Didn't Dell offer a "downgrade" to XP? You will have to check with them and the deal may have been removed by now.
You may have to buy XP if you can, or if you can't you can always get it "from the usual places" and install it on the machine.
Though to be honest vista is so stable now there are no problems with it. Everyone has to move on at some point

You're missing my point, he should avoid vista himself but put vista on his parents machine as that bitching will make them less likely to break it.You can turn all that off not be asked any more questions...so its not a big deal really
