Was just wondering where your online nick came from. Mine used to be TremorChrist which is a Pearl Jam song.

I know what ECA and TDC stands for and I know where babs and throd got their names from. I don't know where Cals is from or Wij.

So, where did you get your online names from?

FS, can't edit the thread title due to typo. I fucking hate this laptop at work. :(

Hi, I'm Will.

My original online nick was ItchyTrigaFinga, which is a partial lift from Human Traffic. I shortened it to Itchy, and then got fucked off with the whole nick thing and just became Will.

Tilda was the name of my sisters first daoc charachter, which I later stole off her because I enjoyed playing it. People got to know me by that nick so I kept it.
Like Calaen, I think it makes me sound masculine ;)

PLightstar was orginally Prince Lightstar from the Skeleton Warriors Cartoon but because Prince Lightstar was taken on Hotmail I shortened it to PLightstar and it stuck.

DaGaffer because the BW lads said I had to start using the forums when we bought it and I couldn't think of anything else. 'Hookey' (my BF2 nick) because years ago I was playing in a BF1942 clan, and I was hiding (I think I was on the phone), and one of the lads quoted Zulu - "you're a malingerer private Hook", and I liked it so it stuck.

Mine was awarded to me when I was the Parts Monkey in a Halfords Garage, some 10 years ago now. It's apparently from the character in id, rather than the delicious stew. I was offered a choice, which is better than some of the new starters had. I prefered Gumbo to Clingfilm, and have used it since.

Like Will, I am however increasingly using John. It's kind of embarrassing giving out gumbo as part of an email address to clients and non geeky friends.

Mine is from Farscape the ex-best sci-fi on telly, only surpassed by Firefly.

The other one I use more for 'toons in MOG's is Toyan, which is my Star Wars name.

Heh, yes it is Gumbo - I've now gone to first name on msn (which for some reason only has 'real life' contacts).

Callous comes from my old Headmaster's description of me as he was suspending me. "No respect, doesn't care about anyone, a callous sense of disregard for other people" is something like how it went if I recall. I don't know why, it sort of stuck.

Of course, back then I had no idea about the alternative spelling/meaning (callus = an area of hard thickened skin, especially on the feet or hands).

I dropped the capital L's about 18 months ago (everywhere apart from here, for some reason - I think I tried and then didn't follow it up by pm'ing whoever I needed to to get it changed) because I thought they were a bit crap.

I often think about a nick-change and I'm constantly playing with new personas on irc, but I don't know what I'd go to and I can't be arsed to put that much thought into it tbh

Well

I used to be called, back in the days when Q2 was played online, Wacker.
I thought this was a jolly interesting and original name, and so I was happy.
Until one day I discovered a (now long dead ) website called -rather rediculously- the Champions League for Quake.
So, I entered my name and discovered ,what ? You guessed it, about 14 other people with just the same name.
In order to combat this, as my ego will not allow anything else, I picked a name from a book that no one else I had ever spoke to had read.
But I didnt just stop there, oh no, I picked the smallest character I could find in said book. The book was Gormanghast by Mervyn Peake , and throdgrain is one of the young Titus Groan's teachers. Throdgrain is such a small character I dont even think he ever even says anything, you just kind of see him walking past :) Indeed later the BBC had the temerity to make a small TV programe out of it, but thankfully it was so small my name didnt even get mentioned.
As far as I know, no one else has ever used, or indeed wanted to use this name. If you google throdgrain all you get is loads of things about me, which I suppose is a bit scary what with the internet etc, but I dont care really.
My drunk playing CSS name is Winchester 101 by the way :)

Waaay back when all this were fields, I dialled my first bulletin board on my little A600. Looking around my desk for some inspiration for a name to sign up with I picked up a Nirvana CD, the record label was Geffen, seemed like a decent name so just went with it. Later shortened to Gef, as thats what everyone seemed to call me!

SAAB?? I'm missing more than that methinks...

EDIT: oh yes, Space Above and Beyond?? Wasn't that around the same time as Sliders? And Sliders was allowed to run on and Space was cancelled??

I was about 14 and sitting in a secondary school English lesson. We had to produce a short drama or somesuch. One of the characters was named "Barry Shovel" and I later stole this for my first registration on the super-old-school Barrysworld Webboard. Used it when playing Quake 2 as well.

At some point I grew to dislike being called "Barry" and I felt a bit guilty for just having stolen the name. Somewhere in the transition from Webboard to the first Barrysworld UBB I dropped the Barry and Shovel has stuck ever since.

Mind you, Freddys is the only place I still use the alias (apart from Last.FM, which doesn't let you change username). These days I tend to register for new things with BenWard (since "Ben" is never, ever available).

I used to whistle the Jingle Bells tune at school, and all my fantasy football teams have it as its name, usually in the form of JingleBells United or JingleBells XI, I just continued it when playing Americas Army/CS/BF2 Demo and on IRC.

When I first got onto the internet, I was lacking imagination. I looked around and saw Microsoft Encarta. So I called myself encarta_no1 because I thought I knew everything. This was the worst name ever but it was only ever used on MSN Gaming Zone and I didn't really care.

People thought I was funny. Funny humourous and funny in the head. I wanted to be Jester, Joker, but landed on Clown. Clown/Clowneh/[Clowneh]/Clwonar too many random variations to remember.

In real life, my friends call me Ching. They thought I was Chinese back in the day. Racist *****. The name stuck.

Mine comes from the "Reality Dysfunction" books by Peter F Hamilton....I enjoyed the series a great deal....and was a loss for what to call myself when I joined Barrysworld....and that name sprung to mind.

Alternatively it has something to do with my lack of sex0r skillz....

erm

Started out as loonytune in quakeworld cos I couldn't think of a good name. Luckily I moved house and couldn't afford to keep playing so the name never stuck

When i got broadband I used to play against a mate called rattlesnake from UDFC back in the days of quake3 and changed my nick from another (utterly original name sLaVe to mongoose) to wind him up. For some reason mongoose stuck and I've been playing as mongoose/fiend ever since.

I have different nicks for mmos as I don't feel Fiend/Mongoose fit beardy games. so in beardy games I go by isquish or recently Dupa. I chose Dupa cos it's polish for arse and makes me chuckle

Fairly obvious mine came from Red Dwarf, as I had previously met the actor Robert Llewellyn about 3 days before my first foray into proper online gaming back in 1996. For the past year I've not been playing so much but when I do, I use the alias Synaesthesia, both because of the first time I saw the word in the title of a fantastic dance track by the Thrillseekers (featured in the film 51st State in the club if you're not a dancehead) and because of the meaning from the Greek (syn-) “union,” and (aesthesis) “sensation,”

That last bit almost made me sound intelligent.

When I was 9 or 10, some guy I knew started calling me this. It has been my general purpose nickname since. True story.

Nowadays I more often go by 'misnomer' though, as that's such a fucking cool thing to have as a name. It blows my mind!!

Used to be Tom[shotteh] because I was in clan SHOTTEH where me and Bungle would run around using only a pump shottie in CS.

The Tom part is pretty obvious :)

Everyone assumes I got Dukat from startreck :( god how I hate star treck!

I actually got the name Dukat from the first Babylon 5 film. I was stuck for names when I first started DAoC and so I put this one in and it stuck :)

I later found out that the actual spelling of the character in B5 is something like "Dukhat" or something, however i didnt know that at the time and even if I did, the spelling looks too much like "duck-hat" for my liking :(

My usual CS name, PikeyReaXion is lifted from the film Snatch, the line towards the end of the film: "Every action has an equal and opposite Reaction, and a pikey reaction, is quite a f'ing thing".

I shortened it a little to make it look a bit more unique by putting the 'X' in :)

My scout's name, Kalloth, is completely original. I sat there for a while after using 'dukat' to try to think of a better name, its not from the name generator as some people suspect but just a made up one. I've actually recently found out that people in WoW have the same name, and after further research it seems that some U-boat commander had it as his nickname too.
