If any experienced LIVE players could help me out with this one as its annoying me.

I am interested in a hand I played last night at a live tournament.

I had A 9 Off to start and I was on the button, I called the blind and the small blind next to me called the blind also, there was no raise from BB.

Flop comes

9h 3s 4h

Flopped top pair with top kicker, Original small blind bets 600 (3x bb i think) and rest of the table folds. Now the player was what I thought at the time an average player, I looked for some tells and all his tells from previous info I had gathered showed weakness (I was right) So I re-raised to 1200 expecting to see him off and not putting him on the draw (As I would expect him to check)

He called and the turn came:

3(h)

At this point I put him on something like J 9..he went all in.

I took a while to call and my reasoning was such:

No raise on the first round of betting ruled out Pocket 10+'s (IMO for this player) plus, the bet on the flop in my opinion meant he was not on a draw. Now I thought with the low flop he could be playing something like pocket 6's hoping I didn't hit a 9 or was on a draw (Although a re-raise would be a stupid move on my part).

Anyway I was putting him on j9 or mid pocket pair.

I called.

He turns over K 3 off and has trips.. I have a nut flush draw but the river doesn't bring me any joy.

I would have never in a million years put him on a 3, if someone re-raised my bottom pair I would expect to fold it.

Did I do something wrong or did I just get fished?

P.s also when I asked him if he thought I had nothing, he said " I thought you had something but I had 3's with an ok kicker...)

Sounds like a poor player who got lucky. I wouldn't have bet so agressively myself, I would probably have read him as trapping with an overpair if he was an experienced player.

4 players in the pot when it got to him with someone to act behind, would have been bad play to slow play an overpair.

However it seems like he was intent on making bad plays so maybe :p

Ah, I wasn't sure how many players were in it.

Ah, have you edited? I missed some of your post. Your reasoning was fine, you just can't read as much into poorer players. They are more likely to hang on for lucky draws, especially (as this sounds) if it isn't for cash.

To be honest reading that, right at the end when you said he went all in my thoughts instantly went to a paranoid "he must have trips".

I doubt my judgement is perfect and you played fine based on the information available, that was just a feeling I got from reading what happened.

Inexperienced and got lucky, a good player wouldn't have called after your raised with the lowest pair on the table. The fact he went all in was telling as well, it wasn't the cleverest play as very people would call that, IMO a good player would have put a smaller bet as he knew he almost certainly had the strongest hand. I suspect he would have shown his trips after you folded anyway :)

Well, the first round was a cheap call for a small blind(with a K3 it was cheap odds).

He might have thought you had high cards, AJ, KQ, KJ or something. Like he said "thought you had something". And as he has one K, it eliminates that one K from your hand.

Now, he bets 600, thinking you got nothing on the flop.

You bet 600 more. That's only 600 more when he allready has 800 in(don't know how much he had left, but if he had over 50% of his chips in, it would legitimate it even further), and had plenty of outs EVEN if you have the top pair. And since you only called pre-flop, there's no real chance of a big pair.

When the other three hit, well, i wouldn't have called the guy with a pair of 9's, but that's ofcourse dependant on many things. You should've betted more agressively on the flop, maybe even all in the guy, but again that's dependant on the situation.

The one thing is that it's tournament poker, and sometimes you do have to take a chance and hope you got someone beat. And if you don't, with those outs he still had plenty.

Ofcourse he can be just a poor player, can be counting the odds(like i do most the time with chips in etc), or could be reading you wrogn and betting due to that. Even the pro's read people wrong, bet, call and then get lucky.
¨
EDIT: Also there's the possibility he called to steal the pot later, thinking you had a weak pair or a draw. *shrug*

I hate the way you played this hand but I dont want to come off as a twat, I'd really prefered you'd posted this hand from his perspective rather than yours.

Given stacksizes over 5k I like the way he played it, under and not so much.

From the way you played the hand ( which you shouldnt have been in - unless you were raising Preflop ), it was fairly glaring you were on a pair of nines or two overcards.

Think about why he can eliminate 99 from your range preflop and why he can eliminate 33/44 when you reraise him on the flop, I know the game is tough but you absolutely have to develop your critical thinking here.

There is no hope for you if you put these kind of hands down to bad luck/bad player all the time.

Chances of hitting all those hands at once are 6 zillion to one. And like the worlds most obvious tell for a supposed good poker player lal! just a load of bollocks.

As for ECA, I get your points, I wanted him to know he was beaten, so he should of laid he hand down knowing it. I should have reraised a lot higher..im sorry but if you know some ones on a top pair and you're on a bottom pair why would you continue to play facing a raise when you have the weakest hand.

MY mistake I have worked out was not re-raising enough to get him to fuck off the pot..something that wont be happening again, and although I would like to play your style of poker (Hyper aggressive by the sounds of it) I wouldn't raise with a ace 9 off with 2 players to act behind me and one already in the game ( Although I had posistion so its not unreasonable to play like that)... ace 10 suited..yeah ace with a weak kicker and off suit..no thanks i'll save my chips for something else.

I'm not hyper-aggressive, I wouldnt have been in the hand preflop, but if you do want to play these hands you need to raise PF or you're going to go broke in situations like these.

If the opponent in this hand was a thinking player then he played it well, imo, whether you agree or disagree isnt relevant, what is most important is that when hands like this occur you really think about what your bets represented from his perspective and vice versa - thats the key to the game.

I play a lot live, so use my advice as you see fit :)

I had A 9 Off to start and I was on the button, I called the blind and the small blind next to me called the blind also, there was no raise from BB.

Your first, and biggest mistake was right here. You are on the button with a semi-good Ace and only the SB & BB left. Raise and take down the pot there and then, failing that it stops 95% of people with hands like K3 calling.

<snip>

{he} bets 600 ... {he} showed weakness (I was right) so I re-raised to 1200.

Great, so you make a good read but then fail to bet correctly. The raise was too small. If he has any part of this flop, epesically if he's betting a flush draw the min raise will not make them lay it down (pot odds justify the call). Make a pot size (2400) raise here and K3 will have to fold.

<snip>

At this point I put him on something like J 9..he went all in.

<snip>

Well without a good tell on the person I would have major warning signs going off now. He has gone all-in with a pair on the board, a possible flush showing and you raised him on the flop. Unless its a bluff what can you beat with top pair, top kicker? At best its a split pot.

Depends on how costly his move was in terms of his total chip stack and level of cash the tourney wash played at - lower end especially you get lots of crazy irregular play and even at some of the more expensive games I have played I have seen some crazy calls - depends then on their bankroll - if they are playing for fun its a pain in the arse :(
