Pricing Immigrants into Illegality

My wife, she's American, just found out yesterday that the UK Home Office has raised the cost of applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (the right to live permanently in the UK) from £335 to £750 for an application by post, and from £550 to £950 for an in-person application.

I think this is a hell of a lot of money for a lot of people, surely it will force more immigrants (especially the ones already here who've just had this dumped on them) to live here illegally because they can't afford to pay that much money?

Have the charges for applying for citizenship gone up as well ?

The current situation means (I'm not British) that the UK is becoming the United Kingdom of Islamandiafricazistanstein.

They can raise it to whatever they want in my opinion, it's their country.

So if I wanted to move and live in Switzerland (loved the place when I was there) and couldn't do so as I couldn't afford to live there does it make it the Swiss government's/home office's/their version's fault?

Fair enough perhaps for those that don't live here already. But to me this a a bit much for people who've been here for 2 years already, which is how long you have to be here before you need to do this, and are legally working with permits and everything above board to be suddenly hit with a bill for like a whole month's wages or more.

We're lucky enough to be able to afford it, but I think this will cause a lot of problems for a lot of people.

hehe thats exactly the same for anyone doing anything in this country. You pay = you lose.

I know quite a few immigrants who were working (mainly builders), they were given permission to work, paid taxes, and rented their own accomadation. They did not receive a benefit of any kind. These are the guys the country deports, honest hard working people who take less advantage of the system than most "British" citizens.

I'd rather they be given permission to stay and every fucker who scrounged of the dole or had kids for benefits, or screwed the system in anyway to be deported. Prefrebly to go serve as a police officer in iraq.

I think the latest price change was this week. Also your wife must have missed the test you have to do now, which costs £35, before you can apply for the permanent visa - though it's the same test she'll have to take for citizenship anyway. I'm not sure if you have to pay for that as well, you do have to get a doctor or solicitor or similar to verify they've known you for three years though I think.

I thought if you married someone you get granted citizenship? Or have they changed that due to Marriages for places (as it were?).

No, you can't automatically be able to live here just by being married. You have to get a visa first, a fiance's visa, then get married - then you get a leave to stay visa that last for two years, then you have to prove you've been together for the two years with lots of documentation, household bills etc with both your names on.

Then after two years you have to take a test, pay 800 quid and apply for a permanent resident's visa... up until this time you're not allowed any government assistance (unless you're an assylum seeker, which none of this applies to)

Then after that, a few more years later, you can apply for citezinship if you want to.

P.S. I think it's a bit easier if you come from the EU to come and work.

So, you could have been here for 3 years already, if you came as a student or worker say before you met your partner, before you get hit with this £800 bill to stay forever.

This is all fine and well if you knew all along you were going to have to pay it, but the government has just plucked the fee out of thin air this week. So, like my wife for instance who has to do this part next month, loads of people have to suddenly come up with the best part of a grand, get out of our country or live here illegally.

Ironically, I think the money the government is charging for the permanent resident's visa is to cover the cost of asylem seeker paperwork and related administration.

I believe it's about £20,000 to live in Australia, but you get £10,000 back after x years (>= 10 years)
