All,

I realise there are dozens of FAQs on the DVLA website about personal plates, but i can't get a direct answer to my question so I figurered someone on here might know.

I see when purchasing a personal plate, there is a £80 transfer fee (usually rolled into the price of the plate you buy) but what happens if you sell your car, buy another and want to take the plate with you?

Do you have to pay £80 to put the old plate back on the car, then another £80 to put the plate on your new car? Or do you pay another £80 to put the old plate on and "de-associate" your own plate?

Anyone know?

£80 takes your personal number onto the new car, and puts original number back on old car.
Just done this, so I'm a knowall :)
Transfer can take a few days, and will require a visit to your local dvla office. Let the dealer sort it out tbh.
When you buy your number you will be sent paperwork, the dealer will then need some of those forms to get the transfer organised.
After a while you will get a new V5 with the new number on it too.
DVLA is without any doubt the cheapest source for plates.

Cheers yuckers,

So basically, my car has the vanilla plate on it at the moment. I buy my new plate and the DVLA send me the forms. Once I register my current car to my new plate, what happens to the old plate?

The issue is this - i'm getting rid of my current car early next year which involves giving the car back to the dealership, but it must be as I bought it (which means the old plate on it). If I buy the plate now (£80), what happens when I give the car back? surely I need to pay something to re-register it with the old reg? How does that work?

The old plate is no longer valid, until needed later (you can forget about it).
When you give your car back the old normal plate goes back on for an £80 transfer fee to DVLA.
You then either transfer your posh number to your new car (inc in the £80 above), or put it on retention (+ £50 a year iirc). On retention means that you own the number but have not put it on a car.
I'm assuming that you will get a new car. That being the case £80 puts your old car back to the way it was, and puts your number on to your new car.

keep the old plates btw, you'll get the old number registered to your car when you move your cherished number to your new car (saves forking out £20 clams)

Ok got it.

Pay £80 now (part of the overall price as i say), stick the new plate on my car and the old one is "safe". Next year, give the car back around August-ish, pay DVLA £80 to put the old plate back on and transfer my new plate to my new car whenever I get it as I may not buy it immediately.

That was the confusing part, because i'm putting back the old plate and putting my new plate on my new car at different times, I thought I would have to pay two lots of £80.

Don't forget to get the letters spaced so that the screwheads change their appearance. I'm sure the cops will love that.

no no,

although "L3 ETG" was available (would have someone change it to read "L3ET G".)

That'd have been good ;).

If you need to fuck around with spacing/screws you are picking the wrong number.

Anyone having 'leet' in their number plate needs a good kicking.

That is all.

Fail the MOT as well.

Number plates dont fail MOT's m8. You could have one 2" x 1" , the tester can do nothing about it, other than to advise you that it is illegal. It's not a test requirement, and so cant fail, on motorbikes anyway :)

hehe, hit a nerve have I? You were actually seriously thinking about it? I'm sure if you did you'd get yourself a nice digi cam and post shots of the number plate on here.

Do you not realise how desperately sad it looks, having a number plate that only CS kiddies are likely to understand? 'OMG ROFFFLES H3 H4S L33T IN HIS NUMB0R PLAT3!!!!!'

Oh, and, you can go fuck yourself you halfwitted CS retard. Have numbers for letters isn't fucking big, and it just shows you to be a fucking wanker. Why dont you speed up natural selection, and go piss in a light socket? Fucko.

Oh dear christ, incase you missed it:

"That'd have been good ;)" <-- wink

I was ripping this piss, but you clearly missed that.

See above, a bit of light hearted humour mocking nerd speak.

Oh, and, you can go fuck yourself you halfwitted CS retard.

Don't play CS, haven't played it in years.

Have numbers for letters isn't fucking big, and it just shows you to be a fucking wanker.

I don't recall thinking/saying it was big. Again, I was taking the piss.

You're so utterly wrong, again with a totally judgemental post clearly showing how truly stupid you really must be. You came into this thread with an axe to grind and you made yourself look like a fucking fool.

Hmm, maybe different on cars? Here's the quote from newreg.com

The law states that, you must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers. Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC). Offences may result in any or all of the following:

A fine of up to £1,000

The registration mark may be WITHDRAWN

The vehicle may FAIL the MOT test

I guess it says it 'may' fail, but not definitely.

Cdr, surely a personal plate should give the owner enjoyment when he/her is driving and a general satisfaction boost on his/her car, whatever someone wants is fine as long as they enjoy it.

You get enjoyment from a personalised number plate? Aren't they just for show?
