the primary OS is going to be a unix flavour (naturally :)), but I'm going to pollute my system with either w2k/pro or wXP/pro to play some of the games I have that don't run on unix.
I've rediscovered my hatred of XP, so odds are it's either 2000 or no w32 at all.

as to the speakers, I have my trusty labtec 2.1 set that I'd had for ages. I'm thinking of upgrading it to something like this perhaps...but only thinking atm :)

I like XP, for all its faults :D As for speakers, I believe there are quite a few cheap 5.1 (and 6.1/7.1) setups now available, so, depending on your PC location, I'd think they'd be quite a good investment now you have a cool integrated soundcard :D (Or splash out around £400 on these insane Sony headphones).

Kind Regards

those headphones look pretty cool tbh :)

there is _no_ way I'm going to get a thx cert speaker set for my computer! why? well, if 90% of the games out there handled positional audio properly...then maybe, but as I watch dvd's on my hifi/telly there is no need. I may get a 4.1 setup in the future though :)

Indeed, most games don't really show off the true potential of surround sound. However, DOOM III will. And Deus Ex II even has a dynamic audio system (i.e. it creates sounds on the fly to suit situation x, instead of just playing pre-recorded sound files, which is a very big progression).

But I agree, you have to be seriously into audio to justify spending so much (but you're half way there thanks to nVidia :)).

Kind Regards
