So finally got my optical fibre after months of waiting and i'm rather happy with it :) just waiting for isp's to start selling higher speeds now! whats the fastest the south of the UK have atm? I assume it'll be much faster down there than up north where I am.

Download Speed: 34919 kbps (4364.9 KB/sec) Upload Speed: 1701 kbps (212.6 KB/sec)

(speed test done via Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed) download is normally 4700kb/s but wife is downloading :( /shakes fist

What I get at the moment from TalkTalk / the upload would be about 600-700 kb/s if I was with BT they cap upload at 8mb/s - TalkTalk cap upload at 2mb/s.

Apparently Virgin do 50Mb broadband where I am. May have to look into that. I have appallingly slow broadband. Fibre optic sounds very tempting

I know someone in the South East who recently got BT Infinity and his speeds are;

Down 38.07 mb/s
Up 8.06 mb/s

so not much different to yours

I cant get this yet :(

The services we have provisioned on this seem to cap out at about 35mb and some are as low as 20 because the copper wiring is crap.

I wonder if contention will end up gimping this like BT's ADSL service in my area there are so many home hubs BT was dog slow during peak hours.

BT Infinity will be in my exchange in 2012, but my BB is pretty decent; connected at 8 megabits and generally get a nice stable 800kb per second down. Not bad for £7.50 a month.

Don't be obtuse.

Eight hundred kilobytes per second.

It's above average for the UK, never mind Scotland. I understand that Sky are trialling a fiber service just now with members of staff.

If I just accepted what BT say my line should support, I'd be on 3.2-3.5Mbps.
I've worked with my ISP and tweaked my modem and got that up to a more usable 5.2Mbps but that's about the limit.

There are no plans at all to fibre my exchange, so I might just about be catching up with you all in the 22nd century.

I use that and you really do get 50Mb so I can recommend their internet. Virgin TV and phone pricing is shit though.

BT Infinity has severe issues with VPNs and such for those that work at home or remotely connect to the office. Expect to have to hack your registry to fix things like MTU size.

i'd have gone with BT or Virgin but I heard from friends that use them that they throttle you like hell + when new games come out Virgin sucks most of the time/get massive lag issues until they sort it.

TalkTalk on the other hand havent throttled me once in nearly 2 years from my adsl right upto optical fibre i've had max speed all the time (and I am a heavy downloader) i've downloaded probably 600-700gig in the last week alone and still havent been throttled (most of that done during peak hours aswell)

I have virgin 50MB and they don't throttle you at all with it, pretty much downloading at 5mb/s at all times - however recently bought "The Orange Box" from steam and their download servers are awful :(

peak download was 3.6mb/s ! SLOW!

although if you want fast download speeds - lets all move to sweden! pretty sure Septina has 100mb inet :(

I'm on Virgin 50mb, no complaints, it's consistently fast and no throttle.

I was on BT for a few years, and noticed every few months they would get really bad packetloss in games (regardless of what game I play) so figured it was eventually time to ditch them.

I'm considering dropping down a lower speed as I rarely use the internet any more for anything other than surfing and gaming, and steaming porn is really fast nowadays anyway ;)

Problem is their broadband pricing is equally as shit if you don't take the bundle.

best part is to get yourself with a company that does discount :p

My work gives me 50mb broadband - the XL phone package (free calls to landlines at all times)

and the XL tv package (all the channels bar sky sports/movies) (package includes ESPN and the HD channels)

with a free 2nd box for multiroom and a v+ box for main room

all for a snazzy £33.50 per month :)

I think I'd rather stick with my 20mb O2 broadband for less than £6 than change my day job :p

You do prove my point though because standard 50mb from virgin is £35 a month, so you're getting the whole lot for less than they punt the standalone broadband for.

Yes indeed, my point was find a discount code and use it :p

I noticed though for my to upgrade to 100mb it would end up being like double the cost of my package - which wasn't really a good deal imo!

They made some changes to my local exchange / link a few weeks ago to improve upload speeds. All I had to do was reboot the router and bam! faster uploads. Of course that test was off-peak. Upload during peak times are much slower.

Problem is their broadband pricing is equally as shit if you don't take the bundle.

Yes, that is the problem. I ended up with a bundle for just that reason.
