Pope's comments on Islam, what do you think?

If I would speak from the western-christinan POV, I´d say that the people who´re not raising their voices for a war against the pope and demand that the cross needs to fall in Rome are exactly the people that this passage in the text fropm Khoury was refering to. They´re a prime example of why this text even exists. And even after a rather moderate interpretation by the pope, they´re too thick to understand it and just freak out after hearing a sentence that contains "mohammes" in a remotely negative connotation.

I think when ppl say stuff about Christianity, Christians just shrug.

I think when anyone says anything about Islam it's suddenly HORRIBLE and disrespectful.

The fact is that if you believe in Islam then you think the Christians are dead wrong. If you're a Christian you think Islam has it all wrong. Why do people have to pretend to respect other religions when the first tennet of most organised religion is "we're right, everyone else is wrong" (ie...there is only one god, the father almighty, maker of heaven and earth). I will never understand this PC bs of pretending to respect each other. Christians think Muslims are going to hell and vice versa, why pretend???

Both religions have histories of violence, so I don't get why the pope is going there. I guess he knew exactly what the reaction would be and said this stuff on purpose to get a reaction and get ppl talking about religion instead of talking about football or pop music...

I kinda agree with Thorwyn in that the Muslim world hasnt exactly proved the Pope wrong in their response. Not only was the Pope misunderstood, we now have the usual burning of flags and death threats we had with the cartoons. The thing is, most of the Islamic world has such a different culture than what we have - I dont think theres anyway anyone can expect them to react to scrutiny or comment without a whole load of shouting backed up with firearms.

If it were against Christians or any other mainstream faith, its hard to believe there would be such uproar. But thats probably cos we are all used to it by now, it doesnt really bother them. Theres nothing wrong with having respect for the person who believes in something different from you, but remember the objective of Christianity and Islam is to spread what they believe, and you wont get far if you dont have respect for everyone

In the context of his whole speech he was correct. Unfortunately small minded people use a small part of it, taken out of context, to yet again whip up anger amongst the largely illiterate masses. I wondered how many of those people in Pakistan burning effigies of the Pope actually read the whole speech. Or did they just go to Friday Prayer and get told what to think and do by the Clerics. I suspect the later.

Like you though, I just don't get why the Catholic Church, given its painful history of violence towards other religions, is lecturing on the subject. Maybe they should look at their own history first and admit the mistakes of the past. Two Crusades, The Inquisitions and the wiping out of the Cathar's in France is just the tip of the ice berg.

Just had the most bizarre converstaion with an educated Saudi national here in Dubai who thinks that George Bush will now assasinate the Pope in order to start a Christian v Muslim World War III.

In essence all he was trying to get accross was that violence has no part in religion. Badly put and misguided maybe but he does have a point. Also the forced indoctrination in some countries, Iran for one, is not right. Regardless of what we may think about religion/Christianity you generally not forced to practice it.

He was a fool for the basic reason that anyone who says anything about Islam these days seems to end up on some nutters hit list and usually incites riots/protests somewhere.

maybe it was just me but back in primary school it was pretty much forced. morning prayers, having to learn that give us our daily bread crap and singing hymns.

i dont think many realised you didnt have to but the teachers didnt make it obvious. one day i realised i didnt believe any of it and stopped, the teachers didnt say anything. but sure as hell didnt tell everyone either.

I just find it funny, I got no clue what the Pope said (and don't care about it) but seeing those Christians do what they are good at taking a piece of text and twist and turn it around so it fits their story put a smile on my face when I saw it on the TV.

There was an interesting comment I heard on the radio from a Moslem community leader who said that the Moslem community (or elements of it) need to stop being so sensitive. He basically agreed with the Vatican that the Pope's comments were taken out of context. Fair comment if you ask me.

Because the Christian West is essentially secular in this day and age and have no problems starting wars based on political ideology or even for greed/oil.

If you are ever blown to bits by an explosion, I don't think you will take any consolation in knowing that your killer did it for a political rather than religious motive.

We may have "evolved" past our previous habits of starting wars based on religion or even justifying colonisation and slavery based on spreading "the good word" we just use different motives in this day and age.
