Remember that your DAOC account is costing you money, treat your login details as you would any other financial system, imagine your details are like the PIN number on your credit card.
  • Do not store your password it in a file on your desktop
  • NOBODY (not even GoA) will ask for your password so never tell it to anyone
  • Don't share/trade your account, not even with a friend
  • Use a secure email account like the one from your ISP
  • If you must use web based email then configure a complex password reminder, eg for "What is my favourite colour" answer something like "redandyellowwithpinkspots"

Keeping your password safe is only the first step, you should also consider protecting your home computer, free products exist to help with this.
  • Run Windows Update frequently to keep your computer patched up.
  • Make sure you have a firewall installed such as Zone Alarm
  • Install anti-virus software and keep it updated. GRI Soft offer a free product

Finally, if you really must use IRC or an instant messenger system remember that these provide information about you, your computer and your connection to the internet all of which assist a malicious user in gaining access to your system.
  • If you really must use IRC take time to check your hostname is blocked (on quakenet run the command //mode $me +x)
  • Be cautious of who you accept as a buddy on your instant messenger client
  • NEVER accept files or click on links sent over IRC/MSN
