just getting tired of the tedious and seemingly fotm anti english/british atitude that seems to be so prevalent on these forums.

Should cut them some slack tbh.

It must be hard for them coming from a country no-one's ever heard of.

Sewden or something like that.

Us English have to boast about when we were great to make us feel better because we are such a shower of shit now.

the weather only finished a beaten spanish fleet :/
1. english ships were faster and more manoverable than spanish galleons
2. english ships had more powerfull guns with further range than the spanish
quite a lethal combination hm?

the turning point in the whole battle was after some days of the english fleet harassing the armada from the rear who were unable to engage the english (see points 1+2) the spanish had anchored the armada at night.

the english sent fireships into the armada during the night causing chaos.. and in the confusion the spanish armada cut anchors and they seperated.

in the morning the spanish flagship with a handfull of spanish galleons turned back to engage the organised english fleet and were destroyed 1 by 1 as the armada raced back to help the spanish flagship.

this was the most bloody battle of the whole encouter and is know as "the battle of gravelines"
not a single english ship was lost during this and an estimated 60 english sailors lost their lives.
the spanish armada however lost many ships during this battle with an estimated 4000 casualties and a further 4000 wounded, all from direct ship to ship combat, not weather / shipwreaked / luck or anchored ships related 1 bit.

ofc we all know now what remainded of the retreating "invicible armada" :) as they went up and over the top and britain and many became shipwreaked there and on the coast of ireland.

bottom line is : if spain had faster ships with longer range cannons than the english ships had they could have engaged when they wanted to and won (especially as spain had a far higher number of ships than the english) .. but they didnt and they lost.
1. better english ships (even though outnumbered)
2. smarter tactical thinking from drake
3. arrogance from the commander of the spanish armada who thought he could take on the entire english fleet with just a handfull of spanish galleons supporting him @ gravelines were the main factors that resulted in an english victory, not the weather :/
the weather was just the final nail in the coffin for the armada.

if you genuinly know what happened @ gravelines i find it hard to understand how you can dismiss the thousands of dead spanish sailors who died there as bad luck ie "the weather"

It is obvious we clearly got taught different sides of the story, obvious and normal imo.

The story in spaniard books tells that after the 1st encounter where indeed some spaniard ships were beaten ("On Monday, July 29, the battle off Gravelines: only three spaniard ships sunk"), the weather destroyed the armada in its atempt to reach the "friendly" irish/scotish shore for a recovering an a tactical rethinking.

About this game.

i "beta tested" this for 2 days and was really dissapointed, probably since im older then 10 years old and has played mmorpgs before. it is a game for children. i recomend to download or buy the singleplayer game "sid meyers pirates" instead since its the better original and since "pirates of the burning sea" has stolen most of its material from that game.

this game is a sony game and it doesnt contribute with anything new. you can dress your pirate character in different clothes and have your own ship. its fun for children, but not worth paying money to Sony for. its easy and full of bugs. you do the same things over and over.

im not sure what you find so hard to understand vasco :> im sure its just your national pride thats talking and i can understand that

the armada were destroyed BECAUSE of the damage done to them by the british navy, even if you did have luck with good weather as you ran back to spain im sure many spanish galleons wouldnt have made it anyway as they were so damaged..

think about it.. -.- would the armada have been able to circle britain and return to spain if they had made zero enemy contact.. probably hm?

like i said.. the weather only finished the armada.. the final nail in the coffin.. the straw that broke the donkeys back etc etc

blamming the weather is kinda like a fighter pilot whos been shot down and saying "no my plane wasnt destroyed by the enemy fighter pilot hitting me, my plane was destroyed when it hit the ground" ..

the spanish flagship was reported to have taken over 500 hits from the british navy @ the battle of gravelines, gl getting back to spain in that boat..

and think about the state of the rest of the spanish fleet after the battle of gravelines?
spanish casualties were in the thousands.. (english casualties below 100) no way can ships be sailed on such a journey when so heavily damaged and lacking crew.
naval warfare was so different back then, even tho a ship could take alot of damage and still be afloat the damage that was done inside to crews was just horrific as cannon fire ripped through them, even tho still afloat these vessels were pretty much "dead" unless they could get to a harbour asap.

spain had the option to turn back into the english and fight through them back to spain, but they didnt because they were beaten.

there was zero option of landing @ scotland / ireland.. the commander of the armada even warned against such a thing as everyone knows the scottish and west coast of ireland were barren and dangerous places for ships and had no way to dock the armada.
this was a full retreat of a beaten army -.- no regrouping.. and no recovering for "tactical thinking"
slow ships with poor range led by a commander who was reluctant to engage the enemy were beaten by faster ships with longer range.. nothing more

with hindsight i should have said the battle of trafalger instead as 1 point of british superiority at sea, the naval battle where an outnumbered british royal navy defeated a combined spanish + french fleet (rofl).. as there was no option of running for the spanish/french, ops i meant "recovering for tactical rethinking" ..
how did the british win there? the british commander Nelson knew the french ships were faster so he done what the spanish should have done, they formed two lines and sailed into the spanish/french line.
although Nelson was killed during the battle as his ship the Victory led one of the lines .. the success of the british royal navy over the combined spanish/french fleet was without doubt the most stunning victory in naval warfare.
what version of the battle of trafalger were you taught? :)

theres plenty of other topics on english football, but it pales in comparison to epic naval battles that determined the future of the protestant/catholic world which is the flavour of this thread dontcha think ? :)
had england lost these encounters im pretty sure the world would be a "duller" place having beaten the heretical devil worshipping english protestants that spawned america  and we might not be here discussing history

Exactly the same than you wrote, nothing to say there (I think frenchs may have their own vision tho). There you could get your own vision of spaniard history books honesty. In fact, Trafalgar matches the start of the end of the spaniard sea history (final blow delivered by yankees at Cuba) as told in history lesson at spaniard schools.

You have the vision of english text books, and as sum1 said, history is written by the victorious (agreed). Which doesnt mean its the absolute truth, i grew up believing that any story has 2 sides of the coin. As you might guess, I still believe the spaniard story as much as I guess you believe the english story :)

Anyways, not like I have much national pride, or at least not the same pride than an "old castillian", as my family is kinda of a mix of Euro roots (Italy Spain and Ireland mostly) and i spent much of my childhood in Dublin.
