So, I've got my PS2 out of the cupboard to mess around on a few old games lately. Since I got my PS3 tho I got a HDTV and naturally the PS2 picture looks blurry while playing games... and since HDMI isn't available on my PS2 like it is on my PS3 I was wondering if the component cables actually help?

I've read around online and people point towards "component cables" they look no different than the scart cable I have presently tho apart from the 3 seperate plugs, is there actually any difference quality/picture wise on a HDTV with them? or is it no different than a scart cable?

Fat rep reward for best reply :p this blurry picture is annoying me.

Yes, it will give you a sharper picture, with better colours and let you use progressive scan.

on some pal gams to invoke 480p you gotta press the triangle button after you boot up. you can run gt4 1080i if you get the yank version and get god of war 2 usa version it has a hi rez mode that just looks the nuts hold down L1 + L2 + L3 + Square + Circle when it loads up

Ah nm, very stupidly just realised that my HDTV in the bedroom doesn't have 5 female connectors there for I can only get it in black and white as theres no ports for the 2x colour leads :< shambles! will have to put it on the tv in the living room instead.

Urm... not sure what's going on there but component is only 3 leads. If you have 5, chances are two of them are L+R audio, that has nothing to do with the component signal though. Make sure you're not trying to plug it in to the composite socket - similar plug, but not the same type.

IF you are missing one of the component connections then the colour should be either very red/green/blue but not black and white. Are there output settings on the ps2 itself? Or a setting you are missing on your tv?

Unknown, I've set the PS2 to component mode Y etc etc (not RGB) so thats fine, as for the TV i've made sure colour isn't lowest and that all settings that would have impact on the colour were correct... still nowt :/ i'll try it on my TV in the sitting room in abit, hopefully bedroom tv isn't faulty.

Don't think my PS2 model has progressive scan mode either, its the older/fat model, read somewhere only the newer more recent models had it. Nothing happens when I hold Triangle + X on boot up.

as for whats plugged in i've got

Green - Video in
Red - L Audio
White R Audio

Hmm, that's not right at all then - if your tv has component input you should have 3 connections: a red, blue and green all next to each other. Sounds like you might be going in through the composite port.

Yeah, sounds like your TV doesn't have component. You're plugging in to composite (that's what the yellow socket is) which is basically the pretty much the lowest quality connection you can get.
