Always been tempted by a PDA and then sticking Tom Tom on it

PDA's seem to be on the way out though, that right?

Would you guys/girls still recommend getting one and if so any particular model?

I could just get a Sat Nav system thing on its own but that only serves 1 purpose when i could get a PDA that does Sat Nav and loads of other stuff.

cheers

I use a Palm Tungsten T5, a Bluetooth GPS unit and Michelin MapSonic, it works fine but the software is starting to look dated.

Tom Tom Navigator 5 is, at last, out for the Palm and I may invest in that.

Tom Tom generally do all-in-one solutions, either a GPS dongle with software for a Pocket PC, or a complete independent unit.

I'd be loathe to recommend a Palm at this time, the current range are limited and not very good quality. I've not had experience with Pocket Pcs so I can't comment on them, but a lot of them do have built-in GPS.

My step-son has the Tom Tom One and he's well pleased with it, plus it can be updated because the maps and POIs are on an SD Card.

Tom Tom packages normally come with a GPS which acts as a dongle, check out their MOBILE 5 edition.

I got this

Cheap n cheerful, has a tendency to overheat and crash (you need to unplug/replug to get it working again) but it's the cheapest unit you're likely to find.

Tomtom + your phone will be fine. I've got it on my 6380 and it's marvelous.
Some say it makes you lazy and you should just look at a map. I say "dinosaurs!".

They're right though - I used a map all the time before I got TomTom and became extremely competent at navigating. Then I get TomTom on my nice new SPV and that all goes out the window - when the device cuts out (which it does a few times a week) I just panic, have to pull over and wait for it to start working again.

That said, you're right Kenny - dinosaurs!

Can you download newer maps anywhere?

Anyone know what the latest version of the GB map is?

Fanks

I got a Globalsat BT-338 as you suggested Tom, in silver, seems great, good signal strength.

I used tomtom yesterday for the first time going to a hospital in stevenage and even though i sort of knew the way it was good.

Very pleased so far

Can i check my version of tom tom somehow?

Ah dunno, I just searched for the seller I bought it from. Would probably be easier just to buy the same one from someone else :)

You can check the software version if you scroll through the preference menus.

Software version is independant of map version.

Tom where do the maps go on the Nokia 6680 memory card? Is there a specific folder for them?

Thanks

Yep, all the map stuff just goes into the root of the memory card.

You need a 'zip' folder for the 7-digit postcode search.
