I have a3d software enabled.. but to me, its just the same as not having it enabled (I dont notice any advantage/disadvantages), maybe its my headphones, but i doubt that.

Spotting is like a wallhack id think, because you know where everyone is cept you cant get caught by cheat software

Points taken, but it's impossible to prove. Therefore should not be a ban. In a clan match RW (or similar) is often used, guy dies, can't follow the enemy because of server setttings (good), but can stay put, and if an enemy runs past call it. Another one, guy left alive, you go spectator on him, he stands/crouches close to a clipping area, sometimes you can see through the walls for him.

I've got a fairly decent sound setup, I use EAX (never tried A3D), and this allows me to gauge direction and distance, I also use radar so I know if he's enemy. Additionally I've been playing so long that I "know" all the sounds. So if a ladder is used or a guy jumps from a height, runs on a particular surface etc I know exactly where he is. Other peeps use crappy speakers or headphones, I have the advantage, and sometimes get called cheat because I knew where someone was. That make me a cheat? No.

LAN spotting will always happen as will RW spotting when two m8s are on the same public. Nothing can be done about it, doesn't bother me, shouldn't bother anyone else.

This seems very minor stuff. Someone downloading the latest Aimbot deserves everything they've got coming, but for publics this RW / Lan / A3d seems trivial.

I suppose it's bit like the police locking away people who drop litter instead of locking away the murderers of the world. You end up with people locked away but the real problem goes unpunished.

The A3D bug I refer to only works with certain hardware, namely soundcards that support A3D 2.0 (SBLive's etc. support A3D 1.0). Only with hardware A3D 2.0 can you achieve the advantage, setting s_a3d 1 on a live will have no effect.

As for what you said at the end Yuck "LAN spotting will always happen as will RW spotting when two m8s are on the same public. Nothing can be done about it, doesn't bother me, shouldn't bother anyone else."

It would bother you if two people were completely owning you due to spotting, and it does bother other people who have short tempers even more? :)

Its not impossible to proove, but its extremely hard, and requires stacks of demos as evidence. Even then its hard to judge, but thats allready obvious ;)

SG you are also right that spotting is similar to a wallhack but its not as effective, spotting has a greater distance (like a3d), yet you dont have to rely on the explanations of another to work out when someone will pop out (unlike with a wallhack/a3d).

With a3d you hear the sounds, you can judge the distance, you can judge when they pop out, where they are going on the map from a huge distance away, in a clan game you could call the other teams rush from your own spawn almost, which means you can send most of your team to defend the specific choke point instead of having a spread, which is more of an advantage than a wallhack could ever give.

A3D 2.0 sound is perhaps the worst cheat available nowadays, its not detectable, it is preventable (small edit of HLGuard will stop it), it gives a huge advantage to any good player. Anyone who denies it gives a huge advantage should try playing against someone good with a3d 2.0, when they only have eax. The outcome is obvious.

A3D 2.0 doesnt help your aim, but it decreases your reaction time, it gives you more info than you should be allowed, and it can turn the tide of a game more dramatically than the other team having 2 players drop :p

I am in the process of getting hold of an A3D 2.0 soundcard to proove this point to those who disagree, when I have one I will do some tests and produce a full report on the advantages it gives, and to what degree. But it is quite obvious what would happen.

The sooner valve stop A3D 2.0 the sooner another nasty cheat is dead ;)

a better system would be to adjust the volume/audibility of sounds, depending upon the environment, corners etc. I suspect that wouldn't be possible with the current mapping parameters.

For instance, a 6ft thick wall wouldn't allow footsteps to be heard, and any explosions/gunfire would be extremely muted, and muffled.

Spotting sucks :/

Vertigo could certainly do with Toms idea but you are prolly right it can't be done for CS.

Bah, i seen "Spotting" for the first time in a while just :/

First the 2 (Who where in the 5thElement Clan - I remember some of their members gettin caught cheating on here)

Anyway, we got suspicious on the pair knowing exactly where the enemy was on Assault - For instance Enemy jumps into Vents and the guy gets a scout and fires exactly where he was..

So we all pulled these up, and they finally admitted to LAN Spotting ,they claimed it wasnt cheating and continued doing it... but they musta got bored after our threats coz they stopped

Pisses ya off tho when they are waiting for you to drop outta the Vent, and he come top at the end :/

hehe just use cameras on assault :p

as for toms post, nice idea, but it wont happen with this engine, so we have to work out fixes for the problems we have now via other means, HLGuard can be used to stop A3D, forcechasecam on publics can stop spotting via lan/comms. There is even a default config enforcer plugin which locks all cvar commands to default (bar controls and stuff like that), its a very nice plugin and youd be amazed at the clans that play utterly shit due to having to use a default config, something which I always use ;)

Combatting the new ways of cheating isnt hard, just requires a small amount of effort. Trouble is many people view these things in different ways, those who use a3d 2.0 obviously claim no advantage and that its fine, as do those who use comms on publics. We need to stop the bias and just make CS as level a playing field as we can possibly make it. It would be nice if everyone had to use the CPL GUI or something like that, but I feel thats still some way off. Too many people rely on dodgy commands/settings/models/sounds etc. it would be chaos if everyone had to use cpl gui, so many "good" players would turn crap instantly :p

If the "pro gamers" want CS to become a "sport" then they should play on as level a playing field as possible, there are some variables, there always will be, but its our job as CS players in a community to judge which are unfair and to stop the use of such unfair things ;)

heh, there wasnt any Admins available today when i come across a Cheater on BW11, so.. i decided to follow this Cheater round (On my Team) (On Assault) running in his way, stabbing him, and blocking his access to doors, it didnt stop him fully, but it made his work a lot harder :)

He eventually got pissed off and started blasting me with his Gun, but i was laughing alll the way home.. :D

You being an admin would be very scary SG, your response to a 'suspected' cheat kinda disgusts me. I have had 'arseholes' constantly knife me and repeatedly calling me a cheat in the past and 'arseholes' is the memory they leave behind. Taking the demos and recording IDs and presenting them to admins when they become available is the only thing you should be doing IMO.

he wasnt suspected, he was a cheater, no Admins where available, and with the name he was using - [CHEATER]HACKER it seemed he wanted to get caught, this is the first time i actually continously knifed someone, but to know it made everyone else on the server happy - and not him, it made my day.

Now, i did get his WonID and stuff like that, but would a person purposly want to get caught? He probably had a stack of WonIDs waiting for when he got banned.
