Protect the Innocent?

If you apply your way of thinking to the extreme, why have motorway police or speed cameras? We all know we should stay within the speed limit, not drink and drive etc, but if there was no enforecment there, lives would be lost in greater numbers than they are today.

Having motorway police, and speed cameras is fine. Censorship, if applied to your example, would mean that we weren't allowed to drive on the motorway in the first place...just in case we drove too fast.

However, I do take your point. It's another of those questions where there is no clear answer just, hopefully, the best compromise.

and some complete numb-nuts have screwed it up, forcing the law to get involved... now we're all gonna get policed, whether we like it or not...

There always have been numbnuts, and there always will be numbnuts...especially on the internet, which is the world's biggest numbnut magnet!

Moving on - child pr0n is 'sick' yes. It's illegal, yes. Does it mean we should police the net? In my opinion, no. People will always have their own little diversities and foibles (and if you think I'm 'belittling' child porn, remember things are only 'sick' if society as a whole doesn't agree with them, eg cannabalism was perfectly acceptable amongst many societies for a fair amount of time), and people will always find a way to express or get off on them. Policing the net would not have stopped this occurring, because by the very nature of what these people were involved in (ie it is morally, legally and socially condemned), it is kept secret regardless. Hence, anything that is sufficiently abhorrent to cause a major calling for such a restriction would be unaffected by the restriction anyway.

And finally, Metallica are pants :)

This is what is called a 'permissive opinion'. People like you are the reason that there is so much porn on the net and kids are selling it and drugs around schools etc. It's because they just stand back and say 'times are changing and there aint nothing we can do about it'. Now hang on a moment. Let me give you a little quotation I found: "The only thing required for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing". Are you a good man? You decide. Are you complaining you can't do anything? I THINK SO! If the answer to both of these questions is yes, then it is partly YOUR fault.

Certainly not. We are hypocritical if we condemn and do not act. This guy is not acting, and trying to squirm out of admitting to his condemnation of it by not actually saying anything at all. By the way, if you get sent a link to a porn site, who do you tell who can get rid of it?

Stu I've read about many cases that cause me great concern in our current judicial and some of the rules passed etc, and not from the SUN.

You have to remember that the primary reason for the press is not to tell you the truth. It's not to show you what's happening, it's not to give you news. The primary reason for the press is to sell newspapers, and that's all there is to it. Always keep that in mind when you see any evidence of sensationalism, and you'll be well on your way to understanding what's REALLY going on.

Well done mungo. You just said exactly what was said by Stu a few posts earlier. Skills.

Child porn is wrong. Speed cameras are worse imo tho. They stop me from doing speeds which are more than safe to drive at. Bastards.

hehe, I wondered where his sudden burst of intellectuality came from :D

And Speed Cameras are a con. They go off all the time in traffic-jams around here.

Oops... didn't see that one...
Anyway, I quite agree with the rest of it. There are two reasons for speed cameras:
a) the government want more income and
b) bureaucracy lives on petty details. Without it, you wouldn't have the paper-pushers.
