Please will you take a look at my site?
The address is pause.tk
It features articles by myself and other great writers.
It offers an alternative look at gaming, and I would be thrilled if you could tell me what you think about it.
I made and run it myself.
Thanks
Matt

we get quite a lot of these "plz look at my site" thingies. Most are advertisements for some crap or other. Hence the hostile reaction.

It's nothing personal :)

I looked at the site anyway.

The contents bar with Start, Select etc looks rubbish. The title art thingy looks about 15 years out of date and the font on the articles page is horrible. Sorry. :(

tip: If you are going to use the phrase "literary prowess" - then please clear up the grammatical and spelling errors in the text first.

Your popups suck major donkey phallus too.

The design is pretty awful, too much white space, the gfx are just the wrong side of "abysmal".

Have you considered using something like phpnuke/postnuke? OK it makes all the sites look the same - but frankly, it'd be a lot better than what you have at the moment.

And if you have a tagline of "an alternative view to gaming" you may want to consider the content of the only article on the site. As it's about as alternative as listening to Radio 1 whilst reading the Daily Mail and drinking Horlicks.

Trying to be constructive here, but I can't, so basically:

If I clicked a link that brought me to that site, I'd be clicking 'back' or 'close' pretty quickly.

Nah - I'm friendly :)

Anyway - the site was too annoying for me because of the squillions of debug error messages I got. I'm using IE 5.5 on NT4 if that helps.

The website could do with some work. Buttons need to say exactly what they are (rather than requiring roll over). The layout of the site should be more structured imo, and the design should show this. It's ok to have a lot of space if it looks like it is intended.
I think you should have a little functionality on the main page, some relevant news. And most recent 5 articles or something. Name the pages so the history doesn't show "untitled document".
There are a lot of things which you might not consciously register but which do change the look of the page. Maybe there are some design websites which can help you here (I don't know).

The articles are quite good. As a PC gamer I don't think I would visit this site, but the console users probably would. Especially if you add content, news etc.

Last little bit of advice; don't spam

I've had some positive response, some negative, and some attempts at 'burns'

I'd consider this a good topic.

Maybe I should sell out and go for bling-bling graphics like most other sites?

And the titl;e i meant to look 15 years out of date. 'Retro' is the term i use.

There's "retro" and there's "abysmal"

There's no excuse for that logo though.

Here's one that took me all of 30 seconds:

http://www.paroxysm.co.uk/images/lesshite.jpg

Just a few changes and suddenly it's "acceptable".

Mine wasn't an "attempt" to flame, it WAS a flame, your site is shit, fix it.

I'm sorry, but i would much rather have my 'abysmal' one than your 'acceptable' one.

Mine may be simple, but yours is just damn plain

I would be offended, but from looking at your site you have the artistic capabilities of a SARS riddled hedgehog, I actually take it as a compliment.

You've never heard of the design philosophy "less is more"?

Thought not.

:)

I have to agree, the "retro" look is basically crap. I know its meant to fit in with the idea of it being a games site but it really doesnt work. It looks like something created in 10 minutes.

Maybe I should sell out and go for bling-bling graphics like most other sites?

Is that selling out? If it looks good then follow the trend. Or if you're going to try and be unique, make it good. :)

if less is more, think about how much more more would be.

And less? You just removed a few dots and the 'press start' thing.

Anyway, i'll accept that you and I have differing opinions on the subject of my logo.

The site, however, isn't about graphics - it's about articles.

but i better you didn't even bother to look at the site after the logo, did you?

I mean this in a nice way, but the first thing you should do is move your website off Geocities and onto some proper hosting. Second thing to do is to neaten it up a bit. You may like it, but it doesn't look that nice. Its OK when its all shrunk down on a high resolution screen, but the 800x600 (I think thats my work resolution) it looks pretty poor.

Someone mentioned Postnuke. I've set up a few webisites using it, and it is an easy way to turn a basic coding knowledge into a professional (though rather standard) website.
