Personal search engines

Been asked to look into customisabe search engine solutions, the budget isnt up to much so buying a google box isnt really an option. It needs to search and index circa 800 sites and be completely customisable. I looked at 'htdig' as an OS solution, which is almost ideal, but it simply cant handle that number of sites.

Anyone know of any other good ones?

I've used Glimpse for local search-support in the past (it was a while-back now, so I don't know what state it is in). It may be what you're looking for.
