In my ongoing supposed quest to become nothing more than a grauniad reposter:

Tragic, I've done my best to remove as much plastic from my diet as possible. We may well get one of these, eventually:

I know not "plastics" exactly - however PFAS are found in lots of plastics, so...

This:

An innocent-looking strawberry could have PFAS exposure, I learned, because the chemicals can be added to pesticides "to help them stick better to the fruit, so when it rains it doesn't wash off

What is government actually doing?

This is what government is for. Protecting our health. The health of our children. Making sure we're not so fucking stupid that we totally fuck the environment. And none of our governments are doing any of it. They're tinkering and doing absolutely irrelevant stuff (ID cards ffs!) when they should be sorting out how we can produce food safely, how we can wear clothes safely. How we can trust anything we buy.

No government, of any flavour, is doing anything

At this rate when you buy ready meals you may as well just eat the plastic tray as well. At high temperature it will melt and add flavour/texture to the meal. Guess it will save on recycling though it might introduce lots more fat people as we won't be able to shit the plastic out.

And then you burn to death.

To be honest I can't even begin to keep up with all this anymore; everything in my house is probably killing me, but even when things are supposed to be less toxic I'm doubtful; stuff like paint is supposed to be safer and less toxic now, but it's also massively less resilient so you have to paint far more often; so is it any better in the long run? No idea, and not being an industrial chemist, I'm just not going to worry about it.

I'm not sure we are as likely to catch fire to our furniture as we once were, when more people smoked. It is also about the move away from some of the older chemical retardants that exist.

We're in the process of obtaining new everything for the house and I'm all over this.

The last mattress was delivered xmas eve - they're all wool with no flame or insect retardent chemicals. Dense wool weaves don't burn.

We're still on camping furniture, so that's next. But we won't rush. However, again - wool based. No chemicals. Much easier to obtain in Europe because we didn't update our "no bad chemicals" laws since brexit - but you can get stuff. It's just more expensive and much more limited.

Bedding/clothing/everything is natural fibers only. Actively throwing away some stuff and for clothing we obtain new stuff at the best possible levels. Some is hard - e.g. raincoats. But paragonia (and others) are pressing on with coats with PFAS/PTFE-free DWR's.

Kitchenware was changed ages ago. All the plastic got thrown out (including all the tupperware, which I replaced with glass). No non-stick - so we've cast iron, carbon steel and stainless steel only - all appropriately seasoned so you can still cook eggs without making cement. Wooden-spoons and scrapers o-matic.

Ecover for our cleaning chemicals (we have a septic tank). I also stopped using any soaps, shampoos or body washes years sgo (except on hands) - and my skin got way better - I've had skin problems all my life and they cleared up within 12 months. Also no deodorants or anti perspirants - and I smell much better too. I also often wash lightly-soiled clothes on a chem-free rinse-cycle and it works just as good.

No fucking scented candles. Women are suckers for this shit but all those smelly things make for awful air quality.

Got rid of the open coal fire. Used to love the smell of that. Round here at winter you can see the air in the valleys, but we're at 600 feet.

Got a log burner though. An above-EU air quality law compliant one, mind. But you'll have to pry fire from my cold dead hands.

The question is - do I feel any better? And honestly the answer is no. Until, that is, I go to towns or cities and then I can smell them - and they fucking stink. I have to get out after a couple of days or I start feeling generally rotten. I think that's pretty much how I felt all the time and didn't notice. So I'll never live in a city again.

My sister's coming in a few days. She'll undoubtedly have bought the o/h something that "smells nice". It'll go straight in the bin when she leaves.

Ran out of edit time :)

All our bedding is cotton or wool. Moved to wool duvets a few years ago. They're not as comfy as goose-down to "wrap around" but they're way better at temperature regulation and sweat-free sleeping. (Synthetics, of course have all gone in the bin).

Apparently wool's much better at resisting all the nasties too (e.g. dust mites etc). But then the risks associated with them are overblown by an industry that wants you to re-buy stuff all the time.

Last time I went abroad was 2019, when I had two weeks camping in France ;)
