtains and cushions & to redecorate now!

For gaming, the Xbox. Since you don't plan to get a HD TV anytime soon, I wouldn't get the PS3.

The 360 sounds the better option for you, it looks like with the extra controller, games and Xbox Live (which is excellent and well worth it) you'll get the best out of it.

But if you just want a console to mess about with for a bit, get a Wii.

Whichever you pick you can't go wrong. Things have never been better when buying a console.

Xbox.

Anyone who says PS3 is most likely due to the fact that they already own one and want to justify the stupid amount of money they spent on it in the first place despite the fact that it's blatently losing. :p

For now Xbox, in a year it will be a harder choice to make.

The PS3 is a great machine and ill likely get one eventually, but id have to say go for the 360 - more (and better) games, better online gaming (although it costs extra, but it isnt expensive), better controler, and as i understand it the PS3 looks a bit shit on sd-tv's. Only thing PS3 really has going for it at this moment (may well change in the future though) is the fact it plays HD movies out of the box, is quieter and abit less prone to break.

i would only get a PS3. my mate got a xbox recently, there is hardly anything to tempt me into buying one.
reason i would get a PS3? personal reasons with me being a stubborn bastard, and also because of final fantasy.
dont really see the whole "xbox is cheap compared to ps" argument, its like what? £30 difference?

How about the 'PS3 has 4 good games and the 360 has close to 40' arguement?

FF13 likely wont be out until 2009, which is probably when ill get a PS3, there are no platform exclusive games before that to tempt me. Will probably be alil cheaper then as well. Also, the new Arcade version of the 360 is quite a bit cheaper than the 40gig PS3 and it is really all you need if you dont want to download demoes and arcade games (it doesnt have a HDD but comes with a decent size memory card for saves and such). Then you can add on the 120gig HDD later if you feel like it etc.

My nephew just recently bought a PS3 and tbh i dont know why as there isnt many games to buy for it as far as i can see. We have watched more movies on it then played games tbh.

I think though that a lot of people that owned a PS2 will probably eventually buy the PS3, once they fix the number of games available as the DVD player is awesome.

Yes the picture quality of PS3 is quite a bit poorer than 360 even after Sony fixed some of the filtering issues. A friend runs his on a 32inch Beco TV because he is a cheapskate and at times it looks piss poor. I won't lie to you and say the 360 looks amazing at SD either but it does look clean and light years ahead of the Wii visually at the same resolution.

Well for me most games of any of note (excluding GT5, FF13 and MGS4) coming out on either are also coming out on the PC eventually, though as with Gears of War look much better and are longer, for expandable and have far better multiplayer options. I came very near to being tempted into the PS3 with Haze but then found out its coming to PC too.
Obviously you need a pretty swanky PC to run them on, I had my two year upgrade a few months ago and it runs anything you chuck at it at full spec with the scope to whack another graphics card in to run SLI in a years time. If you can't afford the latest PC then a console is a good road to go down, both are relatively cheap compared to a PC £250ish for Xbox, £300ish for PS3 £600-£800 for a top end PC.
For me though I just can't play FPS games with a pad, no matter what anyone says you can't match keyboard/mouse.

I am tempted by a Wii for post pub fun but its pretty limited, only a handful of games that are worth getting.

u cant :p if u want it cheap build it yourself or prepare to pay and extra 500-600 for pc world doing the work for ya

i paid £600 for mine about 8 months ago and it still runs any game i chuck at it with no problem, probly get the same stuff ive got for around 350-450 now so really not hard to get yourself a decent pc on the cheap, imo best sites are e-buyer and overclockers

or get a shit pre packaged one and just get some more ram and better grpx card maybe?

also agree that fps on consol is useless, cant stand games like HALO 3 ect jsut cant get to grips with shitty analoge stick after playing CS ect for best part of 6 years

Without being able to take advantage of HD its hard to say PS3 unless like me you hate the 360 pad ;) With a standard TV i think you should get a PS2 cheap as anything biggest game catalogue going.

Only an idiot would buy a premade one, they are so easy to put together :) You just can't put them together wrong the parts only fit in one way.

Its always a good start to pick your processor/motherboard and work from there, it will list what sort of ram to put in on the specs.

Processor
Motherboard
Ram
Graphics Card
Power supply
Hard drive
DVD drive
Case
Sound card (optional)

Done

As Gohan said, take a look at Ebuyer, "build" your PC there, they have the biggest range of kit but not the cheapest so shop around.

Not the best in the world but none to shabby at all, drop the monitor, mouse keyboard etc if they arent needed and its even cheaper. This is the system I am suggesting to my tight arse mate so he can play CoD4 (he nearly wet his pants playing it on my PC) Obviously for a few more quid you could get a far better graphics card and such

Buy AMD, they are having a hard time :( <-- link in the smiley - nice way to hide pr0n links also? xD

Oh, and that setup is far superior in hardware to any of the consoles anyways :D

Ok but is a PS3 playable on and sd tv? I'm sure it does look piss poor compared to on an HDTV but i presume it looks better than the PS2 does on an sd? Also i really like the idea of the web browser on the ps3, does the xbox 360 have or plan to have a web browser? Also PS3 is wireless already which is a big turn on for me.

If the xbox 360 has a web browser that may well be enough to sway me to microsoft.

The real issue though is if the ps3 is playable on an sdtv.

Yes its playable and useable on a normal tv my cousin has had one on his 14" tv in his bed room for a year. It dose not look great but it dose not look worse than a ps2. It is just a lot of money for a device you will not get the most out of.

£600 for a OK PC today but a consol lasts 5 years will the £600 pc today be able to run a brand new game in 5 years at full spec. IE could a 5 year old mid range PC play Crisis at full spec today? Not a chance PC gaming is great but its not cheap you have to change components every year to keep up.

Probably not, but then PS3 games will look shit stood next to a PC game in 5 years time, hell they will look pretty average compared to one in a years time.

My PC plays Crysis just fine, you could probably build it for £500ish today.

Sure consoles are nice for a year or two every five but for cutting edge games there is no option but to get a PC (if you can afford to ofc)

There are obvious perks to console gaming, with the PC games are often released to early and patched later which is a pain and a standard platform to work on for developers but there is so much more you can do with a PC, new video format? no problem, DL a new codec. With the consoles you have to wait for Sony or Microsoft to mess about with new firmware. As an all round media centre the PC beats anything hands down, as a games machine it easily matches the consoles today and is fully expandable.

PC gaming does cost a lot but then (imo) its worth it. Not to mention having to pay out £700 odd for a decent TV, ours is doing just fine, nice big CRT wide screen.

Housemate just bought a PS3 and spent the entire weekend so far playing Assasins creed.

Looks awesome for the games i've played so far and the movies, but then i'm using it on a HDTV. I've got the feeling that if I had been looking at an SD picture i'd of been much less impressed with it.

No idea about an x-box but if you've not got loads of gaming mates and are married then a wii could actually be decent since you could probably talk your missus into playing with you more easily!

Ignore the fanboi'ism that will no doubt invade this thread (in fact it already has ><)
Simply look at what exclusives YOU want to play the most
For example if you are really into realistic racing games then a ps3 is probably better for you, GT5 blows everyting out of the water if prologue is anything to go by (more options on steering wheels, pedals and other peripherals, the game is more realistic) however if you are into arcade racing games the Xbox is probably for you as PGR4 and Forza (i didnt like this one personally, much preferred pgr) are very good in that respect

PS3:
Resistance
Metal Gear Solid 4
Devil May Cry 4
Tekken 6
Virtua Fighter 5
Heavenly Sword
Motorstorm
White Knight Story
SOCOM PS3 (coming to pc?)
Warhawk
Lair
Ferrarri F1
Ratchet and Clank
8 Days
Final Fantasy XIII (next year)
Gran Turismo Prologue
Little big planet

Xbox:
Gears of War
Dead Rising
Saints Row
Halo 3 (if you play online, otherwise an average single player campaign)
Mass Effect (maybe on PC)
Forza 2
Bioshock (also on PC)
Lost Planet (also on pc?)
Alan Wake (also on PC)
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
Crackdown
Huxley (also on PC)
Too Human
Project Sylpheed
Banjo Kazooie 3
Eternal Sonata
Infinite Undiscovery
Splinter Cell 5
Project Gotham Racing 4
Kane And Lynch
